LEGO set to reveal something later this week

Posted by ,

It's a slow news day so although these two teasers LEGO has posted on Facebook here and here probably have nothing to do with proper LEGO construction products it's been suggested that nevertheless you might like to speculate what is being revealed on Thursday this week.

Could it be the Skylanders/Disney Infinity-like 'toys to life' product that rumours broke out about whilst I was away a week or so ago?

Thanks to Aanchir for the suggestion :)

By in Netherlands,

I was hoping for a late LotR or Hobbit set, taking in to account Gandalf is in the first picture. But seeing Lucy in the second one my hopes and dreams are roughly put in the garbage.
The videogame portal idea seems logical. Although this means yet another series to collect...
I really am a LEGO addict ....

By in Netherlands,

no lego midle-earth:(

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

If they start a 'Toys-to-Life' product, let them start with an own IP then. (Thinking about it while writing: ) Aren't the app-bricks from Ultra Agents not already toys-to-life?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope its a toys to life game, than Disney infinity will stop taking my lego funds :p but it might be the trailer for one of the movies, doesn't ninjago come out late this year?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I saw the profile of Gandalf in the teaser photo and freaked out thinking LEGO was finally going to produce another Middle-earth set. Then I saw the weird blue thing and my hopes were crushed. :-( Still, if LEGO does make a Skylanders knock-off thing we could see a Middle-earth line from that with some new figs/small sets from Middle-earth.

By in United States,

Lego Universe 2.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I don't care about virtual bricks. Luckily for my wallet.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego Movie 2 teaser trailer.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That glowing thing reminds of an arc reactor from Iron Man. Anyone else think that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't want them to jump on the figures-to-games bandwagon. LEGO is about toys, the games are a side product.

Gravatar
By in United States,

At least it shows the Lego/LOTR relationship hasn't been completely severed. And if this is some kind of ongoing service/game/whatever, the relationship must be expected to continue for a while. If the split was imminent they wouldn't bother making joint ads like this. At least I wouldn't think so.

Not holding out hope for any further sets though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is clearly a teaser for the Dark Bucket.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really don't want a Lego toys to kife game because it would only be good if you could scan in real minifigures. I don't want fixed figurines or minifigures that cost £10+ each just to unlock a character in a game.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh gosh, someone in the comments above said Lego Universe 2. That would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

Maybe it'll be some system to import characters from one TT video game to another... but probably not...
Anyway, thanks for the news, I didn't know about this...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, thanks to Gandalf, it looks like middle earth ain't destroyed yet. And if is Toys-to-Game thing game, well my wallet is going to be broke. Disney Infinity was a good game, but if Lego did a game, I will be extremely excited! If this were true I'd hope for.....
1. LOTR Line
2. Super Heroes Line
3. City (Only because of parts used in game, I prefer liscensed sets.)
4. STAR WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By in United States,

LEGO Universe rebooted!?!
Those big, glowing circles look like portals. I'm interested to see what they post in the next few days...

By in Canada,

@8brickmario: I agree with that, and I believe LEGO also agrees with that. However, that's exactly why they've been experimenting with different ways of trying to integrate their toy and game experiences, in order to create a greater connection between new digital LEGO play and the physical LEGO play that has always been their core business.

The app bricks in Ultra Agents are one example of that, as were LEGO Life of George and LEGO Fusion. I don't know if "toys to life" is the solution LEGO has been seeking all this time, but I think it might be a step in the right direction. It all depends how they pull it off.

Other NFC figures from brands like Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and Nintendo Amiibo mostly tend to be static figurines. Outside the digital experience, they have little play value. If LEGO can develop a type of NFC figure that is somehow integrated with the kind of creative construction play LEGO is known for, I think they will have hit on something big, and something that other competitors in the field won't be able to match (since none of them have inherent ties to a construction toy brand). I don't know if that's what they'll be doing here, but I feel like that's what they're trying to work towards.

Anyway, these teasers are a rather creative marketing technique. Instead of them all being in one place, they're being shared across different pages with ties to the LEGO brand. It'll be interesting to see where the final teaser turns up tomorrow!

