Ghostbusters reboot license picked up by LEGO
Posted by TheBrickPal,It's a day of LEGO Ghostbusters news: LEGO has picked up the license from Sony Pictures to produce construction toys based on the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot film, featuring women in the leading roles.
Since the film is going to be released in July 2016, expect to see the theme in stores next summer.
Thanks to just2good on Eurobricks for the news.

Cool, wonder how overpriced they are going to be (remember JW?).
^let us not forget the prices for those new Star Wars sets.
Good gracious, must Lego pick up the licenses for all popular franchises? xD
^ Yes, they must!
^^Yeah, I'd be okay with that.
^The new Tie Fighter and X-Wing (both of which I am waiting for a special discount) ARE over the price acquisition (the First Order Transport is neat BUT it could have been better at $79.99), I got Rey's Speeder the other day at $15.95 and the First Order Snowspeeder at $39.99. I am not going anywhere near Kylo Ren Command Ship unless I earn it at a contest.
I wonder if we will see the minidolls being used instead of mini figs.
I expected to see this sooner or later. Looking forward to picking up the car (we'll almost certainly get one - it's different to the one from the previous two films), and a SP Marshmallow Man (if he appears. I hope he will, as the Dimensions pack is a bit pricey at £15, but maybe I'll pick that up as a last resort if we don't get it, and if the pack goes on sale).
That article could just as well reference the Dimensions sets and the upcoming HQ, instead of hinting at a new line.
Perhaps there will be some new female hair pieces introduced? Maybe the existing parts will cover these ladies.
Am I the only person that really doesn't care about the new Ghostbusters movie?
^ no, you are definitely not alone. I refuse to give Hollywood money on remakes and reboots. is the laziest kind of filmmaking there is, and I refuse to support it with even $0.01
^^ same with me I hope it bombs big time. I have nothing against an all female cast for the main four. I just don't think any of them are all that funny. But hopefully we get more GB 1 and 2 sets now.
Screw this movie. And the $400 Firehouse.
^^^ might watch it once it hits television, but there are really some movies that don't need remaking. In my opinion, Ghostbusters is one of those movies.
I really can't help but feel like it's being remade to somehow be politically correct honestly.
That's all movies are anymore, reboots and remakes.
With that said, the sets could be neat. At least new female headpieces (one can hope). Also, I'd welcome more black female heads. Storm is great, but we could use more variety.
Its from the guy that directed Bridesmades, The Heat, and Spy, all pretty much spoofs of popular movie types starring all women. And Melissa McCarthy. Its a joke, he's taking a movie with a huge fan base and turning into a fad movie. Pure greed on Sony's part.
Well, at least now people can't complain that Lego doesn't make female minifigure action heroes.
I'll repost what I said on EB:
The article talks about Mattel doing the reboot GB *and* the classics. So the article isn't exclusively talking about the reboot. There is no direct reference to Lego doing the reboot. Nor is there that they are only doing the classic. But to conclude Lego is doing a theme based on the reboot, solely from the information in said article, is stretching the information a bit to far.
@SithLord ... no, you're not. Regardless of every other factor, it's an unnecessary remake. It's probably going to be *awful* just by that fact alone. And while I hope the movie does well, I personally have zero interest in the franchise, even with these particular stars (and maybe it's just me, but I don't find today's comedians all that funny, and that includes the four actors here).
That article mentions a larger scale Ecto-1 where the figures can sit in it. Is this a Lego version or an action figure version? I would definitely be in for a UCS Ecto-1!
Count me in as another person who has no interest in this new film (and I say that as someone who's been into Ghostbusters since the first film's original cinema release). I can't help feeling the only reason they're remaking the film is to be all PC with an all-female cast.
I'm looking forward to the Ghostbusters headquarters set being released though (although it may have to wait a few months as I suspect I'm going to be a bit broke for the next several months).
I don't care at all about this movie. And the sets will most likely be terribly expensive.
My problem with the new movie is it's a reboot that takes place in NYC while filmed Boston. They should have just said it's a new team for Boston.
Another bad movie that will give us good LEGO sets, like The Lone Ranger did.
Goodness it's always hilarious to watch sexists fall all over themselves to complain about this movie.
"It ruins the purity of the original!"
Did anyone here SEE the turd that was GHOSTBUSTERS II?
"I won't spend one red cent to support this creatively bankrupt movie!"
*gladly spends money on 1,000 other worthless nerd properties*
I love when people start throwing around -ist accusations because they don't want to have an honest discussion about gender/race/class, etc
Two people so far in these comments have openly wondered if this movie was being made in an attempt to cash in on a golden age of political correctness. That's a legitimate question possibly worthy of debate. And it really doesn't say anything at all - in either direction - about whether those two people are sexist or not.
