Introducing the RebrickMat
Posted by Huw,
Where do you build -- on the floor or on a table? If the latter, you'll appreciate that a hard table top does not make the best building surface: round parts have a tendency to roll around on it, pieces can get scratched on it, and small bits can be difficult to pick up from it.
A table cloth is an obvious solution, and I have been using a sheet of wool felt on mine, but that is expensive, surprisingly difficult to get hold of, and pills over time.
So, when Nathan over at Rebrickable showed me a building mat he was developing when I visited him in Australia earlier in the year, I was keen to try it out.
Not only does the RebrickMat provide a perfect surface for building on, it also has a wealth of useful information printed on it. Furthermore, for a limited time, Brickset readers can buy it at a reduced price.
I guess it's best described as an oversized mouse mat. It's 90cm x 40cm (35" x 16") in size and made from a thick, slightly squashy material that's woven along the edges, so it appears to be very robust and hard-wearing.
The useful information begins with a swatch along the top edge that shows most, if not all, of the current colour palette. They do not match brick colours exactly, but they are close and will aid identification. Printing them spot-on is something that even LEGO struggles with in its instructions, so this is understandable.
There are various markings for measurement along the other edges, printed at 1:1, making it suitable for determining the dimensions of your structures. The chain and caterpillar links on the right-hand edge will be particularly useful for Technic builders.
The remainder of it is covered with information about Technic gear ratios, design numbers for common parts, diagrams showing basic SNOT configurations, and so on: all useful facts and figures to have at your fingertips.
It's now replaced the rather tatty piece of green felt I had on my building table, and I am sure it will prove to be practical, useful, and informative while constructing sets to review and building MOCs.
It's available from Rebrickable priced at $40 with $5 shipping to most countries. However, from today until the 15th June, Brickset readers will receive a 10% discount when using the code BRICKSET10 at checkout or by following this link.
Thanks to Nathan for sending the mat for this article. All opinions expressed are my own. Brickset may receive a small commission on sales made via our links.

Looks very useful! Maybe I will order one.
0/10 colour chart doesnnt include very light bluish grey.
jk, this looks awesome
Just had mine delivered the other day and all I can say is WOW! Absolutely the right size to build on and the included "tools" printed on the mat are just a great detail, especially since I don't have every brick piece ID number memorized, don't worry I am working on practicing to memorize every Lego piece by name and number, just going to take time, Lol.
So yeah with that being said it is a real pleasure to build on and when I am trying to figure out dimensions and brick height, its all there for without having to stop my flow to check. So yeah I am kinda rambling and all I can say is definitely consider picking up one or two of these mats.
Lovely, I pinch/borrow a nice clean tea towel to build on, much to my wife's annoyance. Not anymore, just ordered.
I just use an actual oversized mouse pad, lol.
I like it, but I wonder if it would not get obsolete as soon as new colors were introduced in the LEGO palette.

I build on the floor. On a fluffy carpet.
The IKEA shoe/boot tray is absolutely ideal for building. Big enough and has a lip to stop pieces falling off. Only a couple of quid too...
:-)))
For those that like light kits, Light My Bricks have a similar version of this type of building mat. It’s great and I use it for doing all my builds on. And I think it’s about half the price of this one, though it’s a simple design and doesn’t have the various measurement guides on it.
Thanks for presenting this item. It could be a useful thing.
I would prefer a reduced printed content with rulers only, perhaps the colour table.
However, I have been using a serving tray (40 x 60 cm²) for some time:
- good size that will fit on most tables and desks
- can be put away without removing any parts on it using one hand (left or right) only
- can also be used to serve meals or drinks
- cost was approx the same as for the RebrickMat
- single disadvanted: these tray are typically available in dark colours or unattractive gray .
I build on foam board, which tends to breakdown after a few reuses. I like this, as with computer keyboard mousepads, it should be easy to clean and durable. The Technic axle sizes printed on the mat are what pushed me over into ordering one.
I'll let the internets know how it works out.
Interesting, but not worth $40 to me.
What's wrong with Pythagoras in lego...
Surprised not to see a news post here about the Pharrell movie by now.
Dagnabbit! I hate it when my tablecloth pills up!
(Either that's British slang, or he misspelled "peels")
Regardless, this mat looks amazing! I love how there's reference guides for everything, including angles! Might wanna pick one up someday, because this would be the perfect MOC-building tool!
It's like a DM screen for building MOCs!
I’m currently using a green gridded hobby mat, like those used for cutting bits of plastic without damaging what’s underneath.
This looks a lot more useful, especially with the measurements and everything on there, and the colors! Maybe now I won’t have to ask my wife or children to identify weird colored parts. I can just use the chart.
I use a Heavy Duty self healing cutting mat, as used by my wife in her sewing room. I got mine on Amazon. What makes them ideal is that they are designed for cutting on, so Lego makes very little impact on it. And, they come in several sizes to suit your table. I got an A2 size and it only cost me thirteen pounds. Hope this helps someone.

