Nexo Knights logo revealed

Posted by ,

The Nexo Knights theme rumoured for release at the beginning of 2016 has provoked a great deal of intrigue over the past few weeks, but today we have our first visual clue of what to expect. This logo emerged on Eurobricks a few hours ago and has since sparked even more conjecture on various fan sites.

Thus far rumours have indicated that the theme will be a fusion of castle and steampunk, although I don't think the logo supports that. To me it looks more like a combination of medieval and modern technology, as does the word 'nexo,' which certainly doesn't have steampunk connotations. I wonder whether the characters will be space knights of some kind instead.

Anyway, it will be very interesting to see what becomes of the theme as LEGO will be putting a lot of promotion behind it by all accounts, on the level of Ninjago and Legends of Chima.

A few hours ago, eh?

I can't wait to see how the sets look!

By in United Kingdom,

Err... Sci's right. That was ONE DAY and a few hours ago... :P

Anyway, over on EB, it's known already to be a modern take on Castle. The Space theme was due to return next year anyway, so this combines them, much to many fans' disgust. (Not mine.)

And we are to expect a TV show from the theme too, so... :)

(Anyone smell useless Nexo Knights magazine similar to Chima's?)

By in United States,

Yeah, definitely not going to be "steampunk", it looks like it'll be sci-fi or "space" or something. Remember the good guys from the Halo video games are "spartans". Similarly I expect, if there is any castle at all, for it to be deeply steeped in "space" or sci-fi, much like Ninjago.

@CM4Sci - The article was written last night, at which point it was only a few hours. We delayed it for the Winter Toy Shop reveal.

By in United States,

That's a shame that it isn't Steampunk Knights, but Modern/Futuristic Knights sounds like it will still work fine. Looking forward to seeing how the theme plays out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

this certainly sounds far more interesting than Chima, but we will see what the sets end up looking like.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm definitely looking forward to the reveal.

By in Puerto Rico,

Could be great could be bad, time will tell when Lego reveals the sets and we have reviews of them.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I wonder if it will be a Knights Kingdom kind of thing? (8774)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This appears to be following the same strategy as Knights Kingdom II and Chima- minifigure-sized sets, as well as large Constraction figures. Hopefully it won't be 5 on 1 like with Knights Kingom...

By in Belgium,

I realy want to see the sets.

I feel a He-Man vibe with that logo.

By in Canada,

I think people are mostly saying "steampunk" because there isn't really too much more of a catch-all term for stories that blend the past, present, and future into one science-fantasy blend.

Really, though, this sounds almost like the OPPOSITE of Steampunk. Instead of a world where technologies of the past developed into something resembling visions of the future, it's a world where technologies of the future developed into something resembling visions of the past. Anyone know if there's a term for that? I know it's not something LEGO invented...

From all indications, this is going to be next year's "big bang" theme. A "big bang" is "a homegrown LEGO theme that's built around an arresting story, one that shows a high potential for creating a worldwide sensation and generating lucrative revenue streams from the Web, television, and spin-off products, just as Bionicle had done for the better part of a decade." (Brick by Brick, p264) Atlantis, Ninjago, Friends, Legends of Chima, The LEGO Movie, and Elves are examples of previous "big bang" themes.

Given how much I've enjoyed past "big bang" themes (and story-driven/character-driven themes in general) I have high hopes for Nexo Knights. But at the same time, I don't know if it's something I'll be able to commit to collecting, since Bionicle, Ninjago, and Elves (my trifecta of favorite themes at the moment) are all continuing next year. It might end up being something like Friends or Legends of Chima where I just barely follow the story and pick up occasional sets, particularly when I can get a good deal. Of course, if the story turns out to be really, really good like Ninjago's story, all bets are off!

@DanRSL: Well, there is supposed to be a robo-horse, apparently, so that alone indicates it's probably a lot more heavily medieval-inspired than Halo (though still very obviously futuristic). One of the characters (probably a villain) also sounds like they're jester-inspired.

