Doctor Who projects now OK for Cuusoo
Posted by Huw,
Having purged all Doctor Who based projects from Cuusoo some months ago due to licensing conflicts, yesterday the Cuusoo team posted on their blog that "we now welcome projects based on the following licenses that used to have conflicts: Doctor Who".
That's obviously excellent news for all Whovian AFOLs out there, of which there are many. I guess we can read into the announcement that Character Building no longer has the license, and certainly looking at their website, they don't appear to be selling many DW products now.
So, what Doctor Who based set would you most like to see? Maybe a minfig-scale Tardis with the Doctor and his companion? An interior of the Tardis playset? Something else?
The race is now on to reach 10,000 supporters. I wonder how long it will take for the first project to do so?
Thanks to Michael at ORTCo for the news.

Jon Pertwee and his car, Bessie, please, somebody!
/has no truck with post Tom Baker Dr Who
That's good news! A Tardis in minfig scale is a must have! But which Doctor to choose? I would hope for Tennant in his blue pin striped suit with maroon cons ;o) and Martha Jones for sure. There would be so many sets to make...
I submitted a minifig scale tardis with interior... but, apparently, bending the laws of Time and Space to make it bigger on the inside. was an illegal building technique :oD
If Dr Who was to become a licensed Lego set...oh my goodness! I was so underwhelmed by the Character Building sets and "quality".
why not a minifig scale tardis with the current doctor and companion and then a cmf series of the other doctors plus companions and / or villains?
and a ucs K9 :D wishfulthinking
Wish this could have happened with the Jurassic Park and the Space marines sets, oh well, there are more projects out there.
Well that explains why we never got a 4th set of Character BuildingB DW figs. Surely only a matter of time, now. I am hoping that the reason Character Options no longer have the licence is that TLG finally put some decent money on the table and outbid them.
I see two things coming out of this: One - we'll learn the minimum time it actually takes for a project to go from idea to store via CUUSOO. Two - multiple CUUSOO projects coming out at the same time under the same theme.
LOL. essentially, we're designing their next line ;)
Um. Doctor Who Collectable 'Figs. Nuff said.
Well I will somewhat miss doctor who character building I liked them and put a lot of money into them but lego doctor who would be 1000 times better.
It would be cool to have a regular sized TARDIS that attached to a much bigger room, so the minifigs could walk through. If there's a chance they'll only do one set, that would be the iconic setting...but what minifigs would be best? Perhaps they could release it with the current Doctor and companion but do a collectible minifig line alongside - kind of like they are doing with The Simpsons - to incorporate all the Doctors and some of the more memorable companions and baddies?
Remember that just because they're now accepting submissions for Dr. Who doesn't mean that they'll actually produce a set. They still have to get the license themselves and also see if it makes sense financially.
As much as I'd love a Who CMF, I can't see it having broad enough appeal for LEGO to go all in like that. But I fully expect to see a TARDIS soon. The CB TARDIS wasn't bad, actually, and the Daleks were pretty nice too.
My hunch: the 50th anniversary buzz means they've finally woken up to the popularity of the series. They're in licence negotiations now with the view to creating a theme. But that means any Cuusoo submissions will receive the thumbs down because of this.
Really? I was the scoop on this one? I'll take it anyway ;p
When we run a stall at conventions, the 1 product we get asked about is Doctor Who LEGO, so this really sounds like a no-brainer for TLG. I would look forward to anything with the DW licence attached!
Please! Lego Doctor Who would be great. I want the pandorica opens
This is a childhood dream come true: what set to do though? A CMF series would be terrific but quite unlikely unless the BBC and Lego have a partnership coming up (Lego Top Gear rumours though!?). The obvious idea is the Tardis, which one: the current one (although many of us would love to see the classic console room). Minifigures: Capaldi's and Smith's Doctor, Clara and just because we may only get this one set: a monster. Considering the approval time and the development, this set could launch to co-inside with the eighth series that begins this autumn!
Not a fan, but I have some friends who would love this!
This has been pretty much my LEGO dream since we got Lego Lord of the Rings, so I'm very excited!
I'd only buy a TARDIS if it really was bigger on the inside.
I am not convinced by LEGO Doctor Who personally. I am not really a fan of the show, and think it falls into a similar category to that of the Simpsons. Both are shows which are past their best, and I would argue that the Simpsons is probably the more popular of the two worldwide.
No doubt that LEGO Doctor Who would be a winner in the UK, but I am not so sure that it would be at all popular in the US or elsewhere.
I would still like to see some LEGO Daleks though so I would not be adverse to Doctor Who sets, I am just not convinced by the concept.
Doctor Who has gotten quite popular in the U.S. the last few years. It is among the higher rated programs on cable television here now. Also, it is very kid friendly unlike a lot of the themes we've seen lately, most notably The Simpsons.
