Ghostbusters Headquarters set for January release?
Posted by Huw,
LEGO fan forums are awash at the moment with rumours that LEGO is set to release a Ghostbusters HQ set early next year. Normally I wouldn't repeat them here but they are strongly corroborated by this URL at shop.LEGO.com that was found by paperballpark and posted in the forum. As you will see when you click on it, it redirects to a page with the words 'Firehouse Headquarters' in its URL.
Traditionally LEGO has unveiled Exclusives set for January release either at Fan Weekend in Denmark next weekend, or BrickCon Seattle the weekend after, so we could get our first glimpse of it soon.
The image shows DrDaveWatford's rendition of the building, of which you can see more on flickr.

Maybe I missed something, but isn't that highly unlikely since they didn't approve the LEGO Ideas project of this very building?
^^ Then again, Lego has had this very weird pattern of shooting down Ideas sets and then releasing something that's identical or noticeably similar. (The helicarrier, the Oz stuff in Dimensions....)
I think the link on LEGO.com pretty much confirms this.
and the fact that ecto 1 is still available
Just the human tendency to see patterns here...but the Winter Village re-release may be hitting the Modular line with a reimagining of the Fire Brigage 10197.
ResIpsaLoquitur: Very true, Lego does do that... I wonder if we're going to see the Jurassic Park gate with tour car and T rex next? That'd be great!
ResIpsaLoquitur: I only knew about the Helicarrier, but I hoped it didn't become a pattern. It seems like a sad case of fans providing all the work and LEGO just harvesting the hive.
pagani88: As much as I would LOVE the Jurassic Park gate (and the T-rex... and the Indominus Rex), I feel like it would be unfair to senteosan.
Not to be the grim one here, but is it not also possible that this will just be a City Fire set?
I've gotta say I feel for those Ideas creations which didn't pass, and to now to see there creations made by Lego with no reward or recognition.. Surely this can't be right!!! Makes Lego Ideas sound like a place where Lego just get Ideas and make these sets themselves.. ????????????????????????????????
@Concreteface: Yeah, it would be unfair, but they've done it before... :)
Two Ideas projects that got to 10K and the review had the GB HQ Brent Waller's project https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36088
And Sergio's
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/60632
For lego to reject the idea of the HQ then release it anyway seems unfair, and sends a mixed message. by failing the review they are stating it's not suitable as a lego product, but then they do it anyway which means it is. If it's true there is a GB HQ set out it means they did want it, just not an ideas set.
That's correct @KLF.
It is interesting considering this particular set is supposedly over 4000 pieces and $350, meaning the large scale version in IDEAS would have been acceptable. Clearly, LEGO has reasoning behind this, even if it is they wanted someone else to do the legwork. But LEGO will never come out and say what their reasoning is.
This could be a hit or miss for me. I'd love a copy of the building and I was working on my own version. Although I was making a Modular scale version and this 4000 piece version will be much larger than that. I didn't bite at the helicarrier because that is too much money. Likely this will be the same, unless I buy no other LEGO for most of the year, which won't happen with all of the other sets I'd want.
My other problem with this is it will be a stand alone set compared to the Ecto-1 release...meaning likely this big set will have another Ecto-1 AND the 4 main figures, plus a few others. So basically I bought the Ecto-1 for no reason. If I could shave off the $50 from the big set, then it might be more palatable. Good business for LEGO, bad for consumers.
@ResIpsaLoquitur: Yeah, that's what happens when they get an ideas submission that's too similar to a product they already have in development. You can't possibly think development for the Helicarrier set started just six months before the set hit shelves, can you? Plus, of course, the Oz stuff in Dimensions (one minifigure and one mini-model with no new molds) is really not much at all like the LEGO Ideas Oz project, (a vignette with five minifigures and two new molds). A license and a single minifigure are the only things they have in common.
@EveryNowAndZen: No, this is likely not in the City theme because of its set number. City sets currently use 60xxx; this set is in the 75xxx range, which is generally licensed themes.
@binaryeye: As that's true, a whole Ghostbusters theme could appear. It's likely, considering the Dimensions packs, so...
I'll post a more in-depth comment tomorrow. I'm off to bed now.
For those that are thinking it is unfair for LEGO to be releasing "similar" sets after rejecting them on Ideas, remember that LEGO already had the IP for those sets long before they were submitted to Ideas. Why wouldn't they have already had something built or at least discussed internally? It's only logical.
Just 7 months ago the Ideas project by Sergio for the Ghostbusters HQ which reached 10K was turned down by LEGO. In theory they already had something in the works considering the ECTO-1 was released in June of '14 while reaching approval status nearly a year before that. This just further solidifies that submitting an Idea of a project with which the licensing already exists, is a waste of time.
