Photos from Nuremberg are imminent!

Posted by ,

The Nuremberg Toy Fair has just opened and our first look at many of the summer 2016 sets is imminent as photography is permitted at this event, unlike at the London show.

Andres from zusammengebaut.com has kindly given us permission to republish some of the photos he and his colleagues take in the next few hours and we will be doing just that in subsequent articles. At the moment they are in a press conference but have already had a couple of sneak peaks of the Nexo Knights section of the stand.

Meanwhile, I will be talking you through what we are seeing as it is published and discussing any features which might not be apparent in the images, so stay tuned to Brickset and follow zusammengebaut's live feed as more is revealed!

These images are used with permission and must not be republished elsewhere.

UPDATE (14:04): Images are starting to arrive. Take a look after the break...

By in United Kingdom,

Do you know if all the themes will be present? I seem to remember certain licensed themes being absent from Nuremburg last year, or pictures of them being prohibited or something.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Trandoshan - All themes will be present but images will not necessarily be permitted. We will have to wait and see.

Gravatar
By in France,

lol, TLG doesn't make sense, you provided too much details about sets, yet the day after, you can post pictures...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Since the other articles are now gone, just allow me to say thanks again for all the hard work you did over the last few days!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@CapnRex101 you and the team did a great job, too good it seems. Shame on you Lego!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm so excited!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I can't wait! I hope Mixels is there! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a Toy Fair. That means showing things off. At least the pictures come in just after the deleted descriptions. I can't wait to see them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really loved the articles over the last few days, eagerly awaited each one. As a newbie to the community was a blast refreshing and waiting for news. Sad they had to be taken down though.

Looking forward to seeing the stuff from Nuremberg.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Regarding your last paragraph, I'll say again essentially what I said in the forums:

Do Lego seriously turn up at toy fairs, show members of the press (and websites) around, see that they're all carrying notebooks and making detailed notes, and don't say anything, but then complain afterwards in all seriousness that - shock, horror - those reporters who were scribbling lots of notes are actually reporting what was there?

It's ridiculous. What's the point of press days if Lego don't want stuff reported?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

But will Lego/Disney/WarnerBros lawyers return demanding that the pictures be taken down also?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Woah! Just looking at the ticker on the website linked to. That Bucket Wheel Excavator is HUGE! :O

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

NEXO KINGHTS Will be at Nuremberg Toy Fair meet!

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I was expecting the BWE to be large, but WOW.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that large yellow gear in the BWE new? I've never seen that before.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That's an impressive set! If perhaps lacking a little... elegance ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

So disappointed in the Volcano base. I'll be picking up the starter pack, but thats it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

So, the Volcano city sets are up. They look very green indeed :)
And if that's the volcano in the middle there, it is indeed rather pathetic...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

And there is the roller coaster. Not much to roll or coast here... The ferris wheel looks kind of nice, though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The volcano looks more like a large termite mound.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

uh-ho - has the lego community crashed his website?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Did the site crash for anyone else?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Goddamn the BWE, although most likely technically brilliant, is absolutely ugly! I know the subject matter is not exactly the most beautiful of designs to start with, but the sheer amount of gaps, mish-mash of colours and overall design makes me think twice about getting this set.

On the other hand the glimpse of the Volvo box behind the guy and the actual model behind the BWE makes me think this one could be really good. Especially considering its lower price point.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't get a chance to see the coaster before the site crashed - damn it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Worst volcano ever. Looks more like a castle on fire. Perhaps its an editorial of their previous hobbit line.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It seems I need to get into the habit of copy and pasting articles in case LEGO come back a day later and ask you to remove them. Did Brickset have to comply? I assume no copyright was violated since it was a toy fair.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't collect Technic and probably never will... but HOLY WOW THAT BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATOR.

Waiting for Mixels, Ninjago, BIONICLE, and a closer look at Nexo Knights!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

So LEGO doesn't allow photography at the London show and now you can't even be too detailed in writing either?! What's even the point of showing off their wares then? It's 2016, we live in the age of internet, having trade shows "just for the people in attendance" is a thing of the past. No harm comes to them from getting us hyped up about future releases either.

