First batch of box images
Posted by Huw,
Pictures of the actual models taken at the German toy fair are great but often it's hard to see exactly what's included in each set. Pictures of boxes do a much better job of conveying that information, so I am grateful to Andres at zusammengebaut.com for taking photos of as many as he could while there.
He has graciously allowed us to add them to the database here and the first batch are now available for your viewing pleasure:
- City Volcano Explorers
- City Airport
- 60132 Gas Station
- 60134 Fun at the Park
- Creator
- Architecture
- Nexo Knights
We will be adding more as Andres sends them through so check back often!
I have to say, the Volcano Explorers sets look much better in these images than they did in the shoddy display at the London Toy Fair. You may recall that none of us that went to London were impressed with them, but seeing them at their best in the box art images, I for one have changed my mind. They do look pretty cool although I'm still not convinced by the volcano...

Thanks Andres and thanks Huw!
Edit: I'm really loving Fun at the Park. Interesting to see a merry go round in the park set. Here at least they have long been removed from parks due to safety concerns. Good memories. The City Airport sub theme looks to be pretty cool. Would love to own most of them but will likely settle for one or maybe two at the most. I especially like the one with the show planes and hanger. The Gas station has a street sweeper which I had missed up till now!
15 Minifigs in 60134, I never buy City but I might make an exception.....depending on the price. Which HOPEFULLY will be a nice $40 or maybe even $35. But it will probably be more like $60
Glad to see it all added!
I LOVE the volcano sets! Don't hate me, but I am fond of the volcano in the big set.
That Volcano is extremely pitiful. Not a big fan myself!
Inside LEGO:
"Hey designers - take the Arctic theme, make it green, change the ice to rocks/lava, make everything a bit smaller, then push it out the door."
"Great work guys!"
Thanks Brickset.
The "volcano" isn't too bad given the size constraints--about twice as many of the mega-rock pieces might produce a more convincing model. OTOH maybe it's meant to be a museum display? That could be kind of amusing....
I love Fun at the Park. Great pieces, and nice amount of minifigs. I'm nervous about the price ... ha ha ha. The Gas Station reminds me of a set from the 80s my brother owned. Ah, the memories.
I am still not convinced by the Volcano Explorers subtheme as a whole. The smaller sets look decent but most sets offer little innovation in relation to earlier subthemes in my opinion.
However, 60121 Volcano Research Truck contains some great pieces and I will certainly be purchasing that set. It looks like a new fender element is fitted to the front and there is also a new clip used to fit the bracing in front of the windscreen.
The rest of the summer City range looks superb. I love 60132 Gas Station and 60134 Fun at the Park while the Airport subtheme also includes some interesting models which I will certainly aim to acquire.
I'm more worried that there's an active volcano within eye-sight of Lego City. Up until now, I thought the overbearing police force was that town's worst problem, but we know what heat does to plastic, right? ;)
@Dalek135 @LuvLegos_Cool_J: Don't worry, Fun at the Park is £35 according to the database, so presumably $40-45. Not too bad.
I like the look of those Volcano sets, but then again, I do like the colour green a lot...
As somebody else said when we saw the first pics, the vehicle in the big set looks like it would be great for a Dino style layout.
Thanks to zusammengebaut.com! I like most of the Volcano Explorers sets but the Starter Set is quite disappointing which is a shame as I like buying the City Starter Sets usually.
@dougts: If you think these look like a repeat of the Arctic stuff I don't think you paid very good attention to either. There is just as about as much in common between this and last year's Demolition sets as between this and the Arctic sets, and even then 60120, 60124, and the helicopter from 60123 don't really resemble the sets from either of those subthemes (the Arctic helicopter was a Sikorsky Skycrane, which this new helicopter obviously isn't).
Not sure what your comment about "smaller" is either, because the few vehicles that DO resemble Arctic ones (60121 and 60122) seem unmistakably LARGER than their Arctic counterparts.
Not sure why so many people are complaining about the size of the volcano either, since it's bigger than the vast majority of LEGO mountains from previous sets (22 studs by 22 studs at its base and 13 bricks tall at its peak). Plus it's finished on all sides, which can't be said for most LEGO mountains. What were you all honestly expecting?
The Volcano Base set - if any set could benefit from a raised baseplate, I think this would be the winner. In the box picture. They kind of prop it up to seem more substantial than it is.
Fun at the Park set - how do they fix the goalkeeper at that angle. Is there a trans slope?
I've never been that much into City but I think the volcano explorers are exceptionally underwhelming. The highlight of the series appears to be the boxes...
Thanks for the pictures!
Some nice Sets. Gas Station looks nice but it is really not good that there is no baseplate/streetplate!!
Fun at the Park a really good Set for every City. (Only the price is a little bit high!)
Hmm, I'm quite tempted by some of the Volcano Explorer sets - there are some good, solid-looking vehicles. That helicopter is particularly nice, and the drone that comes with the base set is a good touch.
Any thoughts on the price of Fun in the Park? I'd love to get it, but that many minifigs may make it ridiculous.
