That's when The LEGO Movie 2 will hit the screens, according to Variety.

The news comes as Warner Brothers revealed that the first movie has grossed over £200 million worldwide and is tipped to rake in another $30 million over this weekend, making it the highest grossing film three weeks in a row, and the highest grossing of the year, according to Wikipedia.

Not bad for a movie that many, including me, thought would flop...

Nice earnings and it hasn't even opened here yet...

Shame on Huw, shame!

I can't wait that long! Why couldn't it be May 25th? (:

By in United States,

I hope LEGO realizes they're onto something now. Next sequel, add in some more LOTR, introduce more Ninjago, maybe add Chima and Friends, make some kind of a storyline and boom, they're got another smashing hit. The LEGO Movie 3, add whatever's out in 2020, plus maybe some nostalgia (Powerminers, Atlantis?) and once again LEGO's breaking the bank.

As long as they keep the main characters mini figure size it should be good. I personally don't want to see any duplo friends/Disney size characters in any future movie sets I'd have to maybe collect.

Everything is AWESOME, indeed!

I told huw about this.

By in United States,

It's all about the Benjamins...

They should stop at the first movie, sequals are "usually" a let down and for money purposes only since they're riding on the coattails of the first. There are some exceptions to the rule, but most stink.

By in United Kingdom,

I am surprised it will take 3 years to get the next movie ready.
With such a massive hit 12 months should have been possible.

Or maybe Lego are going to tie the movie to a particular new product line which is being produced in 2017?

I'm a bit surprised they don't do a Friends spinoff Movie........

By in Canada,

Does anyone know when the first movie will be out on dvd?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^I would think June/July. Movies usually take 4-5 months to go on DVD, sometimes shorter (Oz great and powerful took only 3 months to do so, and the soon-to-be billion dollar Frozen a few days earlier than 4 months.)

Unfortunately I`m with KBsig106. Hollywood has become so uncreative (nothing but remakes) and when an original idea does come out and does well, all they do is release sequels rehashing what was done in the original...knowing they`ll make millions in everyone going to sequel hoping its just as good. So 2019/20 will see the release of the third movie in the trilogy split into two parts.

just leave it alone don`t tarnish this movie

I'm with shaase and kbsig106, a sequel to the Lego movie just takes away the uniqueness of the original movie, making it less special and will most likely not be as good, as sequels usually are.

By in United Kingdom,

I for one can't imagine how a movie could follow on, especially with the ending. (I hope that's not a spoiler! Shame on whoever it was who blew it for me on a news comments thread last week! :P)
Saying that, a sequel may simply be another Lego based movie, with no other particular connection. And for any UK members, the BBC's Line of Duty had a pretty good relaunch recently, with a few of the characters from the first series, but a completely different environment and focus. It can be done!

Oh ye of little faith :)

Ok I admit it, I never quite expected this reaction.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmm, but still no release date for the Ninjago film.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm surprised that it would take them so long.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Only one sequel ? Harry Potter tells the story... :)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Still waiting to see it. The movie opens in Aust/NZ in April, coinciding with school holidays or I suppose there's illegal downloads.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

They should include various themes as @lego613master said, the next movie needs variety.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, this was expected - a bit surprised though the release date is three years away, was expecting more along the lines of 1/2 years,

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmmmm the almost end ruined this film for me, hope to like it more once it's added to the blu ray collection
Preordered it and it's says 31st dec!! What's all that about!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I know it ended in 2010 but id really like a bionicle movie which would tell he whole story in the style of the lego movie. It would so cool but may be too dark for some children unfortunately

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I preordered the Blu-ray at Amazon US but no indication of release date yet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

we aw dewpwo and we are here to destowy you!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I agree with some that they should just leave it at the first movie. It's real tough to have a sequel that can outshine the first, but films like Despicable Me 2 really showed everyone how it's done.

By in United States,

Buckbrick is right

Gravatar
By in United States,

As we were discussing on EuroBricks, the world map that Lord Business was showing to his minions also includes (in chronological order) Dino Island, Pharaoh's Quest, Atlantis, Middle Zealand, Viking's Landing, Pirate's Cove, (perhaps an unnamed Ninja territory in the south?), and Cape Space... That is at least eight unexplored realms, and more than enough fodder for two excellent sequels!

http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=83699&st=550entry1832646

I'll bet that the second one will focus on Classic Castle and Middle Zealand with a Lord of the Rings tie-in, and the third one will focus on Classic Space with a Star Wars tie-in, much in the same way that this first one focused on City with a DC Superheroes tie-in... It makes sense, since City, Castle, and Space were the three major themes of the '80s, and LOTR and SW both spawned multiple movie trilogies.