Nope, Huw means ‘pills’, as in ‘bobbles’ - when fabric wears and generates little fuzzy bumps on the surface.
Thanks
I have ordered
Hardcore builders sit in the grass and build lol
I love this idea and I might need to order one.
Not sure if I'll get this, but it definitely looks interesting.

Yeah, I just saw the trailer, which played before another video I was watching. I usually skip trailers, but there was no way I was going to skip something like that. Not sure if I'll see it or not, but it's nice to see them still making Lego movies.
Literally just said you could use a tablecloth. Just use one, or buy one. They're like being clearanced like everywhere for practically nothing. This is just spending money to spend money. (insert affiliate link here)

I use a fiskars self healing cutting mat.
But really any flat surface will do.
For over a decade my son and I just built on the dining table. Never an issue.

If a piece of clothing or material pills, it develops small balls of threads on its surface.
Order confirmed! Thank you for sharing this useful mat, useful for sure, the review, and the discount. It had been a while I had been searching for the ideal surface on which to build my sets and MOCs. I actually use our living room glass top table, but it will be even more cool with this. I also sometimes use a model kit mat, but it's a little too soft to me.

Perhaps, but there's a clear precedent of many news or special-interest posts on this site which don't relate directly to sets, and a new weird LEGO movie (which will be receiving sets) is a big intriguing LEGO news topic that feels oddly absent on this site right now.

I started building 8734 in my car once, and I think I've done so with other Bionicle sets. Does that count?
I don't mean to be rude, but it does seem like a hugely overpriced solution to a problem you never knew you had... Sorry.
I built on a thin cork desk mat from Ikea and works great for me.

I tried that when I left my Dark Ages ten years ago. But I discovered that I am too old for that!
;-)
PS: Once I built on a hotel bed.
Been using mine for a few weeks, it's a really fantastic product.

Nothing! The numbers shown are the length of the bricks. The distance between the holes is always minus 1. So 3^2+4^2=5^2.
I normally build on my wood kitchen table & use an IKEA small bamboo tray to hold my parts out of the packet to avoid any small pieces rolling. I like the idea of this mat as it will add some extra friction when building, ordered one to give it a try. Thanks for the heads up & discount.
I use a carpet or a bed, depending whether I'm watching something on TV with others or laptop on my own.
It can get difficult with art, as when you use the tools to remove the dots, they can fly anywhere!
I did see a tray that looked useful awhile back that I asked my father if he could make, but he's renovating my third dolls house, so it might be awhile.
This is sick. For 41$? SOLD
Seems like a really neat product. I don't know if I want to spend the money on it. I may continue to deal with the current set up, but the rougher material may help with the rolling away of those silly little pieces.

In practice, the triangle is formed at the centers of the studs, but bricks and beams are measured in whole studs.
Chuck Norris builds in mid-air.
Using roundhouse kicks.
Order confirmed! Really useful for someone who is colour blind like myself when building I can compare the pieces to the colour chart and make sure they are correct. Hopefully will mean less rebuilds when I get to a page an realise the light green part I used was the wrong one and the darker green one was used on page 3....

