LEGO Star Wars in 100 scenes
Posted by Huw,
The first DK LEGO book of interest to AFOLs for 2015 has just been published. LEGO Star Wars in 100 scenes contains (paraphrasing from the introduction) "one hundred brick-built scenes full of intrigue, betrayal, battles, droids, politics, heroes and surprises."
DK LEGO books are normally a joy to behold but I felt that this one was very disappointing.
It's a 216-page hardback that's the same size as most recent DK books. Each of the 100 scenes is set out on a two-page spread which are ordered chronologically in movie order (1-6).
Speech bubbles and boxes pointing out particular aspects of the scene such as the character or location names are spread around the pages so consequently it's not a book that you're likely to read from start to finish, but to dip into 'coffee book' style. They are not particularly enlightening, to be honest, although I suppose they do provide needed background information if you're not au fait with every scene.
Each page also has a 'LEGO facts' box which contains tidbits about the scene or minifigs. They've been compiled by none other than Brickset staffer Chris, aka CapnRex101, so as you'd expect they are accurate and interesting.
The most disappointing aspect of the book is that the scenes are pretty much all made up from stock photos or other shots of official sets. There are a few that I don't recognise that may have been constructed specially for the book but they are very much in the minority so if you're hoping for building inspiration or great MOCs, these are not the models you are looking for...
Other than Chris's input, the only redeeming feature is the price: The RRP is £14.99 but it's currently £5.81 at Amazon.co.uk, which is less than I paid (£8) on Thursday!
In the USA, Amazon.com indicates that it'll be out later this week, at a price of $14.47.
So, worth picking up if you can get it at the right price but it's not a bookshelf essential by any means.

I am disappointed now. I was expecting much more from this book, like you said, models more like MOCs than just box covers. Now the only reason I want it is for the LEGO facts!
Well that´s a big disappointment!
A school in my district had it available with the "exclusive" Celbration Luke Minifigure from the original Visual Dictionary
That's disappointing. =(
Bummer. It sounds like it's more or less a catalog of SW LEGO sets. I was hoping for MOCs.
I'll look into this, but yes, looks disappointing.
That's too bad. I was picturing fully lego'ed scenes from the movies...a rare disappointment from DK.
"Brick-built scenes" Not really. There is hardly any LEGO other than the sets in the images provided, and while some of the stuff from that scene from Phantom Menace look brick-built, even if it was, the minifigs are out of scale becuase they've been photoshopped in. That's very disappointing. Let's get AC Pin and markus19840420 to show them how it's done.
Can I get mine signed by CapNRex101?
Cancelled my pre-order. Thought it might make a cool coffee table book to flip through, guess not. Thankfully it's not like there is a shortage of great Star Wars and LEGO books coming out this year.
It said that it will be "all of the scenes made from LEGO bricks". This is just a set box picture art.
What did they do for Episode III Padme? She hasn't had an exclusive fig. Or what about things that haven't had sets since the early '00s, like the Cloud Car or Bounty Hunter Pursuit? This book is a failure.
I pre-ordered my copy and it arrived on Easter Saturday. I've enjoyed the previous DK LEGO books that I've bought and so this seemed like a good purchase. Disappointed is the word. Good job it only cost me a fiver in the end. Once I've looked through it I doubt that I will ever pick it up again.