By in United States,

Oh Huw of little faith, why did you doubt? :D Just kidding - I honestly expected a two hour Lego commercial but got a really good animated movie with a legitimate storyline. Unfortunately my friend saw it and she didn't like it (which means she isn't going to join a TFOL group sometime), but only because "it wasn't her thing".

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll admit - I'm worried by that news. The first movie was great, but the part that made it great can't be recreated again. Other great things can be done no doubt, but to me right now, it'll seem forced.

But then again, many of us were wrong about this movie too. I thought it was going to be horrible and had already written it off. I've been to the LEGOLAND discovery center movies and none of them are particularly impressive which led me to little hope for this movie... that is until the positive reviews started pouring in for it. Then I watched it, felt ashamed, but overall enjoyed the movie =)

I guess only time will tell how it goes. I just hope Warner Brothers doesn't shoot themselves in the foot with the sequel and tarnish the brand.

By in Singapore,

i don't know how u guys could judge a movie before u've even seen it, and call it a flop. I went in with an open mind, and i knew it was gonna be a kids' movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids just loved it and wanted to watch it again. After that, they just wanna collect the mini-figs. I had to let go of my bad-cop to another family's sobbing kid as it was sold out on that day.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The key to the movie being great was the writing and directing. That is what was lacking from some of the other Lego produced endeavors. When I found out who was doing the writing and directing I was optimistic it would be a pretty decent movie. After actually watching it on the first day of release it I knew it would be a big hit.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ok, OK - I'll give in and would be first in line for:

Lego Movie 2: Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!!!
Staring Benny and anything classic space

or

Lego Move 2: The Forest of Obsolete Products
Staring the vintage Lego minifigs with no arms...

;-)

Sicne they're legal Lego characters, Only how their roles fit in this story would matter. It shouldn't be personal tastes to decide which themes shouldn't be in. Also, they can also be made into minifig scales if plot writers like.

And it was indeed a dissapointent that many popular themes (both licensed and nonlicnsed) didn't get to the first TLM. If TLM2 is coming, the plot writers should try make up for them.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

that's why it's called, the lego movie, a very vague title to give the scriptwriters the flexibility to create an entirely new story with new characters for the sequel. we might see Emmet again, or maybe not.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The date shows they are doing it right, probably getting the original creative team on board which are probably tied up with other projects in the meantime.

Lego 2: Chima vs The Lone Ranger

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

@kbsig106: I vote for "TLM2: The Duplos in FabuLAND Rising" :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

While three years is a long wait at least this mean they will take their time and hopefully get it right (again), the first one took long enough but look at the result. I have heard some great ideas for a sequel around Finn starting to go into his dark ages and the lego world being under threat again as a result.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it was going to release in a year or two Id be more worried. 3 at least means theyre dedicated to spending some time on it to make it good.

I think the ending leaves TONS of room for sequel(s).

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

> around Finn starting to go into his dark ages
Or maybe not. If plotwriters want to make the next story more flexible, maybe it would begin with Finn's other family member or friends who play Lego in a different way, then Finn appears in the latter of the story. And not sure if TLM2 would consider not to force new audience review previous plot.

By in Ireland,

speaking of Despicable Me 2 I wonder if anyone else realized that the bad guy "El Macho" is also a minifig in the Lego Movie, the El Macho wrestler that comes with Lord Business's evil lair. Is it a coincidence or does it suggest something ? could Lego possibly start making Despicable Me sets with the release of the upcoming Minions movie ?? who knows ??

Gravatar
By in United States,

I expect that they will handle it well. The movie ended on a good note, and I don't want it to be ruined. When they are making this one, I hope they include more themes and have a completely new story and characters, with maybe Emmet & company only making a small cameo.

Honestly, I'd rather see a Ninjago film first. It's great to see LEGO expanding into other media more, and using the tools they have to attract more fans to the hobby. Don't disappoint me!