@SprinkleOtter: I don't know what to expect from the "Ultimate (character name)" sets from the leaked set list. They could be constraction sets, but Amazon.de listed them as 10 euros each, which is on the lower end of the recent constraction price range. They could also potentially be brick-built action figures kind of like the Legend Beasts from LEGO Legends of Chima (which might be interesting to see), or even some type of "gimmick" sets like the Ninjago spinners or Legends of Chima Speedorz.

@malloon: To an extent, insofar as it is going to be a character-driven "castle" line. But it seems like it has more in common with what the theme was originally conceived as (a more overt science-fantasy story) than what it eventually became (a fairly run-of-the-mill medieval fantasy story, albeit with colorful and stylized armor and few physical swordfights).

By in United States,

The theme may prove to be interesting and fun, but, seriously, the title Nexo Knights sounds pretty lame.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir Yeah, you're right. On reviewing the set names, they're probably strong on the Castle side as well. The closest comparison that comes to mind immediately is Vampire Hunter D, but obviously more child-friendly. This kind of high-fantasy meets sci-fi is nothing new.

I'm sure they'll WANT this to be a "big bang" theme, but just like we learned with Chima, it doesn't always pan out the way they hope.

Pretty much the polar opposite of you I dislike the story-driven themes, so I don't expect this will appeal to me unless they have very fun or clever builds (Ultra Agents ALMOST won me over on a few, but didn't quite). Which frankly I'm not too upset about because it's nice to take a break every now and then. Plus, the overpriced (as far as bricks are concerned) Dimensions sets might be a drain if the excess video game parts don't resell well, which I fear will be a flooded market.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought that relation might be possible too. @Curious. If that was the case, that may mean some Nordic elements could be blended into the theme. Which would be fantastic, Since the Viking sets in 2006-2005 had a small and limited run. Also the fact that Nexo is a danish town is interesting. (Since LEGO is a danish company)

By in United States,

What we know for sure is that Europe will get them before we will here in America... :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks very interesting, cant wait for the photos to come out :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

So it's a fusion of castle and space. Fun.

I hope the set design is more in line with Agents then this year's craptastic Chima...

By in Japan,

My body is ready!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Take away the "N" and you have Exo Knights. By adding Knights to the defunct Exo-Force theme, you might have an idea as to what I think Nexo Knights might look like. I think the "N" was added to be alliterative. Also, I am betting the name of the Kingdom will be "Nexo".

Gravatar
By in United States,

I bet its a futuristic castle theme and the knights have swords that shoot energy beams like Bionicles weapons. I wonder what the enemy will be. They gotta fight someone :)

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

scifi meets high fantasy? Star Wars! :p

bad joke aside, hope to see some new weapons moulds n helmets n armor. And a new castle or 2 or 3. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am very curious to see what this theme looks like. The idea of "space castle" is very appealing. A robotic horse would be just the thing.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

For people who care:
NEXO is: the process of bringing ideas or events together in memory or imagination

I think it's BRILIANT name and I hope the show this theme will get will be more Building related than ninjago and chima.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

on of the definisions of Nexo is:
the process of bringing ideas or events together in memory or imagination

I can't wait

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Where are you guys coming up with that definition of the word "Nexo"? I've checked a number of dictionaries and no such word exists.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is that a new sword piece I see on the logo? On the shield?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Spastle has been a fan theme for years, if it's an official take on that I cannot wait!

Afterwards Lego, can we have space pirates please?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope I don't like this theme, because otherwise my wallet is going to get another beating next year...

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Regarding the set list:
If it turns up to be like a Knights Kingdom, I will have to skip it. That theme I did not like at all.

Lets hope for the best then.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pretty sure it's a 60-40 fusion of Knight's Kingdom and Space.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think people are probably (incorrectly) using the term steampunk as a catch-all for 'fantasy + technology' but a more accurate term is probably 'castlepunk'. The fantasy era lego sets used this (the dwarf and troll machinery especially) and some elements of warhammer and warcraft use similar concepts.

Nexo Knights says a bit more like space + castle to me, like the 80s cartoon 'Visionnaries' or elements of He-Man. So castle in space, rather than castle with anachronistic tech. Interested to see either really.