But why be bothered to articulate or defend one point of view on the subject if one can instead just label the other side as bigots? It's just so much easier
And for the record my objection above had nothing to do with the casting or premise and everything to do with my disdain for remakes
^ And thank you for illustrating the main problem here. Any criticism of this movie (regardless of how valid or invalid) is going to be dismissed as an issue of sexism. What if the script is awful, or the budget doesn't allow for decent visual effects, or the acting is bad? "OMG you're just complaining because of sexism!!1!"
And have you ever noticed that tripping over yourself to tell people how much they suck, and then wondering why your targets are getting really defensive -- well, those two things might be connected.
I have no interest in this movie because I have zero interest in the Ghostbusters franchise at all. I've never seen the first two, but that would be sexist too because I'm obviously hating on the all-male cast, right? You know, I'm sorry but I can't recall a single Melissa McCarthy movie I've seen that I actually found funny.
And, to be on topic, the real end result will be a pile of super-expensive licensed Lego sets that we'll pick up on clearance months after the movie stops playing.
"Yet these same people will insist they're not sexist."
Because they're probably not.
Unless Werbals wants to confess to sexism because he/she hated Ghostbusters II because of its all-male cast. It's not like there are any other reasons to not enjoy something, is there? Nope. Has to be sexism.
"The mind boggles."
You're not wrong here.
Ugh...I hate Ghostbusters! Bad move for LEGO imo
This needs to not be a thing, definitely will not be seeing it
Also from the article, I was perhaps even more mystified and disturbed to learn they are remaking Jumanji. Why? That movie was pretty darn well done and had a good cast. It holds up really well when watched today too. So why does it need to be remade exactly ? It's like planet of the apes, Conan, footloose, red dawn, and a dozen other films that have been remade in the past few years. Why?!?!?!!??!?
I bet 20 dollars that these sets will most likely go on clearance and the movie will be remembered as "The remake no one wanted or asked for".
Sad to read people declaring the movie "bad" without seeing it. Paul Feig, the director, has put out some of the funniest comedies of the last few years, and is a great writer to boot. Lots of misinformed (and unfair/unreasonable) comments.
Well that makes two themes I won't be collecting next year, this and Angry Birds. My wallet continues to breath a sigh of relief.
@dougts
Eh, Jumanji was fine for it's time but the CG has aged horribly. As far as remakes/reboots go people are pretty fatigued with the concept in general, but to remake an "okay" movie barely gets on anyone's radar.
@Lego_Fox
Oh, there's already PLENTY of "remakes no one wanted or asked for".
" @Lego_Fox Oh, there's already PLENTY of "remakes no one wanted or asked for"."
And the vast majority of them are awful.
It'd be *great* if this broke the trend, but, honestly, what are the odds?
Be interesting to see how well an all female cast will sell to the typical 8-14 boy demographic. I wonder if Lego is experimenting here and will push it more towards girls to see how much interest there'll be. Most Lego 'hero' characters are male, so it's a great opportunity for Lego to add a bit more balance.
Personally I love gb1 and thought 2 was okay but I'm not bothered if there is a reboot and I'm not gonna get upset about it. I think the next film will definitely bring in alot more than it cost to make.
On a side note i think the idea of a few playsets hopefully without too many wheels is a great thing, and I'm always keen on more female hair pieces!
"All I have from Ghostbusters is a set number of 75828 with $79.99 NZD."
As seen on TheBrickFan
"Dude, unlike the movie coming out next year that people seem willing to pass judgment on despite the fact that it's not coming out until next year..."
Because people often have opinions on whether they might or might not enjoy certain things, without having the need to actually watch them? Have you sat down and watched every single movie that's come out this year? Have you watched every single episode of every single TV show that's been broadcast this year? Have you read every single book that's been printed this year? Listened to every single CD or track that every single recording artist or band has put out?
What's that, you've stuck to *only* the things that interested you, or that you thought you'd enjoy? That's funny.
"Seriously, if you see a big Hollywood comedy coming out starring a cast of A-list female comedians and your first thought is 'Here comes the PC brigade, because we all know women can't anchor comedies'..."
I would like to know where I wrote this was my first thought. Could you point that out to me? I'd be ever-so grateful.