Utterly mind-boggling.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Roller Coaster is so underwhelming. I thought TLG would design a new piece for the coaster track. I wonder if they are aware people would pay big money and buy multiple sets if they did this.

My only hope now is that the SW sets are at least halfway decent.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The Site is going under major 503 errors.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone else take one look at the volcano sets and think Devastator!?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wouldn't be at all surprised if that huge segmented ring gear gets used in a rolling BB-8 model...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

LEGO really asked you to take down your London Toy Fair coverage? Huh. That surprises me a lot. Just seems unusually heavy-handed. This isn't something like their "Force Friday" releases back in September where there was a specific embargo on information about the new sets, after all. It was an event that members of the press were invited to, so I'd have expected reporting to be welcomed. :/

I fully understand the LEGO Group's desire for secrecy, but as a LEGO news reporter for BZPower myself, this concerns me.

Anyway, that bucket wheel excavator looks awesome! I love the United States Capitol Building set from LEGO Architecture as well. The LEGO Friends roller coaster is pretty underwhelming, though. I understand the constraints, but it just... doesn't feel much like a roller coaster to me. :/

The volcano stuff doesn't look bad to me at all, although the volcano is taller and skinnier than I imagined. I kind of expected it to use the 10x6 BURPs in between the new corner BURPs, but instead it uses the 4x6 BURPS which I don't think line up as nicely. The crater does look good, though, and the BURP pieces will be great for making a custom volcano, so it's good to finally get a set that has a lot of them.

Love that the Nexo Knights display booth is shaped like the Fortrex! I can't get over how flashy the displays at Nuremberg Toy Fair tend to be compared to the ones at New York Toy Fair, which are on pretty ordinary shelves without a whole lot of decor.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Having attended with a client, Toy Fair is not for the press. It's a trade show where retailers get to see the 2016 lines and place orders for products they want to carry. Toys R Us and Amazon are among the NYC Toy Fair attendees, along with owners of small toy shops all across the United States and Canada.

Because retailers want to see before they buy, new product is on display. That brings the press, and most manufacturers have accepted that as part of the show, but they are not all comfortable with it. LEGO's booth is by appointment only, and it's one of the few to have a roof, so there's no way to see what's inside unless you have that appointment.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Not too many thrill fans in the Friends Universe it seems. Shame, I was looking forward to the Coaster when it was first announced.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can see why toy companies don't want their products released to the general public prior to toy release date. They don't want the consumer giving the item too much thought prior to release. They want the reviews to come after the product has already sold thousands of copies and let those reviews come in and tear an item down. At least that way they made some money off an item that was going to market rather then it crashing and burning before even hitting the shelves. I don't see why this is the case with LEGO though. LEGO is 100% compatible with ALL other LEGO so whether the set looks good or not can be easily overcome with the parts that come in the set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Actually kinda like the Volcano sets, I honestly feel like the Volcano itself is the big thing that takes away from the rest. The Lime Green color is a neat color we don't get enough parts of in the main series.

Cannot wait for Nexo Knights. Just zooming on the pic shown (http://zusammengebaut.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/02LookInside.jpg) and seeing a few things has me super, super hype.

Site keeps going down from heavy traffic, its not TLG or anything sinister.

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW, that is a lot of lime green :( I won't be picking up the volcano theme :( that doesn't mean I'll be saving any money though, too many other good sets!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I haven't bought a Technic in 10+ years, but that Bucket Loader will change that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The US Capitol Building is a must-buy for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

With the Volcano & Nexo Knights sets, anyone else thing LEGO had a bit of over production on Orange last year Hahaha!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Thanks for the pics! I was really looking forward to pics of the sets =D

The excavator is probably one of the biggest and interesting Technic sets ever released. I am aware that there were several cranes released previously that would probably rival it in terms of size (I'm not sure cos I dont collect/follow Technic), but it is certainly an interesting choice of vehicle. One does not always see excavators like the one represented in the set on the streets everyday =P

I had (very) high hopes for the City volcano line, and its disappointing...In hindsight what I expected was unreleastic (Like chunks of a volcano that would turn out at least twice as high as what we had gotten), but I'm still slightly disappointed. Its too round for my taste. It would certainly be amusing/interesting if Lego goes down this nature surveillance path in future (ie next would be tsunami, earthquake, tornado surveillance).