I'd be amiss if I didn't comment on how exciting the Gas Station set is. Not just because of the quality of the design, but also because it's a 2-in-1 set and that's a first for LEGO City!
Regarding the volcano size, I think it's a good balance of size, functionality, and not being a mind numbingly dull build. A ten year old me would make a big pile of blankets on my bed, plop the volcano on top, and the floor would be the mountains base. But hey, who needs imagination, right?
Disappointed in the Volcano Explorers (or is that Arctic Explorers with the colours inverted?) was really looking forward to those sets .. @droughts was spot on .. What's happening at LEGO; first it was the Winter Toy Shop, now this. I'd rather they released less sets but were more original or expanded themes - Pirates is a good example .. Last 6 months and went - apart from the ship there was no "complete" play set .. Something more solid like a Knights castle etc. or maybe even a series of sets that slot together to form a bigger one would have been very cool.
I am concerned about the fact that the new gas station is getting built right around the time volcanos start erupting..!
I can't wait to get the fun at the park set. ive been waiting for a small lego city set like that
SOOOOO dissappointed in 60101 and 60104 airport sets.
They look like DUPLO sets with those huge pieces. Theres hardly anything left to build.
Even though they look smoother, it just looks wrong having that super pointy/smooth nose and then regular bricks around it. They should at best be billed as "Juniors" sets.. The blue plane is so smooth and round it doesn't even look like a lego, and looks like its comprised of under 30 pieces.
On the other hand, the gas station set is a must buy.
@Aanchir: The 2005-2006 city sets (not all of them) showed ideas for different builds, though this is 99.99% certain this will be with instructions! I expect the thick-bound type of book here (like the Frozen Fever set).
I was so excited to see the volcano sets, and am profoundly disappointed. They just don't capture the aspects of the subject that capture my imagination.
I've got a ton of trans-orange cheese slopes from the PAB wall. I think I have enough to make my own active volcano.
Missing Brick's ridiculous comment made me realize, ignoring the sexless baby, there's an equal split of seven per side, male and female! Fantastic.
I usually don't collect City... but BABY. STROLLER. WHEELCHAIR. TONS OF MINIFIGS. I'M IN LOVE.
Love the Park! Like the Gas Station! Don't mind the airport subtheme. Don't care for the volcano subtheme at all.
Am I the only one who feels £35 for the park set is overpriced?
£35 for less than 200 pieces...! And it's not even a star wars film set.
I'm hoping that is a mistake and that is the price in HK$
The gas station should of included a baseplate at the very least. . .how annoying.
Are those new canopies in the air show sets? That's always exciting for me.
Volcano Explorer sets I will get...Starter Set, Research Truck, Crawler Vehicle and Research Base! I LOVE them!
Interesting what everyone else has referred to as a merry go round in the Park set is what I always referred to as a roundabout when I was a kid.
I'm interested to see the CITY Passenger Terminal set, particularly as I want to compare it to the Heartlake Airport set released last year. The plane in the CITY set doesn't look like the top came come off so you can see the inside like you could with the Friends set. But looks like there are other details in the CITY Terminal than there wasn't in Friends.
Having just got back into LEGO very recently the volcano sets look very appealing to me. I missed the whole arctic explorer series so this one will fill the void! I like the accessories on the mini figures very much.
I'm mostly interested in the Airshow (60103) and the 3 smaller vehicles in the Volcano Explorers theme (60120, 60121 and 60122). Maybe I'll buy the Volcano Research Base (60124), but that's mostly because of the vehicles. NOT because of the poorly executed volcano. Maybe I'll buy Fun At The Park (60134) multiple times, just because of the awesomeness of this set.
@MeganL the top of the plane surely comes off, no other way to put figs in seats.
Missing Brick is a rascal, just like an actual missing brick :P
I like the volcano explorers figures a lot. The extreme heat suit guy is pretty cool. I love that series 4 hazmat topper. I like the molten side split boulder, because it's got a cool texture, it's two identical sides I presume? And mostly because it's not the chima band-loaded one. A truly awful part.
Also while being glad for things not being other things, I am glad no dodos are gonna think this batch of wholesome research sets is about big oil.
And more comment: while I resent "everything is awesome" being the go to Lego reference now - a purposefully contrived pop song does not define this timeless product now - I am super okay with president business being linked to octan. So, I may well pose him with this gas station.
The cargo airplane is kind of nice but it can't hold candle to the lumber convertiplane, sigh. I like the biplane and the hangar, and the follow-me car is a cute touch.
3wbricks: quite similar plane was the base of 60022-1: Cargo Terminal set, which comprised of 658 parts. I would guess that about 500 went to the airplane.
For those wanting to expand their airport, there's also the Marvel Captain America set. Bigger control tower, luggage truck, sell the figures and you'd be quids in.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for the Volcano sets, but my six year old son is totally in love with it. He already see's loads of playability in it, and its all on his must-have list.
I love the Fun at the Park set, however I miss some large brick-built trees (like the one in 10193 Medieval Market Village).
I also love the Gas Station, but I miss a baseplate, too.
Speaking of baseplates... doesn't the Airport set include a runway?!? That would be a pretty fundamental part of the set for me.