I expect they'll keep updating it to accommodate that.
I think this is a very clever idea and they did a nice job designing the graphics. Double thumbs up.
Already bought mine
I already have mine! I must have ordered it as soon as it was released, and it took a while to get here, but I can confirm that it's indeed very well made and looks great. I may have to pick up a second just to use as a large mouse pad for my gaming computer. :)
@Adrianucho said:

I have one and actually its not all colors. I think the colors he chose to include are those that have been retired and have a replacement. I also have the Lego Periodic table and compared the mat to it and I think having those similar and retired colors really help.
I bought this just a few minutes after receiving the initial midnight release email that Rebrickable sent out. It did take a couple weeks to reach me, which was no big deal, and was selling at an "introductory price" of $30. After unrolling it the first time I was more than satisfied with the quality of the mat and immediately went back to order a second for my Dad. Unfortunately at that point the price went up to $40 + Shipping, and while I really do love it, I hesitated and ultimately bailed on the second purchase at that price point (and gifted him mine since he was so in love with it).
The 10% off coupon is nice but I'll hold out for a sale at point point which brings it back to the $30 launch price which I personally feel is the appropriate one for this item.
I use a TV dinner tray. It's portable, keeps pieces from rolling away, and is easy to pour the leftovers into a bag from a corner. But a soft surface would be nice to avoid scratching, as you point out. Honestly, though, I'd consider this just for the geeky nature of it. Am I really ever going to need to know the part numbers for the various plate sizes? No... but all the same, I want it!
I just ordered one.
Where is this shipping from for orders to EU/Belgium? Outside of EU, meaning there will be customs duties?
I just use a tray. Kinda tempted though. I like those snot diagrams.

I also use a serving tray. I don’t recall exactly how much it was but I got it at TK Maxx for, I believe, a fraction of the price of the RebrickMat.
In addition, I’ve repurposed a couple of round food containers. They are in two sizes that are perfect for large and small LEGO bags respectively. They were originally packaging for pre-made omelettes by a brand called ‘unearthed’.

I do and love it, when the sun is out too ;)
Very cool idea. I’ve used a couple different raised side items as build surfaces. Ordered one to try out.
That is an incredible mat.
…I don’t normally say that about a mat.
Just ordered mine. Never thought I needed a dedicated building mat but right as I saw the pictures I knew it would be a hundred times better than doing so over a random pillow sheet or towel as I currently do so pieces won't go missing or get dust on them. Fantastic idea.
Would be nice as a poster or such, but for a real building mat I'd prefer a cleaner look. Reminds me a bit of promotional photos for scale modeling where the always add tools and blueprints to make it look cool.
That's a nice product with some interesting features.
I prefer a nice hardwood surface preferably tiger oak or burled walnut.

Mais oui.
Amazing timing on this review! I just received mine yesterday. Ordered it on May 19th.
I immediately made the purchase mainly as it's a great way to support Rebrickable. The introductory price was $30 + $5 for shipping to the USA (no duty charges), but I wouldn't hesitate to pony up $40 to help boost an essential website like Rebrickable. I look forward to having such useful brick info right at hand while building too!
I have a couple of cafeteria trays that I've used for years when building. The edge keeps the parts from rolling away plus it's easy to move if the coffee table, kitchen table, couch etc.... is needed for its intended purpose. :) I'm liking the idea of a build mat with the handy reference info on it though!
I got this one: https://moc.industries/mat Seems helpful.
Who else read paragraph four and immediately went to Rebrickable’s merch?
Thanks Brickset! I had seen another review of this and was already interested. I guess $4 off is good enough for me!

Even Chuck Norris feels pain when stepping on a Lego piece. The piece feels pain as well, though.
Try couple mellisa & Doug puzzle boards.
Assembled Dimensions: 11.7 Inches (W)
Assembled Length: 15.7 Inches
think size puzzle not board.
I really like mat though
All of you young whippersnappers that build on the floor or a bed, enjoy it now as you get old the ole bones won't bend like they used to.

It would take a long time or a new bout of radical changes like what happened to greys, brown, pink and purples for the mat to just need replacement on colors. It has Dark Orange and except for old Purple the color bar is surprisingly accurate. Gears are more likely to be replaced, but then it's still a good guide for the older parts.
It seems that the central rectangle doesn't fix with 32x32 stud baseplate? I think is a mistake that doesn't fit with two of them...

