Jurassic Park Returns to Ideas

Posted by ,

Since it was announced that LEGO would be on board with Jurassic World, it was pretty clear that the Jurassic Park license was going to be allowed back to Ideas eventually, and that time has now come.

Jurassic Park is therefore the second property to accomplish this; Doctor Who being the first.

For a quick review of how IP works on Ideas, in practice any IP that is not obviously outside of brand fit or on the "verboten list", can be posted to Ideas. When a project reaches 1000 support and 5000 support, there is usually a check for availability of the IP prior to the Official Comment by the Ideas staff. If the license for construction toys is being held by a third party, that project, and all projects with that IP are archived, and it is added to the "verboten list". Occasionally, subjects will be added from the review process (like Firefly) or if they get a lot of attention (Green Day).

Senteosan has already resubmitted his very popular project that was taken down when the IP was swept.

The review process, interestingly enough, holds true for even the most obvious of licensing conflicts such as properties that are exclusively held by Hasbro, such as Transformers (example project here), which even already has its own construction toy line.

Good, now to make a videogame Lego JP.

Probably won't take long for this to reach 10000 considering how well it did before.

But since they are releasing a Jurassic Park line next year, I don't see this becoming a set. Inevitable discovery.

Also, isn't there a JP LEGO game in the works next year since they have the license?

I think it's a law there has to be a video game of every LEGO license now-a-days.

Next year will be awesome with Jurassic World and the Doctor Who Ideas set.

I'm still wondering when the next review will be, wasn't it meant to be this october?

It would be odd if the Bricksauria | Tyrannosaurus rex gets to 10,000 first, why cant ideas put these on hold rather than starting them again at square one.

I didn't see that coming, after the KREO license and BrickQueen fiasco. But I expect great projects out of this!

Is there an up-to-date verboten list somewhere?

Right? Add on the fact that if Lego is making Jurassic World sets, this is redundant and won't make it anyway.

Anyone have confirmation about what happened last time? All the evidence points to a troll flagging campaign but I've never seen any proof of it.

That brick built T-rex is fantastic!

I can never understand the Hasbro thing regarding Transformers, after all both Hasbro and LEGO produce Marvel and Star Wars toys?! The JP set continues the trend for cheesey movie tie-ins. I wanna see some decent Tron sets on Ideas!

@mr_skinny: Marvel and Star Wars are outside properties licensed to Lego and Hasbro for separate types of merchandise (construction toys and action figures or board games respectively). The Lego Star Wars board game was not released in the US because it would have caused licensing issues with Hasbro. Transformers is an IP created and owned by Hasbro, and if Hasbro licensed Transformers it would be in direct competition with their own hold on the license.

LEGO would be foolish not to make a set like the one above in first tranche of JP/JW sets, IMO.

I bet it won't be quite so impressive, though...

There's a big difference between this and Doctor Who though - LEGO haven't (as far as we know) actually acquired that licence; it's just purely a future possibility. They announced they do actually have the Jurassic World / Park licence and clearly already have their own ideas what sets they'll be making. In that case, the original tour jeep and gates are all too obvious and hardly needs suggesting on Ideas.

Having said that, these two brick-built dinosaurs are fantastic and far more interesting as designs.

I think the brick-built Tyrannosaur and Stegosaur are brilliant, as well as the Jurassic Park gate and minifigure set. LEGO should just accept these Ideas now, and get them ready for release by summer of next year. Depending on the success of the new Jurassic World film out next year, I am sure there will be a surge of votes for all of these Jurassic Park Idea sets, most likely pushing them over the 10000 votes. However, based on the typical timing between votes success and actual release for previous Ideas, these sets probably won't be released until mid-2016, by which time interests in the sets would have likely dropped significantly. Each of the sets are of a decent affordable size (unlike many movie based sets that appear of Ideas), and the brick-built dinosaurs would certainly be appealing to UCS fans. So come on LEGO, just pass these Ideas sets through already, and get them in stores in time for the June 2015 release of Jurassic World. I think I also read there may be some official Jurassic World sets too - definitely looking forward to that.

^ You make a very good point add to that the fact that the JP one would have already got to 10,000 had it not been taken off.

If LEGO is smart, then they're already planning on releasing one or more sets based on the original films. We can only hope!!

I wish there was a way for dinosaurs to be awesome other than Jurassic Park. At this point, even though I hate time travel (because it's a lazy plot device - see all uses in Star Trek except City on the Edge of Forever), I'd rather have a movie about time travelers and dinosaurs than another Jurassic Park movie.

Does anyone know when the review results will be announced?

peterlmorris - like Land of the Lost?? Horrible, just horrible.

In terms of this license, I'd assume (and it's always safe to assume, right?) they would release a few early movie sets and then more on the new movie just to keep the buzz. Look at Harry Potter 2010/11, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.

It's the best way to flesh out sets people may actually want instead of banking it all on a new movie that might not be successful. Playing on older recognizable features practically seals a sale from fans.

Where does IP stand for?

IP= Intellectual Property

I can't believe how many votes Jurassic Park has already received in the first week! The Minas Tirith set has over 700 votes this week as well.

Is there a list anywhere of these "banned IP"? (I cant find it on the Ideas site)
