Another Exo-Suit teaser

Posted by ,

Another Exo-Suit teaser has surfaced, this time in the German store calendar for August. It doesn't give much away, does it...

The set will be available from August 1st online and in brand stores except at Bluewater in the UK where it'll be available a week early: Designer Pete Reid will be at the store signing boxes on 26th July.

By in United Kingdom,

I like the way this is shaping up, from these glimpses it looks as though it will be quite faithful to the original submission, which would be great!

I am hoping I will be at Bluewater too, so I am looking forward to that.

"Exo-Forice"? I think you mean "Exo Suit", unless you know something we don't.... :P
Anyway, it does look very promising for the rest of the set, but over on Eurobricks I've already seen several people complaining about that barrel being Dark grey..... Either way, I'm still looking forward to the official reveal. :)

EDIT: Looks like you changed it.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm tempted to try to go to the Bluewater event, has anyone got any more info on it - looked on the store calendar and it didn't even seem to have times.

By in Italy,

uhm the barrel is much worst than the wheel used on the original.. and they used the octagonal ring instead of the better looking circle.. and the elbow looks different too, it seems to have a 2x2 round tile with the bottom outward. Don't like what i see, but we'll wait for a complete picture

By in United States,

@Shib - The event will be from 12-4pm.

By in United Kingdom,

^ Yes, 12-4pm. I will also be going and hopefully we can rally a posse of Brickset users to descend on the store and make a day of it. More information to follow nearer the time...

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks guys, hopefully I'll be able to make it and see some Bricksetters there. Never been to an instore event so it could be a bit of an experience.

By in United Kingdom,

Bluewater event sounds fun, perhaps a Brickset magical mystery tour bus should be arranged?!

As for comments on parts included, perhaps they could be swapped with other parts, it is Lego after all.......

By in United Kingdom,

It seems to me that anyone making negative comments on a teaser that small are just looking for reasons to be disappointed with the final product!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

whooo... :)
verry much like the elbow part! not too fond of the barrel in the arm though, but not too bad either, and the hands will be biger than in the original, but that's extra useful for lifting large objects!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very excited for this I'm enjoying the build up especially the trailer. I think the final product will be amazing and the changes seen so far are very good IMO (not that there was anything wrong with the original "ideas" submission version of course).

By in United Kingdom,

I thought this event was just to meet the designer... if it's going to be available a week early AND he's signing them, I will very happily endure the some of the worst traffic blackspots on the M25 to get to Bluewater for midday! It takes an awful lot for me to say that... :-)

So if you see an eager but frustrated young woman at Bluewater, that will probably be me ;-)

By in United Kingdom,

I'm at Yorbrix so no Bluewater day out but thankfully the signed raffle copy is secured!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Saturday the 26th? I am up for popping along to Bluewater. It's just 5 mins away :)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

silly question, but is that a London store? I'll be there then and would love to get a signed copy.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Does anybody know something about price?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bluewater is just east of London near dartford

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Thanks jumpinbeans, I'll have to check out map when I have pc and decent internet access tomorrow.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It is just outside the M25, the London orbital ring road. It's a nuisance to get to by public transport from London, I believe, requiring a train and then a bus journey.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Depending on you are it isn't too bad time wise - if you can get to St.Pancras you can get the high speed train to ebbsfleet international which is about 18mins then a 5 min bus ride, if not you will need to get the train to either dartford (+bus) or Greenhithe and get the bus but this is the longer journey in terms of time. Note Dartford is outside Zones and there is no oyster there although you can use it on some TFL busses (492 and 96).

By in United States,

I love all the UK Bricksetters plotting the fastest course to get to this store on opening day. :-D LOL!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The price is supposed to be $34.99. If they could cast the lampshade in light grey, why not the barrel in silver ink?

I'm not wild about the five greeble-spikes from what we see. If we have green and pink spacesuits, though, that'll be enough for me! I can't wait to mod this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

In the photo with the German label across it, you can also see what appears to be the upper back area, with five pointy/greebley things on it rather than the single antenna in the original. Others pointed that out in yesterday's thread about this.

It's looking good so far, but I would have preferred they didn't use a barrel. It's not simply because I refuse to accept any change to Peter's original, but because certain pieces are much harder to see as other things. You can use a barrel in all sorts of ways, but it will always look like a barrel. Ordinarly that might not be a big deal, but it's a little jarring on a space-age exo-suit. Nonetheless, I'm excited for the set and looking forward to the next teaser.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^I completely disagree on the barrel - to me it looks like a rubber pump type piece in the context of the arm, and I love seeing clever use of existing parts. Quite often when I'm looking at a really good MOC seeing things like that are what make them shine to me because it challenges me on my perceptions of what pieces can be used where.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Interesting update. The arm looks fine. I would not be surprised if we're looking at a Flight of the Phoenix scenario where the Exo-Suit is made of re-purposed space parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mr PicnicBasket,

I May be wrong, but it appears to me that the center "spike" is in fact the original antenna Peter Reid used. It may be that the upper portion is too tall and has thus been cut out of the picture. Look closely.

