I love the photo where she is holding the tongue of the puppy! Not creepy at all!

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it was a Bernese mountain dog, I'd be all over it! A retriever isn't all that exciting, at least to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Guaranteed to be free from hip dysplasia

By in United Kingdom,

Maybe its because I'm a cat person... I just don't like this as much as 21349 Tuxedo Cat. That and theres just something slightly off about this model... I know they're different species, but I just can't help but see Scrappy Doo when I look at this. And everyone of a certain age will know why thats not a good thing.

By in United States,

While it looks like a good value for parts, the texturing just doesn't work for me, it's just a little too chaotic. It doesn't quite have the same feel as the Tuxedo cat. Maybe it looks better in person.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Aaaawww.

I prefer the Tuxedo Cat though. (Better value for money too).

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Something about it makes it look very uncanny.....I don't like it.

Gravatar
By in Japan,

The Tuxedo Cat looks better and I think I'll pass on this one.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

It looks like it has a permanently worried look.
Those wedge tiles at the top throw me off completely.

Well, these things can happen. Rarely and not necessarily in our reality, but you better be prepared.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Not interested at all but a very good looking set, well done designer

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks like a poodle which needs to be put out of its misery. I'm usually a massive fan of the animal sets but won't be buying this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Are we gonna talk about that incredible PPP though? I haven't seen such amazing value since the Saturn V!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No toilet roll?
No cat, fox, sheep or deer poo in mouth either, thankfully.
Its at least made me realise at this price that I should save for an actual dog, its a great model for displayers but what a parts pack!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Its cute :)

Gravatar

Hmmm...101 Dalmatians did well...Let's do a Canine Collection!

Most Golden Retriever pups have those Kind of eyes

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Strangely I don't really like dogs or cats (or hampsters) but I do rather like the Lego versions... maybe because they don't yap, bite or smell!
I do particularly like this because it's so obviously Lego and hasn't been made too smooth.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The big problem with this is "That is not the type of dog I have, my dogs breed is best breed"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I can see they were going for fur and texture with the piece choice, but it just doesn't look right, it sort of reminds you that it's lego and I think the eyes are too dark.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The set is named golden retriever, but the picture of the real dog on the box looks more like a labrador (at least to me).
The set itself looks pretty good, especially the snout. The ears and tail I'm not so sure of, but maybe thats just the pictures

Yeah the picture definitely looks like a lab to me too. Google image search agrees with us!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pros:
Adorable
Doesn't bark or shed

Cons:
Not a corgi

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There's a typo in the article title (it says 'Retriver', not 'Retriever')

Gravatar
By in United States,

Had this been Lady and/or the Tramp, I might have gone for it. Generic dog isn’t doing it for me - the Dalmatian and Simba seem like better models to me.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I hope pre-orders for sets will become more commonplace. Would love to secure GWP in a more stress free manner for the upcoming LotR D2C vs sniping on the website at 1 AM or melee in front of the store the morning of.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely less disturbing than most of Lego's attempts to make a realistic looking animal - the bizarre 'tongue removal' picture aside.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not a dog person but he looks great; we bought the Tuxedo Cat last year as he looked like our little shorthair, then I decided to Bricklink a dark grey version which I am sure will happen here too, different colours to match own pets! Cost a small fortune though....

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Hmm... Does anyone know if under tail he is as detailed as 31129 Majestic Tiger???

Gravatar
By in United States,

I personally think it's adorable.

But the size/price just aren't for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That’s way too skinny for a Golden puppy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One word...Ruff!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Having a Golden Retriever, I was really excited when this was rumored. Safe to say this more or less lived up to expectations. Very good looking model, and a pretty good price. Will be buying!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Adorable, looks great! I love the poses it can do. I like it more than the Tuxedo Cat.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

No smart brick
Bark sound when the mail van is nearby, panting when the tongue is out

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very cute, but I never had a lab, so I’d feel weird having a Lego model of one.

A Lego Great Pyrenees with heterochromia though? Highly specific, but I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not coming up super popular in the poll, but this is exactly the kind of set non-Lego fans go nuts for.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The ears and the top of the head remind me more of a Cocker Spaniel (the American kind) but overall it's a very cute and effective model, even though I'm not very fond of yellow Labs myself. Selective color modification could make it into a number of other breeds, and I like the built-in flexibility. Could make a great partner for either a Dalmatian set or the Tuxedo Cat....

