Maula's Ice Mammoth Stomper

Maula's Ice Mammoth Stomper

©2014 LEGO Group

Hot on the heels of the Ninjago images we added earlier, official pictures of the summer Chima sets have been published on Amazon.co.uk.

There's definitely an Ice Age vibe to them: mammoths, sabre-tooth tigers, ice vultures and so on. I haven't looked at them all closely yet, but the the mammoth minifigs in this Maula's Ice Mammoth Stomper did catch my eye.

Thanks Patch22.

I'm not really into the Chima line, but damn, that mammoth looks awesome.

By in United Kingdom,

I for one love these! And if Amazon.co.uk's dispatch dates are anything to go by, they'll all be released in June. They don't look too badly priced either. Can't wait for the influx of trans and new parts :-)

p.s. they've also put out official images of the City, Friends, Chima constraction and most of the Creator sets on Amazon.co.uk :-)

Oh, and curiously, just one of the Speedorz has official images: 70155.

^ Yes, so I see, I'm adding them here as we speak :-)

By in United States,

Is that large Figure in the Lion set based on the Hulk Mold , or what!? I'm with tntapples, I'm not really a Chima guy, but these look pretty cool. and lots of trans parts!!

By in United Kingdom,

Lots of those guys in the mammoth set have got a transparent leg. So close to being able to create a Star Wars ghost minifig.

Trans blue! Red! I absolutely love it. Maula's Ice Mammoth Stomper has got to be the best set there. Sir Fangar, Fluminox and Mungus are the coolest minifigures in the wave, in my opinion. Bring on June!

Eh, the whole Chima thing looks pretty weird to me, even more so than Ninjago. Perhaps it's just not my cup of tea. I wish they would have made the large elephant into a Oliphaunt instead of that hideous hollow blue box on stilts. I think the only good thing about it are those new (?) translucent bricks.

What is Chima coming too?

By in United States,

@Huw Will you be adding the Chima Constraction sets to the database? Thanks.

I think these sets look epic, that mammoth is so awesome! And the colours looks great together!.:D

Also thanks for mentioning me Huw!.;)

So close to being a Mumakil ..... I guess it might be useful for modding.

^^^ Already done.

By in United Kingdom,

Are some rather poor builds being disguised by trans-blue body parts?
We're a long way from building a full trans-blue torso, still missing one leg, the hips, the body, I think one arm, and the head. That's most of it, right?
And that mammoth looks hideous, like @Telcontar said, it's a box with bits stuck on.

Style? Check.
Substance? Hmm, not so sure.

^To be fair, the tribes are skeletal, literally, so the vehicles having their skeletons (the beams, etc.) showing is quite accurate, in my opinion.

At the same time though, the rib cage being larger, would be nice...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^I guess that explains it to some extent, though I still feel a mammoth's skeleton would be unlikely to contain such a perfect cuboid. ;)

The Eris eagle looks almost the same as the one we got in the first wave minus the colors. Lego could have given more effort, although it does look cool. That Mammoth Stomper makes me think of one thing: AT-AT.

@zips for bananas

We actually have both arms from the horrid spider trike vs electro set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Zipsforbananas: I agree. A few more angled plates or a slightly different shaped skeleton would be a bit more accurate.

the elephant mini fig's trunks having bones blows me away.

It would be absolutely AMAZING if Lego made a Mumakil from Lord of the Rings in a similar style..... :-O

By in Canada,

I agree with the few above saying this set would have been much better applied to the Lord of the Rings during the big battle in the Return of the King.

I know I would have purchased 2 or 3 for sure.

By in United States,

That mammoth looks like something straight out of Metal Slug.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry, but I think that trans-light-blue and (dark?) brown colour scheme looks quite awful.

By in United Kingdom,

@Legozebra, so we do, so that's 3 limbs out of 4, getting closer... :)

By in Australia,

I'm not sure how I feel about these. I've been loving all the different characters, and I'm having fun collecting the minifigs ... but the whole ice-zombie ice-age vibe, it all just seems so strange.

By in Canada,

It'd be fantastic if you could mark the subtheme of 70206–70212 as "constraction" for ease of searching!

Anyway, none of the new Chima sets are really on my wish list currently. There are a number of other themes I'm more committed to collecting this year. But at the same time, they're great designs. I love that all of the bad guy vehicles have a smaller, detachable vehicle, and the color schemes of the bad guy vehicles are also remarkably fresh and innovative. Who knew Tr. Light Blue and various earth tones could come together into something so beautiful? I also like that the theme continues to have great new minifigures, including the first female lion. And that we're starting to see wider use of constraction parts even in the System playsets!

Even as an avid constraction builder, the constraction sets don't particularly excite me. The torso shells, with detachable CHI cores, are horribly overspecialized in my opinion, with fewer connection points than any previous Hero Factory torso shells. Plus, most of the sets are fairly generic humanoid designs compared to the diverse and elaborate battle machines and monsters of this year's Hero Factory sets. I suppose it's good that these sets can fill that "humanoid warrior" niche while Hero Factory breaks away from it for a year, but it's still a little bit of a disappointment.

70206 CHI Laval's piece count is pitiful for a $15 set, even by constraction standards, though I suppose when you get right down to it the main change was swapping the eight two-piece claws for one-piece claws. The sets do boast great proportions, compelling color schemes, and lots of delicious parts and recolors.

There are some rumors that the Chima constraction sets might be cancelled in the US, on account of some confusing information conveyed by a CEE team member as well as their absence at the New York International Toy Fair. Apparently, according to a CEE team member, they've been cancelled, but showing up for pre-order on Amazon seems to fly in the face of that. I hope that they do get released in some capacity due to the wonderful MOCing potential their parts offer, but I'm not too keen on going out of my way to get them. At least, not until I've figured out just how I'm getting all the Hero Factory, Ninjago, and LEGO Movie sets on my wish list.

Trans medium blue looks so much more like ice than trans lt. blue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like that were getting trans blue legs! That'll make a lot of people happy. A lot of these new Chima sets, and some of the past waves remind me a lot of Zoids! Especially the elephant.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yea, but the. trans-blue legs only come in the right leg unfortunately. :-( I think LEGO does that on purpose for some reason, just so we can't have two trans-blue legs.

By in United States,

I think the Ice Mammoth Stomper looks utterly superb--but $90 for 604 parts (including 6 armored and heavily armed minifigures, so there can't be more than about 550 building parts) really seems a lot to pay! Especially since the other sets in the wave, including the big Phoenix base, all come in at much more reasonable price-per-part ratios. I'm very tempted to buy a Saber-Tooth Walker and two Ice Vultures, pick up some random parts on Bricklink with the remaining $10, download the instructions for the Mammoth and have some fun MOCing....

A shame, because I passed on the Scorpion and Spider wave so I could save my money for the Mammoth. Maybe I should change my mind before the older sets disappear!

By in Denmark,

As Telconstar and fuelbreak have mentioned: this sets screams OLIPHANT OLIPHANT! I BET that was the original thought behind it, but seeing that Chima outsells Lordoftherings in 10-1(?) I guess they added a bit sci-fi and got an elephant that kids will beg for... While we parents take a deep breath and ask ourself why TLC values money above reason!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@icey: That seems incredibly unlikely to me. Everything about this set seems to suggest it was designed with Chima in mind, from the boxy war-machine structure to the detachable flying machine. It could be repurposed as an Oliphaunt with heavy modification, but I think it's absurd to think that was the original intent.