While I would agree with you that the show is past its prime (I haven't cared for the current season at all), its popularity is actually on an upswing in the U.S. The same can't be said about The Simpsons, which saw its peak popularity here in the '90's.
CapnRex101: As an American, that's simply not true. I almost never hear any discussion about The Simpsons, whereas there's huge excitement whenever a new episode of Doctor Who comes out.
Exciting! Plus, the blog Topless Robot used one of my photos in their news article: http://www.toplessrobot.com/2014/02/lego_can_do_doctor_who_now_but_that_doesnt_mean_th.php
I put a project up on Cuusoo (currently in review) if folks want to support it: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/59243. I'm sure it will be one of many very soon. :)
@natro220 and Cult_Of_Skaro - I stand corrected then. I suppose quite a few British TV shows have recently made their way across to the US and experienced great popularity, so perhaps that would not be an issue worldwide.
That's an interesting one. Character Building/Character Group apparently showed a new series of Doctor Who figs at the recent Toy Fair, including a Peter Capaldi fig.
I'm not the biggest fan but would probably buy a Tardis for my son. I think a decent-sized Dalek would be more interesting though.
@Cult_of_Scaro and CapnRex: The numbers are readily available if you're actually curious as to whether Simpsons is more popular than Doctor Who in the US.
Simpsons gets anywhere from 3.77 - 8.97 million viewers per episode during a 22 episode season, the best non-sports Sunday viewing numbers in America (remember, NFL Football is on Sundays for much of the Simpsons season).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Simpsons_(season_24)
Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, a hugely promoted one-off, got their best ratings ever: 2.5 million.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/11/25/doctor-who-ratings-day/
So, the Simpsons least popular episode out of a 22 episode season gets about 50% more viewers than the best rated Doctor Who of all time.
I like both shows, and probably go out of my way to watch Doctor Who more than the Simpsons, but the popularity of the Simpsons completely overwhelms Doctor Who.
@bigw1974 You're comparing apples to oranges unfortunately. Doctor Who's popularity can't be measured using the outdated Nielsen ratings system. It receives massive support from other venues, such as Netflix and Hulu. As many people don't have cable (myself included), I watch it online. The Simpsons is on a broadcast network, meaning nearly everyone in the country can watch every episode without having to subscribe to cable television.
I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw this article's title on the homepage!
At this point it's a little bit surprising that LEGO doesn't just make some Doctor Who sets. But, now we have the ability, and extra incentive to create new projects and speed them along to 10,000!
Looking forward to owning a TARDIS!
I'd personally like to see two minifigure-scale TARDISes since there's a slightly different appearance between the Eccleston/Tennant and Smith(/Capaldi?) exteriors. And then the different interiors of the TARDIS. That's just to start off; an interior and exterior might be in the same set.
My numbers have a pretty strong correlation with commercial success in America. The numbers of people watching live on TV also normally correlate very well with those watching online. One often feeds the other as well, as was the case with Breaking Bad going to Netflix more than doubling the TV ratings for the last season.
If you have some other numbers, by all means, provide them.
Doctor Who was the 8th most watched show on Netflix in 2013 according to cnet.com. This isn't comparable to The Simpsons because they currently aren't streamable. However, it places well above The Simpsons contemporaries American Dad, South Park, and Futurama (Family Guy is 2). Doctor Who was also the most purchased TV show in the U.S. on ITunes in 2011 (couldn't find where it placed for 2012 or 2013...). A lot of this data is either not published or simply not measurable. My point is, Doctor Who is more popular in the U.S. than the measurable numbers will let you believe.
Doctor who boasts 77 million fans worldwide!
Yes, I read that article Please at least be honest in your assessment of contemporaries, two of those shows (Futurama and American Dad) have been cancelled for lack of ratings. Family Guy is a lot closer to Simpsons and their TV ratings are not even close.
In fact, not one show in the top 10 has better ratings than the Simpsons.

You can change your point to "Doctor Who is more popular in the U.S. than the measurable numbers will let you believe.", and I will agree with you on that.
However, at some point the shear weight of those numbers become irresistible. You cannot put Doctor Who in the same league with the Simpsons. Doctor Who is a cultural phenomenon in the UK. Simpsons is the same in the US. Even people who HATE the Simpsons know what it is and can probably name most of the main characters. People who don't like SF in the US often don't even know they are making new Doctor Who episodes.
It also may be the case that more Dr Who fans will be interested in LEGO sets about their favorite TV show than Simpsons fans will be. I'm a first-seventh Doctor fan without too much interest in the newest Doctors, but even given that limitation I can think of a dozen sets I'd be interested to see LEGO produce! And I'd dearly love to have a LEGO Dalek!