For real. There is no reason NOT to do this so they can accurately grasp the demand beforehand. People upset that they missed the Kanto Badges atleast had almost a full day. Compared to less than 1hr as usual.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego has made a lot of REALLY cute sets lately but this one just isn't cute enough for some reason.

As an artist I have observed that dog lovers will usually only buy a painting of a dog that looks like their dog where as a cat lover will buy a painting of a cat even if it doesn't look like their cat. Personally I find this distinction baffling. So the issue you have identified will affect 11384 more than it ever did with 21349.

Oof, that is rather embarrassing. I was wondering why they would pick a reference picture of a pup that doesn’t even come remotely close to having the fur that the model does, but it being the wrong race to begin with is an even more incredible blunder, lol!

Gravatar
By in United States,

i'm still waiting for new BrickHeadz Pets

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

In my country it's possible to get a real puppy for that amount.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Too bad that it is so monochrome. At least the cat was black and white.

People may say that the dog is also monochrome. But actually, the belly has lighter fur, for example.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

The resolution is off. Could be the mircoshadows of the tan amplifying the bumpiness. It’s a good spaceship though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the designer did a great job. And if it were a Shih tzu, I'd highly consider it. But I will have to pass otherwise.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

When I see this, and considering all the moving parts, I'm thinking maybe I'll have a few desired parts recoloured in tan (unless the inside of this dog is multicoloured as Lego do nowadays). For all the set released so far, none have presented the parts in the colour I need, not a good start so far. Last year I got so many of the parts in the colour I needed. Eventually...

This set is a good part pack at a reasonable price - for what you get. The pictures are nice from the front but not so much from profile. I like dog just as much as cat (had both for many years) but I think the Tuxedo cat looks better. This might be one of those instance where it is better to see it in real life than just pictures - I would assume the designer iterated with this until it looked fine.

The cat is also better because cats tend to like being static in front of a window for hours. A dog is more of a dynamic animal jumping and running around (especially as a puppy).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

A nice looking model, but as others have said it isn't a good as the Tuxedo cat. The cat was a good choice since it doesn't look out of place on a shelf, on a desk, on top of the fridge or any of the hundreds of other places cats like to perch. ( I have mine sitting on the coffee table) A model of a dog would only look right sitting on the floor or maybe a couch so the display options seem much more limited.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

it looks like its made of clay instead of bricks. I am sure kids and dog lovers will like this set :D

Yes, I know at least one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sometimes. there can be too much greebling, too many slope changes. Tuxedo Cat knew when to maintain straight lines. If we’re going for Golden Retriever and/or trying to emulate the puppy pictured on the box, then the designer has to slow their roll with the fur. They absolutely captured some naturalistic reality with the changing slopes, just not the reality of a Golden Retriever.

It’s clearly well done and clearly a dog but a part of me wants to see what the community does to make it more Golden Retriever. I’m also a bit surprised how static it is and the amount of gizmoesque surgery required to pose it…

Gravatar
By in Italy,

"No, it doesn't interest me" at 56%? How can this community be so heartless?

I often see it claimed that a set would appeal to a non Lego fan. I'm not convinced. While some sets may re-spark someone's long held interest in Lego, I find it hard to believe that anyone would suddenly decide they need a building toy in preference to the much more accurate, much cheaper, non building toy models available. If I hadn't got the Lego bug as a child, it certainly wouldn't be costing me the huge amounts it does today!

How does a multi-billion dollar company get this wrong?!
And continue to make silly mistakes like this, all the time!? (like misprinted stickers!)

Having said this ….. I really like this set!
I’m shocked there’s so much disdain / disinterest among the vocal Brickset posters!
This will sell like hotcakes in the non-AFOL community.

By in Norway,

This could've been a nice gift for my sister who has a dog, but I had to vote "too expensive". Normally that 140$ price would translate to 1400kr (which is quite reasonable), but with the current abysmal ewxchange rates it's actually 1900kr, or 35% more.

I agree it doesn't appear shaggy enough to be a Golden and appears more like a Lab. Yet, they are fairly similar at the puppy stage.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This will sell tremendously well. It's a good design and reasonably priced.

However, I foresee- not unlike real puppies- that many will soon tire of the large shedding brick object which is always plaintively begging for attention. Then, comes the dust.

As a result, many will be haphazardly tossed into the secondary thrift market. There will be a greater glut of these than BB-8 and Grogu combined.

There's a middle ground between bringing someone out of a dark age and getting someone interested in Lego for the first time: Piquing someone's interest by showing how much Lego has changed since they were kids. This doesn't necessarily bring them out of a dark age, as they may just buy one set that's relevant to other interests.