Also, I highly doubt a pink space suit, as, although the pictures we have are all black and white, the suits appear to be the same color.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ Shib and CCC - Haha, I guess it's like that illusion where one person sees two faces and the other sees a vase. I can't help but see a barrel, but I guess that's just me. Either way, I agree that it's a good thing when TLG finds unconventional uses for certain parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As I said in a recent thread I just don't understand why these changes were necessary - the arms looked like the most stable part of the whole thing!

I can't see the barrel as anything but a barrel, it just looks wrong.

If I'm being cynical, it looks like the redesign was made of parts that are easier/less expensive for Lego to whip up rather than staying true to the original.

It DOES look like the original antenna is in the middle of the greeble-spines, but why fix what isn't broken? The single antenna is very stylish and simple, does anyone really think this thing needs MORE greebles?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@DanRSL I've handled the original exo suit and the whole thing is general pretty sturdy with the exception of the ankles and those arms. They fall off literally every time you touch the thing. I can completely understand why they had to be redesigned.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@0ldScratch

I'll have to take your word for it. The legs look like they're held up on a hope, so I expected them to be very reworked.

Just getting nervous, wish they'd show us the whole thing so we can either get hyped or get the grieving process over with.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I'm so exited for this set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh. Well, I'll just be tossing the greeble spikes in the parts bin, then, and keeping the antenna. I can always use more greebles. I'm worried about those legs, though... lots of the leg greebling was minifig hands and hooks.

I wonder what else is new in grey or silver. I really think the barrel would look better in silver, but it doesn't come in that color. I wouldn't mind if both spacemen were green, I just want them to both be in a new color.

This is excruciating! Reveal the whole set already, Peter Reid, so we can either fall in love with it or be very disappointed. Sorry, but this sneak peek isn't doing it for me. Extra antennas and fingers? Octagon ring plates and grey barrels? Yuck.

I find it ironic that Pete's favorite part is being used in a bad way in his own model.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Which part is that?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Seems to be a slight green blur on the top of the box... could it be?

Gravatar
By in United States,

What I'd like to see in this set would be interchangeability, like in the DeLorean set, where people could modify it to their own liking. Just like putting the Delorean's greeble-plate on the hood makes it look less blocky, this could have panels to "spruce up" various parts of it. Personally I'd like to see more classic space-type colors on this set, but lets see how it turns out! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, definitely looks like the foot was re-worked, but still looks a lot like the original. I like where this is heading! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks, KLF!

You know you're getting obsessive when you check this thread every 10 minutes or so for any hint of an update. I like what little the latest teaser reveals. The general shape of the foot seems pretty consistent with Peter's model. In fact, I like the vertically aligned "toe" a little better than the original horizontal one.

There's also a hint of yellow in there. Not sure if that's a trans-yellow stud or something else.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

new info within 12 hours :D
looks really neat :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Alright we see it in 12 hours. Get psyched!

Also does it bother anyone else that the helmet is crooked on the pilot in the final teaser ;P

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

To everyone complaining about the changes, you know I'm reading this right? Any changes made have been approved by Pete - and I only changed things that were too unstable - or were illegal builds! (For example clips placed on a curved bar - like the steering wheel - are not allowed.)

Pete posted me one of his original Exo-Suits when I started on this - it sits on my desk and was my inspiration and a direct comparison for any changes I made. I hope you like what we (Pete and I) came up with when you see it in 10 hours or so!

Gravatar
By in United States,

To be honest, I like where you are going with the spines on top of the suit, the old Exo's antenna looked kind of odd just sticking straight up in the air. The spines make it feel more complete. As long as the legs have ankle AND knee articulation, (which so many Lego mechs don't have) I think this set will be close to perfect!

Gravatar
By in United States,

shhhh...... i saw it after i posted :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

Four hours to go and all is quiet. A storm is coming. Mr. Reid's advertising strategy seems to have worked... I think every AFOL with even slight appreciation for classic space is waiting with anticipation at this point.

I am so hooked that I have been building turtles all day!

Every space project I have seen from Peter Reid has been awesome. With his amazing talent for intricate construction and design input from TLG to make it stable enough to have play value, we are certainly in for a real treat - especially if green classic space men and turtles are involved!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Nabii

You don't think we'd pull any punches just because you might read them? Au contraire mon frere! That's even more reason to be as bluntly honest as possible. I just hope the criticism can be helpful for you in the future.

I know, you contacted Pete to approve design, but sci fi fans learned a hard lesson that no one is infallible when The Phantom Menace happened. The same mind that produces endearing brilliance can also create... Jar Jar Binks. So not even Pete gets a pass ;)

I'm curious about the steering wheel, though. Is it just the slight curvature of the wheel that makes the clip illegal? I'm not sure I get it.

It's interesting to hear a little about the back and forth design collaboration you guys did, looking forward to seeing it in a few hours!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I literally just tried putting the robot arm "fingers" on the classic technique steering wheel while building turtles earlier ( it was in the same parts bin), and I found that it looked cool, but was very loose, both with the hinge action and a tendency for the arm clip to slide along the wheel. It fits, but just barely. This was great for the original exo-suit, since it was purely for display. A kid would have lost at least one of the suit's fingers after 2 minutes of play. The new hand is not quite as elegant, but it is much sturdier.