My actual first thought was, "I have no interest in the Ghostbusters franchise so I won't go see this movie." That's not actually sexist (not in any definition in any language on planet Earth, although for some reason, you seem to think it is. I'd love to know why). But thank you for proving dougts's point. You're not interested in an actual dialogue about the topic, you're just interested in telling everybody not in lock-step with you (oh no, I don't actually find some of the stars that funny. Gasp!) what monsters they are.
Oh, and, "Here comes the PC brigade, because we all know women can't anchor comedies"? Holy long reach, Batman. If you're putting words in peoples' mouths, you could try much harder than that.
I think both sides are out there equally.
There have been plenty of folks out on the Internet or in real life whose first comments on the reboot was along the lines of "Never in a million years will I watch it because it is an all female cast, and so it absolutely must be feminism run amok and political correctness."
On the flip, I personally can't see any reason to do a Ghostbusters reboot. The first was good, but beyond that? The reality is Hollywood is a highly different climate today, and it is very hard to get movies made unless there is a proven IP behind it. This movie is being made sheerly in that vein. They think it will pull in money. It has a proven IP, and they think they have a new angle to update it to get in viewers. Hollywood isn't making the movie and changing things due to political correctness. They are making the movie as a money grab. Personally, I think they knew they could not simply do a remake...because nobody is going to compare to the previous leads they had before. What do they do? Reboot, change the characters completely, so they can say the movies are supposed to be different, it is a reboot, and then they can cash in on both the new movie, but pull out the old character cast as well, so they can sell that. I will be shocked if we do not see 'old cast' toys being sold, because they are going to go after the boy toy market. As said... It is all a money grab.
Really, I have no interest in the movie, or the sets.
Zordboy, they're hardly A-list actors. 2 of them have only had a run of a few years on SNL. Wiig I certainly wouldn't consider her A-list. McCarthy would be the only one I would. As she has actually been the top billed actor in movies before. But, A-list is subjective, so there's that.
@Legoguy29 Kristen Wiig could have been an A-lister after Bridesmaids, but she seems to have opted for smaller, non-hollywood projects.
As far as comedic talent, she's easily an A+ lister. The rest of the main cast.... not so much.
Melissa McCarthy is apparently on an upswing in visibility, but not an A-lister yet either.
I think this will be a worthy successor to the original films since we won't be getting a true Ghostbusters 3. All of the comedians attached to this version are talented and hilarious in their own right. And the Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy film "Spy" totally came out of nowhere as one of the funniest comedies I've seen in a long time! I'm looking forward to a new generation of ghostbusting!
The reboot is announced with what appears to be a bunch of unfunny comedians (female or male.. not funny is not funny) and directed by a guy who arguably really had one good movie made and now basically appears to be trampling over a classic, and, surprise, the internet loses its mind. Yes, I want another half effort '2 star' movie extravaganza with all the 'jokes' spoon fed to me by unfunny people (for a movie that doesn't need to be remade at all by the way).
I also guarantee you there are TONS of 'reboots' where there is no female lead in the original or remake and there is STILL such outrage being the 'reboot' as a bad idea. I would be lambasting this idea if the leads were Johan hill, Jack Black, Will Ferrell and Tracy Morgan, and it was directed by Judd Apatow. Mostly because I think all are really not funny, at least not as funny as people try to give them credit for, AND again it is a bad idea to try to reboot a movie when you have comic gold in the first-The bar is simply too high.
I think a better way to look at this is this way: Name ONE reboot made that was as good or better than the first version (and you have actually had seen the original)? I mean lauded by everyone as miles better than, or at least 'on par' with, the original. I think for every one movie that may be at least as good as the original you have many many clunkers out there and this just appears to be another in the line. There is a reason why Hollywood came up with the term 'reboot' instead of 'remake' because all such 'remake' labelled movies tend to be dogs so it was a PR move, which has not worked. Dogs are dogs.
The first movie was about 'nerds' who had a hypothesis that no-one believed and was in fact was true. The comedy was incidental to that initial premise - hence the humour was cleverly intertwined with an unlikely fact/hypothesis, some 'nerds' and one cool guy out of their league and non stereotypical ghosts. I am not sure, but I would strongly surmise that this remake has 'forced' jokes at the forefront, and is full of slapstick humour, rather have the humour fall naturally out of an unlikely situation, the 'jokes' will be the focus.
Although - I must admit as far as rebooting a franchise - the new Batman movies - Batman begins etc and the new Superman movie are far superior to their predecessors for me, Italian Job was on a par - but I can honestly think of no others. Most remakes are groan material tbh.
This is getting out of control. there's the people who want to hate on the movie, and then there's the people that are throwing out the sexism card. Im not saying don't share your opinion, but if your going to be fighting, take it to the forums.