The US Capitol Building could be summarised in one sentence "Thats one big architecture set!" followed closely by "How much would that thing cost?". Its much much bigger than I expected from an architecture set, and they could have easily gotten rid of the side buildings, but it looks great. The dome is particularly nice, but I'm not that used to seeing headlight bricks mounted on its back...

I'm not surprised to see that Lego is continuing down the theme park line, but I would personally prefer a Creator expert roller coaster (could u just IMAGINE that?? Its going to be great!) than one from a regular lego theme like Friends in this case, which forces designers to use relatively lesser parts. Great to see another use of the firepole piece though =)

In conclusion, great waves, great pics! =D

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Bucket Wheel Excavator, wow!

Gravatar
By in United States,

At first I thought "Wow, that Volcano is waaaay better than reported!"

... Then I looked down, and saw the volcano included in the set. *sigh*

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Don't understand how Brickset had to remove reviews but other sites didn't. Secondly how you are now allowed to post photos if you can't leave up descriptions? Or will these to be removed in due course? Appreciated the reporting and all the work that would have gone into that by all of you. Thanks once again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My exact thoughts as well.

My dislike of the entire theme isn't the actual vehicles or the color or anything. I actually like them.

Its that damn volcano thats just a major turn-off.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Tallblocktoo

Different fair. Nuremberg allows pictures, London doesn't. London is for retailers as opposed to press.

Gravatar
By in United States,

According to their Twitter, the site will be back up soon. More images!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Better save those photos lest they have to take these down too.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not seeing any sets that interest me from the four revealed images so far...

The Volcano at the background looks epic, shame we didn't get that as a set instead of the entire Volcano theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they don't want descriptions of sets at London then they shouldn't invite the press. My guess someone at TLG didn't like the negative reviews of some of the lines and flipped out.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Anyone else thinks that volcano looks like something from Minecraft? :) seems a bit out of place...

Gravatar
By in United States,

The volcano city sets don't look as bad as you described them in my opinion. Obviously they could have been better, but I might still get them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They didn't invite the press. It was a retail event not a press event.

I don't think TLG was trying to censor negative feedback, they knew the sets would hit the internet today and let's be honest, Brickset (or any big Lego fansite) doesn't impact even a sizeable percentage of the buying public's opinion. They're just being over-protective per usual of the "right of first impression."

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Maxximus thats exactly what I thought lol. Devastator looking for energon!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Can't wait to see the new Nexo Knights sets!!! I need more villains!

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO has no reason to worry. Most consumers of LEGO are casual buyers who don't know about the products until they hit shelves. A negative comment or two and detail from a Toy Fair won't damage sales much, in fact, it usually encourages them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh, that Capitol building is gorgeous!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

If LEGO didn't "invite the press" then why did Brickset get access? If they don't want anything leaking out (never mind that two days later at another fair photographs can be freely taken) then they shouldn't extend an invitation to a LEGO news site, which essentially IS press. What's the point of LEGO inviting Brickset if they aren't allowed to report on it?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've seen the Porsche! I'm in love!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

From looking at @zusammengebaut on Twitter feed, the spiderman bridge is cool..