EDIT: I would also submit that even though Brent's original Idea had the building, there was some interview he had where he discussed that it was just "too big" for Ideas. I'll see if I can find it..... But again, who is to say that LEGO doesn't have an entire vault of their own projects that they don't yet have the license for? Granted it does suck for the project owners (I especially wanted the Ideas version of the Hellicarrier, not the play model they released), they obviously put in a lot of hard work. Regardless, I can't WAIT to buy this :)
I have to agree that TLG probably had the Ghostbusters HQ as a concept almost as soon as they knew they had the license for the Ecto-1. It would also not surprise me to see a Stay Puft Man from TLG.
Although this is unfortunate for the makers of the Lego Ideas projects, it is purely a situation of "Great Minds thinking alike".
The Ideas projects reaching 10K supporters is really just Market Research for TLG, who now know they have a market for the products they were planning.....
Of course that TLG web page may just be for another City Fire Station ?
Utter nonsense claims about the Helicarrier. That thing got to 10,000 crazy quick. They'd probably wrapped up the final design of their version six months before the MOC was even uploaded to Ideas.
As for the Firehouse, that will suit as a modular building as well as something to be bought as a GB set.
Doesn't Lego design sets at least two years in advance? If so, then how would they know about the Ideas projects if the projects were made after Lego already designed them?
I sympathize with the idea, no pun intended, that some MOC creators are being shorted on credit, but...I think to some extent, that is the risk with Ideas submissions that are based on licenses that LEGO is already producing.
Look at the history of LEGO Ideas. No project that LEGO already had the IP for has been approved. Also, they specifically state in their guidelines here: https://ideas.lego.com/guidelines
"Projects based on current LEGO licenses have an even higher potential for overlap.
We welcome projects based on current licenses like Star Wars, Superheroes, Disney, etc., However, these active licenses are likely to have similar concepts already in the pipeline. Please keep in mind that a project based on an existing LEGO license has a smaller chance of passing the LEGO Review than other projects."
It´s fake
It does not make sense have a Slimmer mold, brand new, for Lego Dimensions and have this horrible R2-D2 Slimmer
interestingly, that hack shows up a lot of other interesting names for other series :) lot of things called "confidential"
@pedrocastro2005: The image is a suggestion of what a Ghostbusters HQ might look like, not the actual set.
@pedrocastro2005: I don't know what you're talking about. There are no pictures of this set whatsoever. Any pictures you've seen associated with this rumor are MOCs and do not reflect whatever the final set might look like. The news article itself states that the linked Flickr gallery is a MOC, not a set.
this good since it was to big of a set for ideas
Well, that would be awesome. I hope that it's detailed and packed with play features.
Is this going to be next year's modular?
@pedrocastro2005: LEGO Ideas sets have the original design and it remains like that until the project is green lighted, it then moves in to the actual design process and lego makes practical and necessary modifications to make it a suitable set for the public. The Slimer you've mentioned would have been changed but it was like this because the builder didn't have access to the figure at the time.
@Sethro3: I'd assume they wouldn't put in the Ecto-1 because its such a large edition to the set and it has been produced already. The reason for it being in the image is because A: It isn't a production image and B: The designer would have added it to complete the model and the Ecto-1 set hadn't been released back when the project was launched. Also keeping the two seperate would be driving the consumers to buy both sets individually, creating a higher profit for LEGO.
Everyone should remember that the image up the top is not the design lego is basing it off, neither is it the final product, it is just an example!
Its clear the Helicarrier was in development at LEGO long before the Ideas project hit 10k.
Same deal with the Frozen castle (which would have been in development or on the drawing board long before the Ideas castle hit 10k)
As for the firehouse, Dimensions packs, Mr Staypuft or any other Ghostbusters projects, all I can say to LEGO is "shut up and take my money" (the exception to that might be the Mr Staypuft Dimensions pack if the Mr Staypuft set shows up, the Slimer dimensions pack if Slimer shows up elsewhere and the Ghostbusters level pack since I am not convinced the minifig is worth paying that much for)
the reason why this lego ideas project was rejected in the first place is most probably because Lego already had the intention of releasing the set with their own design. the approved project is better reserved for something else instead.
I just checked Brent Waller's project, and it says approved!
I'll believe it when I see it.
I hope we get a Ghostbuster HQ. I wondering about the release date, that the HQ is next year modular house ?
At least the last two house has been released in January. But I hope that there is a modular house coming also.