This probably isn't the best place to argue which show is more popular because Cuusoo are only accepting doctor who projects, no sets have been uploaded yet, and there are a dozen other sets that have already reached the review stage and we haven't heard much about them because Cuusoo is very slow!
But just because people know who Bart and Homer are, doesn't mean they are going to buy Lego with their likeness. Doctor Who fans are pretty intense...and I think will jump at any chance to own The Doctor's likeness in Lego. Sci-fi nerds tend to buy a lot of memorabelia.
Legend of Zelda please!!!!!
wow, all of a sudden, there are several doctor who sets on cuusoo, no surprise! :P
@people: of the people i know, doctor who is definitely the favorite compared to simpsons, just saying :)
YES! YES!!! YEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I disliked Character Buliding's construction, I loved the Doctor minifigs, and I'll be sad if I we don't get a Capaldi Doctor.
Never got into Dr. Who so I don't care one way or another. If they made a CM line I may get some to complete my CMF collection and to make custom figures.
More licensed sets? Er . . . yay?
Meh, I guess if it happens then more diversity in parts so that's always good.
One thing to not get our hopes up about. lego being in actual or active talks with the BBC over a Dr. Who license for a regular retail theme. My gut kinda says that if TLG was in any way talking with the BBC, or was even interested in doing so for anything other than a CuuSoo type limited run fan driven set, then they would have never mentioned the subject on CuuSoo, and instead would have simply left Dr, Who as a forbidden license until they themselves made a big announcement about acquiring it.
I also sort of suspect that right now someone in the TLG licensing department is ready to absolutely KILL someone over in the CuuSoo group because of this announcement. Granted they did want to let us know that Dr. Who projects would now be considered. But in effect it just set a bounty on Dr. Who submissions and declared to both the world and to the BBC that TLG would be willing to entertain a Dr. Who license. This public knowledge alone will greatly increase the actual cost of said license to TLG should they seek to gain it. Yesterday TLG probably could have gotten the license for a song after Character Builder failed to put out a breakaway hit with it. Today not so much. Public interest will have driven the price back up through the roof.
Lego plus Dr. Who would be a marriage of two of my favorite things. But for some reason I find myself only mildly excited at the possibility. Maybe because the show's recent popularity has led to such a glut of merchandising. Considering that Character Building has already had a line of Who products and presumably isn't extending the license, there isn't much profit in it. I'd be surprised if TLG isn't reading those tea leaves to decide not to make a line of their own. Perhaps the statement on Cuuso is their way of testing the waters by seeing if the fans can come up with anything better. It's an incredibly cost effective and risk-free way for them to outsource the idea-work.
That being said, I'm right there with Obi_G in hoping for a UCS K-9.
This TARDIS on Cuusoo is my project:

I think what shows people talk about all depends on the circles you run in. I never hear anything about Dr. Who, but I'm not friends with too many Whovians? (I guess is the term?). I've only watched one episode and had to turn it off because it was not very entertaining. I had no interest to start watching it again. If I have to watch multiple seasons just to get into it, not really worth my time. Probably why I don't have cable anymore.
With that said, the LEGO theme or a CUUSOO submission might actually be worthwhile, if done correctly. I'm mostly a minifigure collector, so if they looked decent enough, I would probably pick some up to populate my city/collection. But I don't have the mentality that I have to have the entire line or anything, unlike LOTR or HP when it was available.
I think i'd prefer an actual theme rather than a cuusoo one off, as these tend to be disproportionately expensive, more so than general licensed sets. I greatly support the idea of lego doctor who, as these two things have always been my favourite :)
Daleks! An army of Daleks!
But as much as I see the potential for Mini-figs and the different Dr's and their companions - I am not sure how well this would sell in the US. Not too many of my students even know Dr. Who.
However, my two boys (7&8) have a tendency to answer questions with: "Trust me, I'm the Doctor."
Well I Have added my TARDIS onto CUUSOO, and it was approved today !!
Please feel free to take a look and share with the world :)

Seriously, if somebody makes a Weeping Angel minifig, I am going to FREAK OUT.
Challenge accepted Zordboy ! :)
UCS DALEK!!! and a UCS K-9 from the Baker era :D
Also, a series of Tardis interior playsets. I know it wouldn't happen, but imagine a Death Star styled playset which attempted to share ALL of the Tardis interiors (to coincide with a CMF DW line to fill all of these spaces).
Ok, geek fest! Btw, for those across the pond. DW has been playing on U.S. Public Broadcast Stations since the late 70's. A good number of adult Whovians in the U.S. started watching the show long before the new re-incarnation came along (and are now in prime Lego buying age for themselves and their children). Anyone who doesn't believe this would sell in the U.S. will be able to hopefully find out the power of the sonic screwdriver on American soil.