@capnrex101 I see what you meant now by it would be even better with two sets, to make a full length bridge....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Do we know what functions 42055 Bucket Wheel Excavator has? I mean it looks amazing, but it's technic, so without some decent functions it's useless.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@tchrin, there are several levers on the back of the counterbalance, and on the base. looks like the tracks will move, the table will turn, they already mentioned that the bucket wheel turns, and the angle of the arm can change. so it's safe to assume at this point that all of those things function. and if correct means there really isn't anything this beast needs outside of some color changes on a few parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anything about Nexo Knights or Ninjago? I can't wait to see what they look like! Especially Aaron Fox (He's my favorite Nexo Knight) and Flama

Gravatar
By in United States,

Curious if that excavator could actually move some dirt.
Anyone ever try to use technic sets for real world use?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well there we go, based on that twitter image, I think Scarlet Spider is Ben Reilly, and Spider-Girl looks like the Ultimate version of Jessica Drew.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Boy after reading the London reviews on the City sets and the recap of the best/worst themes, I thought it coulndn't be that bad, but it is. These are completely boring

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmm - I already have that huge helicopter!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, I guess I'm just a glass-is-half-full kind of guy. The roller coaster is good. The size is great for play without taking up too much space. I know my kids and I will enjoy it. I guess I'm lucky though that I had convinced myself that it would be for animals. I'm glad it's for Minidolls.

I don't think the volcano is all that bad either.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, I'll at least take a Volcano Starter Set. I'm loving these "3-4 Minifigures, a Vehicle, and Some Accessories" sets.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

What's happened with your notes from London Fair?

Gravatar
By in United States,

So... Where are the Star Wars photos?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Scorpion's little buggy is rather lame. Let us be honest. One tiny bit of lame in a lovely set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I actually really like the designs of the smaller vehicles in the volcano theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Its a shame Lego went that route with the roller coaster

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i love the look of the lego friends rollercoaster now we just need to get a creator roller coaster to add to the mixer and ferris wheel

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Azure Roller-coaster looks like a friendified version of something that could have been great :(
TLG could sell huge numbers of roller-coaster sets to us, with track made from one of 3.2mm tubes or Technic 1M & 2M tubes and pins or corrugated tubing but they come out with that. A serious error of commercial judgement IMHO, as was the lack of a flat straight piece in the 4-wide track. I know we're not the core market but they have made too many pieces in pastel shades and failed to recognise another market that exists. Hope the Friends core market enjoy it!

The US Capitol Building looks very nice. I often have a quandary with these sets of whether I would ever take one apart.

The flagship Volcano set will be a good source of the new MURP. At least 4, perhaps 8 of them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the coaster's fine. The azure tracks aren't too far off from the colored coaster tracks in real amusement parks, and it'll fit in nicely with Jokerland!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Some of the volcano vehicles would be good for a dino-type display.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I need every one of those volcano sets!

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

@ willobee498 please take them all

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks like the Hazmat Guy is appearing in silver in the large volcano set. Some kind of fire resistant or asbestos suit no doubt. I'll have to get a few of him somehow. Some of the other minifigs in this range look interesting too.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like that the volcano sets are part of the City line. It's a masterpiece of urban planning to build a city around an active volcano

Edinburgh is built on a volcano but I think they checked it was extinct first...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, from what I can see, the volcano line is an historic disappointment to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

i can't wait for the bridge duel and the Ghost Rider set! all the sets look fine but the Volcano theme seems like Lego is running out of ideas and put ideas in a hat and just drew for m it.
really hope to see images of the Civil war set and praying that Spider Man comes with it.
hoping the Star wars Encounter on Jakku really fits with Rey's speeder and hoping that it comes with a stormtrooper(s) with backpacks or some of the aliens in the scenes for the Mos Eisley Cantina

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

All the volcano series needs is a volcano. What would have been cool (hot) would be a cutaway volcano built in the same way as a typical Lego building- with a missing wall like a dolls house. It could have chambers and hidden features inside so the volcano people can actually go inside, investigate and do whatever sciencey mining type business they are up to.

@Rex501 the Microfighter FO snow speeder comes with 2 stormtrooper backpacks (with printed tile) by the way, so at least one spare.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Maybe that is the very large sized set like 60062 and 60096 were, exclusive to TRU or Target.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Fun at the park it's an exceptional filler, the gas station is good but the veichles are boring, love the hangar with his biplane and the whole airport theme will let you forget the volcano lime extravaganza....except for that chubby green cargo that seems to come from junior line!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Hoth Bricks has pictures of the Marvel Super Heroes suspension bridge. It's not at all how I imagined it but still huge and awesome.