I don't see how some folks can think Lego can be taking ideas from Ideas submissions. The issue I see is the people being 'stolen' from, are merely suggesting A licensed bit of property that the submitter doesn't even own to begin with! The Minecraft and WallE sets make sense, but things like the Helicarrier just seem wrong to me. If you don't own the IP, it seems odd you can suggest it to Lego and get some minor fame/moola out of it.
I'm going with redo of Fire Brigade since the redid Winter Toy Shop.
BlueAnt: That project is just the car.
Ask yourselves; what does this offer as a building experience? It's a boring, derelict building that could be mistaken for any other of it's kind from that era. It's from Ghostbusters, but so what? Is it iconic enough to take the place of another viable Exclusive product?
I would welcome this set as long as it has some nice detail but not too overpriced due to licensing. Any continuation of modular buildings makes me happy but not my wallet.
Well I now noticed the forum link that states $350 USD
OUCH
Yes I see the piece count but at those prices it becomes very hard to justify more than one. 175 for the front half of the building and 175 for the back half. And yeah maybe nice interior but then it's set in stone, I feel.
That's always been the fun of the modulars is buying 2 or 3 and making it bigger yourself or modifying and creating something different. I'm not saying you can't do it. I would just rather for the money have 2 of the same buildings then you have two complete building fronts with all the architectural ornamentation. The fronts of the buildings I love all the ideas of using pieces in new ways. Will have to see.
Great building though, love it.
What if this set is actually for the new reboot movie, and includes the female Ghostbusters and their sort-of-similar car?
Is it just me does on the 'On Shelves' status give us a clue on https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36088
Seems to share that status Wall-E and Big Bang Theory....
Ok guys, playing with the link I found this on French - Swiss one:
http://shop.lego.com/fr-CH/Le-QG-des-Ghostbusters-75827?p=75827&_requestid=805450
Need more proof ?
Given that a third Ghostbusters film is scheduled for 2016 it would be ideal timing to release their headquarters and possibly expand the range.
@Bricklunch Wow, that is indeed a pretty solid clue!
@Taco Bill It's the car. Ecto 1. Check the building instructions.
There is a new mold also for stay puft in dimensions...
Well if this is true it is wondefull news.
I have seen numbers of 4600/4700 pieces. Even if it 'only' 4000 one wonders what will be included. The ecto 1 can be expected, but will be a surprise aswell with the idea's version still available.
I am extremely curious to find out what this set truely will be and what it will inclose.
Thanks BrickSun; I should've looked at that more carefully.
In the recent documentary called "The Secret World of LEGO" or something like that, I think it was mentioned that LEGO is about three years ahead in its conceptual works for its production pipeline. While that cannot be true always, one can certainly see that, even with an 18 month pipeline, they will still be ahead on the work to be done compared to Ideas, where a project has only a year to get some proper support.
It would not surprise me at all if they get some IP ideas and set ideas from the AFOL world of MOCs, but Ideas has too short a timeframe for the general flow of TLG's production cycle.
I believe LEGO also shot down the Sandcrawler before releasing it last year.
With the Sandcrawler, it was different. The proposed model was far beyond the scope of what the actual set covered. (But to be fair, it's likely the LEGO Ghostbusters model won't be as impressive as the Ideas counterparts either.)
I definitely think LEGO took from Ideas on this one. Even if they were planning this 2/3 years ago, TeeKay and BrentWaller had the headquarter models in their projects. Initially, they were even proposing the buildings as part of their prospective Ideas sets. For LEGO, last year's project by Sergio512 only served as confirmation of demand.
Crossing my lems hoping this will come true and that it will look like or similar to DrDaveWatford's rendition of the building.
The Ghost Busters 30th Anniversary project on Lego Ideas says that it's "state" is "on shelves".... hmm.
@mrlegoguy1200. It is on shelves. 21108 was the part that was put into production.
It was stated several times in the comments that the "on shelves" product is Ecto 1. ;-)
The GB HQ may well be the most exciting LEGO release yet. To me, at least. Can't wait to place it next to my Kenner TRG HQ!
Bit gutting as I've already built Sergio's version of this since I was fed up of waiting. Mind you Sergio's does have over 5k pieces so it'll be interesting to see how they do the interior designs. Here's the link to my Facebook album so you can see:

@Huw feel free to remove if not allowed ;)
What really matters is if it comes with a Vigo fig. Without it this set is pointless.
If this is true, it looks to me like the set would be lots of fun!! Having said that, aren't the "modulars" typically released on January 1st?! I wonder what the 2016 modular might be this year... and if LEGO would be concerned in any way that releasing a GB set along with a new modular set might decrease overall demand for one or the other?!