By in United States,

Movie sequel.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@MorkMan: Unlikely. The LEGO Movies for the next two years are focused on LEGO Ninjago and LEGO Batman. I can't think of any reason why the Lord of the Rings Facebook page would be used to promote either of those theme-specific movies, nor can I think of any reason we'd get a trailer for "The LEGO Movie Sequel" (which is coming out in 2018) before we get trailers for either of the previous two movies.

By in Australia,

It's Dumbledore! Back from the dead to announce more HP sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good speculation. It probably is the video game. They're due out late fall.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I dislike 'Toys to Life' games, if you get the minifigs, why not just play with them in real life? We'll just see what happens on Thursday and Friday.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I liked the Toys to Life idea when Skylanders did it, but now everything seems to need to have toys to unlock all the content in a game. Heck, even Nintendo is doing it! LEGO sets are expensive as it is without fancy tech to do that!
Also I think these minifigures may not be who we think they are. Maybe it is just someone with a similar outfit?

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I want bricks, I buy bricks. If I want a video game, I buy a video game. I don't want to pay more for my bricks because they unlock some widget in a video game, and I don't want to have my video game limited so they can force me to buy one-off real life objects to unlock certain widgets in the game.

I realize, of course, I'm not their target audience however. If this is what the market wants, then good on them I guess. I despise the conjoining in general myself though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I say Trailer for Lego Movie 2

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it is something movie TV or game related. The presense of Gandalf and Wildstyles implies some Warner Brothers tie to whatever it is. Maybe a Lego Movie Universe type game? Maybe a master builder TV show? That blue thing reminds me a bit of the tunnels between worlds and to the real world in TLM.

Regardless I suspect the safe bet is its not more LotR sets, nor is it the Gondor Ideas project.

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

@Lego_Fox
But why it has been posted on the LOTR facebook page if that is not Gandalf? Same thing about the Wildstyle on the Lego Movie page... No, I really think the minifigs are indeed those two.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Check out the eye in the upper center of that blue portal thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is not lego Universe rebooted or two. Lego shut that down because not enough people bought it. It is most likely a "the lego movie 2" publicity thing, trying to be on the front pages of both LOTR and LEGO fan websites.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The portal screams toys to life at me. If they do toys to life I hope they will keep the traditional minifig, maybe they could do a spinjitsu style spinner to hold it. I would only buy them in sets not as individual minifigs.

Also as there are lego movie characters and lego lotr characters maybe there could be a lego lotr movie with sets (fingers crossed).

Gravatar
By in United States,

you know, after playing around with the colors in Photoshop, it appears as if bricks are being sucked trough a portal...
also, the background "portal" image seams to be identical in both pictures.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

if it's a video game I very much doubt I'll be playing it unless it's in the tried and tested TT games format. It does seem odd to make all the licenses overlap though (assuming a Star Wars figure on the last teaser day).

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw The more I read the headline, the more I think that your next April Fools article needs to have the same title...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Clearly a teaser for a Galidor re-release due to the excitement generated here on Brickset's articles a few days ago. Thanks for helping me clear those dogs out of my Bricklink store Huw ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Your on the right track Carlitofox, I have heard strong rumors of a toys to life game, with min-figs and actuall piece builds involving a bunch of IP's all together, Simpsons, Wizard of Oz in addition to most of the ones you listed.

Gravatar
By in Viet Nam,

I hope that is going to be lego universe 2

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I'm so hyped!

Every theme will come to Elvendale? Hahahah!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Look at the links when you roll your mouse over them...

Link 1: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Link 2: The LEGO Movie.

Is LEGO going to release another LEGO Movie in a few years (Batman movie maybe, although we know about it), and is there going to be sets based on the LOTR trilogy?