Spot on. No one needs this.
I build on a flat table. If a piece roll's off the table, you pick it up. And the ridiculous sentence in the first paragraph, 'hard table top does not make the best building surface.'
Wha? I've been building this way when I was a kid (kitchen table) and then as adult coming out of the dark ages from like '06 or so til now. Flat hard table. Never an issue. Never. My son built this way too.
It's ok to have this mat, but totally unnecessary.
If the company is based in Australia, why are the prices in US Dollars and not AUD??
I'm interested. Where does it ship from?
There are people who build on soft surfaces???
It's hard for me to imagine that; I need the hard surface to align small pieces correctly!
Nice graphics and useful information; maybe if it was available as a poster...
I also wonder how well it would work as a mouse pad.
The build area looks quite small, if you wanted or needed to refer to all the information printed on it. I have a giant very dark grey 'black' gaming mouse mat that is perfect. No distractions on it, and parts of all colours including black are easy to spot on it.

And hope you don't end up in a wheelchair, where you'll have to build on a raised surface that pieces can drop off of.
Looks pretty neat, love the color chart particularly the blues xD
But I'm pretty sure Spaniard customs would want their cut and anyway very bad timing for me so I'll have to pass :|
Got mine in already an love it!! Works great!

I built a border on my table out of cardboard and tape to reduce the jailbreaks. The problem is keeping the kids from laying boxes on top of it.
I have one, and I work with Lego all day. Pro: very comfortable to work on, great information in the rulers, SNOT and curve techniques, tread link counters etc. Lots of interest from other Lego fans. Cuts noise of building down to almost zero.
Con: useless information (for me) in the colours, part numbers and gear ratios - but might be great for other people). Ruler is about 1mm off, which they mention on their website, so not for precise measurements but ok for distinguishing pieces by length in mm. Centre rectangle could have been a studs up grid. Maybe next version?
Overall I’m loving mine, very comfortable and useful, but other people may just enjoy a simple mat, or nothing (which is cheaper)

Yep - only £2.50 and absolutely ideal.
I'll repost my first impressions I originally put on Rebrickable;
- Brilliant ideas on what to fill it out with. Even down to the track counter at the side, there's so much that feels useable.
- Print is a bit soft on hard edges and text. I'd give it 3 stars out of 5 there, as a crisper print would feel more premium.
- The ruler is about 1% off a standard ruler. Good enough for estimates, and perhaps it'll adjust with time as it was unrolled today.
- I'll have to put my padded mouse mat on top of it. I didn't expect anything else, and wisely this area is not mission critical - some attractive snot examples but nothing a seasoned MOC builder hasn't internalised.
- The keyboard rectangle is 418 x 192mm. My chunky keyboard covers it, which is fine. (I push it backwards when building.)
- Bit stinky right out the packet, but that will fade.
- Bit of a nitpick, but the headlight brick doesn't show the side stud quite perfect - on the real brick it extends out farther than the base, and isn't supposed to be in line.
All in all, very happy with the product, and very happy to support a site I spend so much time browsing.

I don't doubt that there's a market (somewhere) for a biopic about this guy, but why LEGO?
I'm really curious to see how this movie is going to perform at the box office. Going by the totally boring trailer I can't see it doing particularly well. Maybe in the US, but internationally? Meh.

Quite. I think it's an O.K. novelty product. If it was a Lego item I could see it as a GWP or an Insider Reward but for $40? Someone's having a laugh!
Thanks for the discount, I ordered one! (Was wanting to, but the discount helped push me to do it.) For someone new to making their own builds, I think this mat will be really helpful, regardless of any slight imperfections, and since I've been using the site regularly lately, it feels good to help support it!

I have a mat made of exactly the same material that I use as a mousepad and under my keyboard. It's a mat that was made for collectable card games (Magic, Pokemon, etc), but I customized it with my own custom art for my web site.
I was planning to make another one and have it designed for Lego with brick rulers and all sorts of handy references...but Nathan beat me to it! Not only that, but he did even better than I had imagined for mine. ...so $40 for this awesome design which will save me the time of designing my own? YES, PLEASE!
Just ordered! Great idea and a handy tool with the color references!!
Is it usable as a mouse mat? I've been looking for a mouse mat for a long time and if it usable as a mouse mat AND a building surface I'm all for it!
seems to me like another case of an answer to a question nobody asked...

Yes, it took a while to arrive. The Track&Trace worked well. But it was worth the wait. I use it not only for building, but also as a mouse pad. I work a lot with Studio and use instruction manuals in PDF format (on screen). So I find the mat super handy.
