Review: Series 17 costumed characters
Posted by Huw,
Rather than overwhelm you with a single review of all 16 figures I'll trickle them out over the next few days, starting with the three costumed characters.
The costumed characters are among the most attractive, desirable and, therefore, sought-after figures in the CMF series so perhaps that's why series 17 includes two 'full-body' costumes, and a girl in dressing-up attire.
Corn Cob Guy
The dressed-up-as-food theme started by the hot dog guy in series 13 and banana guy in series 16 continues with this delightful corn cob.
Once again the costume fits snugly around the figure's head and body leaving just the face exposed. The back of the outfit consists of a couple of leaves/husk with the kernel poking out the top.
Underneath the figure has a plan green torso, itself uncommon and potentially useful.
Rocket boy
This figure is off to a schoolfriend's party dressed as a rocket, made of cardboard and tape no doubt, complete with a flag decorated with a classic space logo drawn in crayons.
The rocket itself has some nice details such as the printed rivets (I presume) on the front and back.
Best of all, his torso is printed with a classic space logo, something that's sure to excite fans no end as it's the first time it's appeared on a grey one.
Butterfly girl
This little girl figure is so colourful and beautiful! She has a butterfly print on her top, printed hair and feet and carries one of the new three-pronged flower stalks which I believe is new here in lime green.
The butterfly wings at the back are attractively decorated.
It's so bright and colouful and I think it's one of my favourites of the series!
Next I'll take a look at figures with foodstuffs.
Thanks to LEGO for providing the figures to review. The review is an expression of my own opinions.

these guys will be trick-or-treating around the Modulars this autumn!
Because it's useless and random. However for $4 the combine should also have a print. However as Huw said that green torso is very uncommon and a first without a print.
Brilliant! I want all 3 of them. Thanks for the review!
I thought that Rascus from KK2 had a plain green torso as well, but that was 10 years ago.
Love they grey classic space torso. The Neo Classic Space fans are going to go nuts with this!
Neat review and I hope to see variations of these figures mixed in regular sets being sold (like the minifigures pack).
So apparently LEGO aren't even allowing (supplied) reviewers to show off the mystery figure, according to Brothers Brick. Way to take it too far, LEGO. I was mildly intrigued by the secrecy at first but now it's genuinely starting to piss me off. Will definitely share my thoughts about it at the next customer survey.
As figures in general, I think they look nice, but as part of the "costume" sub-series, I think they leave a lot to be desired.
The corn is just another part of the downward trend of food costumes (Hot Dog is clearly the most successful and Banana or Corn are nowhere near as good). The Rocket suit is really out of left field as it doesn't fit in with any of the previous costumes in terms of theme (Is he going to a party? A science fair?), and I suspect Lego just threw in that Classic Space torso to entice people to buy a bunch of what is a very limited figure otherwise. Butterfly girl? Not costumed enough in my opinion actually. More of a Halloween costume than a desired parade costume--although the wings are indeed spectacular.
All in all these are just "meh" for me.
While I wasn't interested much in this series, the review is making me feel different now. The corn cob guy looks cute, and now I'm considering getting it. I don't know why, but for some reason, I want it.
The rocket boy was going to be a pass for me, but I want that recolored classic space torso. There's no need for me to have the torso, but, being born over 15 years after classic space ended, I feel the need to collect some of the torsos. The fairy girl doesn't impress me at all, so I'll pass on it.
I REALLY want to see the mystery figure. The suspense is killing me! I need to see what's so special about the figure. It better be good, considering it's been kept secret this whole time.
Is the ball on top of the rocket compatible with mixels ball joint pieces? Could make for some interesting retro rocketship MOCs if so.
Awesome minifigs! Love the fairy wings and the classic space torso.
I think all three are great!
Quite a few folks come off as increasingly bitter about offerings. While it's always good to critique and express your views (positive and negative!) these are at the end of the day just little toys and need not be taken too seriously.
These look great. I was really torn at first, but the more I look at this series, the more I want most of them, which isn't good due to the price. I guess that is what LEGO wants.
My daughter will flip for the butterfly girl, so I'll need 2 of her. She will definitely want the other female characters too.
The corn cob guy is much needed being a native Nebraskan. Maybe it's time I work on a Memorial Stadium MOC. Either way, I can find a lot of uses for hot dog and banana, so I'll find a use for the cob guy. Maybe at a fair?
And the rocket is really neat. The torso is much needed for fans, even if I don't build in classic space style, I'll still take one. But I can see those flying off the shelves.
Ohhhhhh, I think Fairy Bricks will need to update their sigfig wings...
...but a Grey Classic Space Minifigure is already real... (sort of)

Guess it will be really real now.
I can finally get a deserving pilot for my classic space x-wing! Plus, the rest rocket guy will be by far the easiest one to identify
Unfortunately, there's no class space airtanks or old-style helmet in light bluish gray, and only one minifig with the new-style space helmet in LBG - that would be the Heroic Knight from CMF Series 9. So we still can't quite make a true classic space minifig in gray yet.
I still don't know why this series is getting so much hate.
I NEED Corn Cob Guy and Rocket boy
Ack, the reviews that are starting to come out are convincing me that I will be buying more of this series than I initially thought...
I absolutely love Rocket Boy and as spacer myself I'm super excited about that torso, but it does sort of have the look like it was drawn on by the little boy himself. Doesn't exactly look clean, crisp and metallic like the real thing. Little disappointing, but still classic space and gray, I'll take! Hell I'll take 30!
I have a 4 yr old daughter, how can I not get the butterfly girl?! She's gonna love it!
I would buy a whole display of them and keep two sets and sell the rest. Would surely be a good deal, but how on earth can one get a display? I've tried with the DFB series, no way to get them as a non-dealer customer. Unfortunate really.
I liked banana suit guy better.
"Unfortunately, there's no class space airtanks or old-style helmet in light bluish gray"
I thought the classic firemen had the odd grey airtank?
Two of them: the gladiator and the princess... maybe the battledwarf too.
The rocket ship mold is amazing.
@Sethro3
Yes, the corn is great for Nebraskans (like me)!
They look delightful. Definitely want them now I've seen closer images of them.
Corncob guy is such not needed figure. Lego has no corncobs item! I would rather get Cow/puppy/pizza costume
For the first time in multiple series, I think I will have to pick up all the figures in this one again. Best series in years!!!
The Corn Cob Man, Rocket Boy, Butterfly Girl, Veterinarian, and chef are a definite yes
Little fairy girl is super cute and corn man is adorable too, I missed out on banana man and hotdog costume guy lol... so I gotta have corn on the cob man..