Just keep guessing...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Although, that blue light does look an awful lot like the vortex from Doctor Who. Maybe it's in reference to the new Ideas set, like the Doctor Who universe linking into the lego universe and all the different themes, in other words joining them.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Sick! Hope whatever it is it's not to expensive.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you click on it you see a LOTR trilogy Facebook page.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ok, i hope it's a toy come to life thing, but some other ideas i have is LEGO universe 2 also. here's why: if you go to Gazillion.com, you will notice some black title that says: TOP SECRET. WHAT DO YOU THING!?!?!?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Johhny was also in the TLM sets...so it's nothing too special anymore.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, maybe a LEGO universe like game with different worlds like Castle, Bricksburg, and LOTR. OR a LEGO movie video game with all the worlds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

When I first saw it I was hoping it was Rincewind, but yeah, probably Gandalf, and probbably for some video game. I am not the target market if thats the case. No biggie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There is now also a batman picture on the batman Facebook page. If you follow the links in the OP and follow the breaktherules you will find the batman pic as the top hit.

Gravatar
By in United States,

How sure are people that it's Gandalf? The beard looks rather white to me there... Regardless, any characters released so far would point to its being at least remotely connected to the Lego Movie, whether by means of the sequel or a game.

Gravatar
By in United States,

it is for sure gandalf because it was on the LOTR Facebook page

Gravatar
By in United States,

also i think they won't have more lego movie sets (or we would have known) or a lego movie trailer besides what does that have to do with BreakTheRules

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm gonna go on a limb and say Lego Movie Animated Series.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The scene looks like that moment before the Balrog strikes swords with Gandalf when his staff produces the sphere of light around him!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The LEGO Movie goes Disney Infinity?!

I have mixed feelings about that. How are these things going to be scanned into the game? Disney Infinity's figures are basically chips identifying the character in the body of an unposeable figure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There is now a Batman picture on the official Batman Facebook page. So now there's Gandalf, WyldStyle, Batman, and Johnny Thunder.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Also on the LEGO twitter page there is a video that teases the announcement

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Just so everybody knows, that Johnny Thunder account is not official in any way, nor is the picture it uses. It's just an unofficial role-play account joining in on the fun.

It's extremely easy to make your own "BreakTheRules" image, seeing as we have a version of the background without any characters in front of it: https://twitter.com/simonlucas80/status/585907637121896448

The Batman one is today's official teaser. Tomorrow we get to see what all these things are leading up to.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Please be a remake of lego universe! I loved that game!

Gravatar
By in United States,

btw, breaktherules is exactly the theme of the first Lego Movie, not building things how the instructions go, etc. etc. Duh!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir thank you. I thought that Johnny thunder picture looked strange.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

All the characters used for the teasers are in a way owned by Warner Bros and in turn are all part of the Lego Movie. I wonder if the portal refers to a way that real people can contribute to the next Lego Movie with their own animations? It would certainly 'break the rules' of normal film making but I guess we'll see tomorrow!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Back to the future :( WHY!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not surprised by BTTF, it's another Warner Bros owned IP.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Could it be something to do with lego movie 2. Because lucy and gandlof (that might not be the right spelling) were both in the lego movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@LegoCam567: I like the idea about the time vortex, but what about all the bricks being sucked in? It doesn't really look like the time vortex, either, and it wouldn't make sense for them to use Doctor Who to connect all their themes. Wait... Yes it would, actually. The Doctor goes everywhere in space and time, why shouldn't he go to Lego City? If it was Doctor Who, why would they use Gandalf and Wyldestyle standing next to the time vortex? They seem like unusual choices for a Doctor Who ad. Of course, that could be a vortex manipulator that Wyldestyle has. Don't know how Gandalf got into the vortex, though.
More likely, it's another video game, probably another toy to game. Everyone is copying Skylanders' success, and they were bad enough. I do not like toy to game games. But, everyone is obsessed with them, so it's only a matter of time before Lego takes its share. Maybe a Lego one will be better.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego Dimensions. Toys to life. A bit sad.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego Dimensions. We knew it. I hate the whole toys to life thing, but maybe, if I'm lucky, Lego will make it worthwhile. Or it will be around for a while and then abruptly shut down like Lego Universe. I hope there is an iPad version.