The park is a definite. I really like the mid-size vehicles in the volcano range. The colors and black bars just really work for me.
I'm not as in love with the gas station, but I will have to get the street cleaner somehow.
The airport subline is meh apart from the air show set which will be pricey. I really only want the hangar and biplane from that too...not sure if that is worth a purchase.
I really don't care for the Creator RV, but those two alternate builds are sublime!
I need to get that RV. And some of that airport stuff looks like fun as well. And then there is the park set!
I still don't like the volcano sets. The trans orange 'lava' pieces look interesting and you probably can't have enough tracked vehicles. But I really don't like the color scheme and to me they don't look particularly interesting. But then I'm not 8 or 10 years old anymore...
Not a city collector, but I wouldn't mind a closer look at the Airshow.
Definitely getting the park set, love it. I know it's been said many times about the lack of included baseplates, but also the low choice of separate baseplates to buy is frustrating as most won't suit these sets. The only option is to get older second hand plates for airports and gas stations etc. We need to start a campaign, bring back baseplates :)
This is probably old news, as it seems they appeared in a few sets as early as 2013, but I've just noticed the metal detectors in the volcano sets no longer have studs on the search head. I wonder why they were removed? it just seems to decrease functionality and make me sad.
I think the actual builds for the Volcano Explorers sets look terrific, it's just a shame they picked lime green as the primary colour of them. Had they been just about any other colour the whole theme would've been so much more desirable (personally speaking).
I'm pleased to see a petrol station back in the CITY range but where is the base plate? Please Lego give the CITY sets back their baseplates. What happened to the 'SYSTEM' of play?
@asthma: £35 for Fun at the Park is actually a really good deal. Collectable Minifigures cost £2.99, and it would cost £42 to get 14 of them, so considering fun at the park also has a bunch of new molds and sub assemblies, it's actually an amazing deal.
How reliable are the prices? £50 for the RV seems a lot.
Volcano looks way better than it did before. Loving the small crawler truck.
Airport... big pile of meh.
Fun at the Park and Gas Station look fantastic, but I have to ask: Why a B-Model?!
Architecture box shots don't do much for me.
Nexo Knights... yeesh. I kind of like the crossbow, but the other two sets are really ugly.
There are photos of the star wars sets floating around somewhere I think as well.
I will definitely need to pick up Fun at the Park! So many minifigs and new pieces!
I do find it a little disappointing that baseplates aren't included in the park and petrol station sets. I would gladly pay a little more for those sets if they included baseplates. VIP service and cargo plane are must haves! The limo with the sporty wheels looks great, as does the mini military style super tough cargo plane.
PicnicBasketSam: What's wrong with a B-model? It doesn't bump up the price, so why not include it?
Hmm. So the Ash Attackers, Flamethrowers, and Crust Smashers ARE generic soldiers.
Jestro's Volcano Lair looks super awesome. And expensive, probably. Going to have to save a bit for that one, but it's a must have. I'm not in love with a lot of the new Nexo Knights sets but that one and Axl's Tower Carrier look pretty fantastic. General Magmar's Siege Machine of Doom has potential too, and I kinda already want it since it comes with Clay's robo horse.
Saw the Treehouse here in the U.S. at our local TRU already.
And Fun in the Park... indeed. Great city builder set.
Definitely getting the Volcano Explorers set! I've been missing the Power Miners for a while now and these make for a nice complement to that series. Plus, my sister studying to be a geologist and she'll go NUTS for these!
I might buy my gran it.
@Maxximus Not possible, maybe you saw 31010?
^Very likely 31010, as that just retired recently.
"General Magmar"
I smell a lawsuit by Nintendo.
Lots of great sets here. Overall, the City sets might be at the top of my list. Fun at the Park and the Gas Station are great of course but I also like the airport theme since I don't actually own any airport related sets. I am also excited for the Volcano subtheme. Personally I like the color scheme and, while of course a bigger volcano would have been great, I understand why the one in the Research Base is the size it is. Definitely a must get for me. Better start saving now!
I'd love to see the box art for the Creator lighthouse set, I'm curious what the alternate builds look like.
This "Volcano Explorers" subtheme is very underwhelming. The colour scheme is reminiscent of Power Miners, and the boxes are too detailed. They take the attention away from the sets themselves.
Fun in the Park reminds me of 8401 City Minifigure Collection. I really like this set.
The VIP Plane is also reminiscent of 3222 Helicopter and Limousine, but I really like the private jet over the helicopter. The security emblems printed(?) on the tail of the plane are very nice, gives it some more usability over the general cargo or Lufthansa planes.
A couple 60120 Starter Sets and the 60121 Truck would make a good Hazmat/Mountain Rescue MOC for my fire department (along with 60111 Fire Utility Truck), but I'll pass on the rest of the Volcano Sets. Hopefully the vehicle emblems are stickers and not painted on. Although I agree that the drone from the Research Base is a nice touch.
The gas station is a must buy too. As for the rest of the 2016 lineup so far, lets just say my bank account is safe.
Just noticed the elderly woman on the bench with the flowers....
Mrs Doubtfire :-)