By in Canada,

@DanRSL: But Chima WAS a "big bang" theme! And for that matter, so was Atlantis, which lasted an even shorter amount of time. The point of a "big bang" theme isn't necessarily to create something that lasts a long time. Sometimes the LEGO Group gets lucky, as with Ninjago or Friends, and one of their "big bang" themes becomes an actual "evergreen" theme. But usually they don't plan it that way. Even Ninjago was originally only planned for two and a half years. Its lasting success ended up catching the LEGO Group by surprise, and they had to abruptly make plans for new sets and story for 2014.

Chances are that like Ninjago or Legends of Chima, the LEGO Group has a two or three year plan for Nexo Knights. Whether they extend it further depends on how it sells during those first couple years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder if there will be some sort of "power-up" aspect to this theme. To me, the circles in the sword look like slots to be filled with something. I also can't help but notice the negative space on the shield looks like the profile of a screw or spinning top with a 2xN brick on top.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think this theme looks quit interesting. I will be interested to see how it turns out. Although I doubt it will be steam punk, Lego needs to make some official steam punk sets. I would sell my house to get that!

Gravatar
By in United States,

For some reason I'm picturing something like the castle-built pod racer in the LEGO Movie. Chima was a good concept executed poorly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, a kid friendly Lego Warhammer 40K line?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll need to see the sets. My gut is telling me, KK3. But I'm hoping it's going to be more Ninjago like. I really hated the KK2 stuff. Most of it was terrible bad. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about Ninjago that I like, but somehow it works for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This sounds like a Theme I can ignore.
Giving me a chance to buy multiple copies of the wonderful big Ninjago sets already revealed and released.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sounds interesting, but was hoping for the rehash of the Fantasy Era theme... :-\

I'll have to save my opinion until I've seen the photos..

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would enjoy a rehash of fantasy ere too!

According to Wikipedia:

Nexø, sometimes spelled Neksø, is a town on the east coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark. With a population of 3,642 (as of 1 January 2015),[1] it is the second largest town, as well as the largest fishing port on the island. Fishing is the mainstay of the town's economy. Nexø is also the site of a distillery (Bornholmske Spiritfabrik ApS) and a mustard factory (Bornholmersennep ApS). The town is also a port of call for the passenger ferries linking Bornholm with Kolobrzeg, Darlowo, and Ustka in Poland.[2] Dueodde, the largest beach on Bornholm, is located south of Nexø, in the southeastern corner of the island.

One of the buildings could be a Danish Mustard factory! That's a new one for a medieval village!

By in United Kingdom,

I found this yesterday on a forum on Lego.com from a few weeks ago so I thought I would share it here - no idea if it's accurate or not so don't blame me! I was just googling Nexo Knights and seeing what came up. Interesting though, and points the finger at another Chima-like strategy and theme:

There are twelve sets, 6 normal sets and 6 buildable figures (like bionicle)-

Knighton Disc Launchers (70310) – EUR 9.99
Chaos Catapult (70311) – EUR 9.99
Lance’s Robo Horse (70312) – EUR 19.99
Moltor’s Lava Launcher (70313) – EUR 19.99
Clay’s Blade Cruiser (70315) – EUR 39.99
Jestro’s Companions of Darkness (70316) – EUR 49.99

Ultimate Clay (70330) – EUR 9.99
Ultimate Macy (70331) – EUR 9.99
Ultimate Aaron (70332) – EUR 9.99
Ultimate Robin (70333) – EUR 9.99
Ultimate Monster Masher (70334) – EUR 9.99
Ultimate Lavaria (70335) – EUR 9.99

^ Yep, we found those.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@dursagon... Why shouldn't Europe get them first? Lego is Danish after all

@andhe... If they're anything like visionaries that would be quite cool. I used to love that cartoon when I was wee.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

I do wonder if they are dwelling in some sort of tenkai knights sort of universe... That would make amazing minifigs but from the set titles it looks a lot like we're in for a chima/ninjago strategy sort of theme :P