EDIT: They actually have pictures of most (all?) of the super hero sets. Killer Croc looks amazing... way better than the model in the Lego Batman video game.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't think that Volcano helicopter looks that bad. "Rescue green" isn't my favorite, but it's not horrible.

Really, we now know that Lego City is a place that's surrounded by tundra, forest, ocean, and now a volcano. It's likely somewhere between Seattle and Alaska.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oooh...! I'm lovin' that LEGO volcano!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

If that roller coaster and Ferris wheel is all for the one friends set, then I think it looks like an amazing set at that price point. Don't forget that us AFOL's are not the target demographic for Friends sets and after the success of the Creator Ferris wheel etc then a Creator roller coaster will probably be made in due course to satisfy AFOL desires. My kids will be all over this set and I see it having heaps of play value for them. So I am really thrilled about this set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The volcano sets really aren't as terrible as you guys made them out to be. Boring, sure, but not awful.

That roller coaster on the other hand... ouch.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Slightly disappointed by the volcano sets, though I'm not sure what I was hoping for exactly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lots of good stuff, here. I LOVE the Nexo Knights crossbow plane and all of the Technic sets, will definitely get dat pneumatic excavator. City... Fun at the Park is the only one I want. Maybe the little Volcano tracked vehicle. Creator looks terrific, Bionicle doesn't have good enough pics to judge, and the roller coaster is just a big pile of fail.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think that people are being overly negative of the Friends Rollercoaster / Funfair set. I totally agree that it's not up to much compared to the Creator Funfair sets, but I can see my young daughters loving this set, as it looks like it has a lot of play value. It's Friends, after all!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wait, if Lego's booth is by appointment only, then what did they think you were there for? Certainly your entrance had to be approved and since you're not a retailer, it should have either been rejected or they should live with their decision.

I know Lego is aimed at children, but times like these it feels like it's run by children, too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The fact that there are, oh, I don't know, ACTIVE VOLCANOS RIGHT OUTSIDE LEGO CITY is of concern to me.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The volcano sets don't look nearly as bad as I thought they would. They're just a bunch of bigger-than-usual all-terrain vehicles (with a helicopter thrown in for good measure), which is just about every City subtheme these days. I quite like the lime green, too. I'm not gonna buy any (because, like every City subtheme these days, I think they're pretty boring), but they're not terrible. What does bother me about them are (a) yeah, that actual volcano is the size of somebody's garage, and (b) yet another "there's energy crystals inside those boulders that we need to collect!" storyline? Hasn't Lego done that, like, twenty times by now?

Also, I was really underwhelmed by the Spider-Man bridge set. I wasn't impressed at all by the photos of that one, maybe it doesn't photograph well?

As for the conduct of Lego themselves, of late ... I get wanting to protect your unreleased products from criticism ... but if you invite reporters to your show, and you're happy to have them walking around with pen and paper, making notes and (you know) doing their job, then no, you don't have the right to complain about it afterwards. It's heavy-handed and kind of juvenile. Grow up, TLC.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah totally agree with you Zordboy. Anyway.......yes when I looked at that massive volcano MOC in the background, for one glorious second I thought it would be the actual thing and that that range would look cool.......until I looked down and saw the baby brother. LOL.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Airport range will hopefully be better.......

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@ResIspaLoquitur

"Really, we now know that Lego City is a place that's surrounded by tundra, forest, ocean, and now a volcano. It's likely somewhere between Seattle and Alaska."

Somewhere between Seattle and Alaska - That would have to be Vancouver, BC! Surrounded by forests and oceans, alpine tundra and glaciers and yes volcanoes of all sorts, Active (like Mt Baker), Dormant (like Little Mountain - entirely within Vancouver City limits), and long since extinct (like "the lions"). Now we just need sets of Vancouver more sinister side. A "Hastings and Main" set would come complete with hypodermic needles and lots of junkie minifigures, while a "Surrey Central Station" set could feature old ladies getting robbed while waiting for the train and lots of gangs :p
