First images of this year's train set
Posted by Huw,
Brickset user L@go is at LEGO World Copenhagen and has published images of many of this year's City sets that are being displayed on a layout that the City designers put together.
Among them is 60098 Heavy-haul Train, which according to neoape where I read about the images, "looks to include a red train engine with three cargo wagons. Two of the cargo items are a backhoe and helicopter. There may also be a crane included to help load things into one of the cargo containers."
It's perhaps surprising that another freight train is being released so soon after last year's 60052 Cargo Train. Clearly there is a market for them.

If true, this'll be another 'extra' red cargo train to add to what's available, following in the footsteps of Set 3677 Red Cargo Train from 2011. Didn't 3677 also make its first public appearance at the Copenhagen show?
It actually looks a lot like a red version of Set 7939 Cargo Train (which was yellow) but it sounds like the rolling stock will be different.
There also seems to be a previously-unknown Diving set:

Store exclusive, maybe?
A helicopter on a train? I can't say I've ever seen such a thing.
That's the closest to a proper System-scale backhoe that's been done since 6662 over 20 years ago. Too bad it's in a $150+ train set. I'd think a backhoe and operator with a pile of bricks would sell like hotcakes in the $15-$20 range. Maybe backhoes aren't as prevalent in Europe as in the US?
Is the below a set, or just one of the creations to support the set?

This is what I was expecting from the Deep Sea theme.
Stylistically, I think set 60052 was aimed at the American market, where as 60098 is more in a European style; looking very much like a Deutsche Bahn Schenker colour scheme. Backhoes are certainly common in Europe and I would also like to see lego make more of them.
How many places can they stick helicopters?! Geez.
Is it my imagination or is there a green Futuron astronaut in this picture? https://www.flickr.com/photos/legolago/15888573133/
As a railway engineer I have to say I agree with Bricklunch, looks very similar DB Schenker's colour scheme, and it is very nice to see more European style locomotives, although I think another 10219 equivalent American freight loco is overdue
^^ Yes, the Futuron minifigure is part of 60097.
to be honest, i'm more interested in the very familiar looking train in this image :)

Great spot - I hadn't noticed that before!
Too many of the sets in these pictures seems not to be official sets, they`re only made for this display..
There is a new deep sea set that has the plane and underwater base in.
Yay, I knew a train was coming. 60052-1 is becoming hard to find.
But a bit disappointed that it's little more than a rehash of 7939-1, and in a less pleasing colour too.
Love all the stuff that comes with the train, but I hope it's not too overpriced...
I see a new (and useless) windshield on the Divers plane. As for the rest... a clear look at Divers only makes them look disappointing-er and the space sets look better.
...and the space shuttle is as bad as I feared. Yet another rehash with another huge single-use element.
What I'm most interested in seeing from LEGO World are behind-the-scenes images — not just future sets, but things like prototype sets and figures. In past years we've seen some really amazing Hero Factory and Legends of Chima prototypes. I'd also love to know, in general, what kind of presence my favorite themes like BIONICLE, Ninjago, and Elves have there!
The City display looks great, though I haven't got the time to keep up with the discussion over which models might be unannounced sets and which are simply MOCs. But both the things I recognize as summer sets and the things I recognize as MOCs definitely look nice!
I do not collect LEGO City sets but I am always interested in seeing what it has to offer since it is more or less the "baseline" for the kind of world LEGO minifigures inhabit. Many of my favorite themes exaggerate scale or add fantasy elements to things for whatever reason, and I love them for it, but City is what really tells me what MY world might look like in LEGO!
The train set features the rolling stock you see connected to it in the pictures (with the backhoe and the helicopter) plus the blue rotating crane and the base it stands on. There's also a female train worker which makes use of Gail's hairpiece/helmet from the LEGO Movie minifigs.
The City Square features the car dealership with at least two cars, the white and green flatbed truck, the orange tram, the tram/bus stop, the coffee booth (with a female barista torso without a nametag, to go with Larry), the tiny hot dog stand, the LEGO store (and yes, there's a Futuron torso in there - I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow morning), the LEGO truck, the TV helicopter and a pizza delivery guy (with a new torso) on a scooter.
The previously unknown Divers set features the yellow subsea base, a submarine (not entirely sure which one yet), and that dark blue plane. That's the exclusive set for certain retailers.
The space shuttle features the little yellow astronaut transporter with a front section made from a yellow 2x6x2 windscreen.
The training jet set (which I hadn't seen before) features a nice big trailer truck and one training jet with folding wings.
As for the rest of the tempting stuff on display and in my pictures - the Ghostbusters firehouse, the yellow rail crane, and the train with the Metroliner colour scheme... no, they're neither upcoming sets nor hints of upcoming sets. They're models built by one of the LEGO designers for display at events only. Sorry!
I'll try to add a couple of new pics to my Flickr tomorrow morning. I'll also ask more about the Divers sets.
I've had a helicopter-carrying flat-bed truck for one of my Lego trains for years now. But I've used one of the smaller polybag-type sets.
I love trains, but this one seems little more than a red version of 7939. The back-hoe also seems like an updated repeat of the red-truck/yellow-excavator set that came out in '91.
Disappointing to see a 7939 rehash and seems strange to release a cargo train so soon after the last one. That being said I might buy it based on the wagons and the possible inclusion of the crain in the set and a good amount of (non-flex) track. The helicopter inclusion is somewhat unnessasary IMO and I would have prefered a box car or container wagon.
We do see too much of the same thing from lego, the underwater line is filled with boats, planes and helicopters when only the new boat was needed the rest could have been you know in the sea.
I'm really quite disappointed with that.
^well I suppose if you are TLG, then you have two of your own (very similar) products possibily competing against each other? But agreed they did it before so why not again? how did it work out for them before? couldn't have been that bad as they would not make the same mistake again. I personally skipped 3677 because I had 7939 already so they lost that sale from me on 3677 ( I spent money on another lego sets all the same LOL). All that being said I suppose releasing close together gives the consumer more choice, not least between a US styled loco and a European one in addition to the wagons and other extras's with each set which someone might favour in one set more than the other.
That Loco is so uninspiring I'm not sure i will bother and this was the set i was looking forward to most this year. What would be good instead of selling trains only in large sets of many models is to go back and release individual wagons, tankers and coaches. I would happily buy 10 tankers to make a long train and also 4 to 6 coaches.
I think this can only be good, the more train sets we get can only mean Railways are on the up and we might start get some accessories!
The last time there was an off-release red cargo train (3677) it was made a retailer exclusive. I would imagine the same thing will happen here leaving 60051/52 in general release.
What about the green train here?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/legolago/16329475100/
Looks identical to the Maersk train except all green in place of the Maersk colors.
Will that be released?
And what about this?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/legolago/16508416801/
@Legowookie I couldn't agree more! individual cars, wagons and maybe train related structures (outside of stations) would be most welcome! I guess the market for these is limited given we have not had such offerings for many many years.
Gunther: the first one is a Maersk train with colour substitutions. They do this from time to time just for fun. The other one - well, just read the image title on Flickr :)
