Brickset reaches tens of thousands of LEGO fans every day and we are constantly seeking to improve the website and our integration with its audience. We will therefore be publishing occasional polls which will allow us to ask a range of different questions, some of which will inform future developments on Brickset while others, including this one, will just be for fun!

2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the Modular Buildings range and that is the subject of our first poll. Everyone has their own favourites but which is the most popular overall?

What's your favourite Modular Building?

10182 Cafe Corner
10190 Market Street
10185 Green Grocer
10197 Fire Brigade
10211 Grand Emporium
10218 Pet Shop
10224 Town Hall
10232 Palace Cinema
10243 Parisian Restaurant
10246 Detective's Office
10251 Brick Bank
10255 Assembly Square

We will close the poll in a couple of days and the full results will be published shortly after that, although you can see how the percentages develop above. Let us know what you picked and why in the comments below.

This is a great idea, it will be so interesting to see the opinions of others in a statistical form.

By in Puerto Rico,

I have yet to buy a Lego Modular building due to both been realistic with the amount of cash I earn and that they don't have a place in the City I am building. The most that closes to the one I like is: Brick Bank.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Although I haven't gotten the Assembly Square yet, and it does look excellent, I have to give my vote to the Parisian Restaurant. In my opinion its the perfect balance of a beautiful exterior and shape, a beautiful and detailed interior, an amazing color-scheme, and a unique use of parts. It's really the complete package

This will certainly be interesting though...

By in United States,

As we all have different preferences and like different aspects of sets I thought Brickset discouraged which is better, what should I buy discussions. I'm sure this poll will spark great discourse. Detailed interiors vs no interiors, time length of availability and order of retirement, price point of modulars (I'm looking at you Town Hall), favorite modular designers, and lastly, is Market Square modular.

By in Germany,

Of those I've actually built (GE, PS, FB, TH and PC), I think I'd have to say Palace Cinema. I may well change my mind when I get round to building PR, BB and AS though ;-)

By in United Kingdom,

1. 10243 - Parisian Restaurant

This is the most realistic and most detailed of any modular building; it's packed with details to the brim. It’s very limited in its repetitive design. It also has a fresh layout which makes it smaller but this allows more interior detail and the overall model is exquisite and outstanding, it's definitely one of the best LEGO sets in recent history.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a great idea for a feature! I went for Assembly Square as it combines the best features of past Modular Buildings and is the most visually impressive IMO.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i voted for 10246 Detective's Office.
as it the one i like the look of most.
it is also one of the one's i don't yet own.
i do have Brick Bank, as it was £110 on JL, it has now jumped up in price.
DO is on my list for this year, some time in the next 4 months is my hope.
and AS is on the list but as it is new it's way down the list.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Parisian restaurant for me. Just the most beautiful looking building. Incredible detail. The artists studio at the top is a superb use of space and creative building. Just superb.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Detective's Office, Parisian Restaurant and Palace Cinema would be my top three, in that order. Palace Cinema would probably be higher if it had a better interior, but as a die-hard movie geek it just falls too short in that regard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was the most difficult vote I've had to do since November. lol

My favorites are Detective's Office and Parisian Restaurant, but I like the city 'feel' of the office more.

I only own the Pet Shop but trying to decide which one to get this year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Detective's office - I like the 1930's Detective feel, which seems straight out of films such as "The Maltese Falcon" or "Sunset Boulevard".

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't have AS yet and, of the older ones, only have PS, PC, PR, DO & BB, so I cannot easily judge the earlier models.
Of the ones I have, PR is my favourite. As people have said before, it has both a great exterior and interior and just looks gorgeous. The roof detailing is especially amazing.
Of the ones that I don't own, I think I would be hard-pressed to choose between CC, GE and GG, but would probably just go for GE, as my mini city street needs a department store and it's an imposing building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Building Parisian restaurant was heaven

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

I picked the Parisian Restaurant. It has many great colours, and details (on the facade and in the interior too), but it has still a solid size. I think this is my favourite modular building. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

From this poll it is not easy to "statistically" (or merely for curious insight) to weigh out what explains why any Modular wins: Is it theme? Overall looks? Building experience? Playability? Value? Unique parts? Innovation? Etc?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mine is whichever one I happen to be messing with or building at the moment.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It seems by comments alone that Parisian Restaurant will be the clear winner! It was the first modular I ever acquired and built. That said, I love the Brick Bank so much. It is gorgeous! I just have to get it one day. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not really qualified to make a decision as money and space constraints have prevented me from getting any modular buildings however Parisian restaurant is by far the best appearing one visually in all the photos I've seen

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't own any of them, but my favorite is Palace Cinema because it reminds me of the Center Theater in Elizabeth City, NC - the first movie theater I remember going to back in the early 70s.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So, there's going to be more polls. About what? Favourite theme? Favourite set? Something else?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ @JudgeChuck
no i do sort of see the link.
i can understand why the lego set would remind you of that place.
if it was a place you spent a lot of time at.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for the Parisian Restaurant as well. I was actually not interested in the Modulars until the Parisian was released. I like to build spaceships or fantasy creations. Towns just didn't interest me that much. While the Modulars looked nice, I felt they were too big and boxy, and too inert - you couldn't fly them around and make wooshing noises, so yeah, not much interest.

Then the Parisian was released, and I instantly fell in love with the smaller, friendlier size, the colors, the exterior design, the wrap-around porch... and the interior is even more amazing! I kept saying that I wanted to live in it! Building it was such an amazing experience, with delightful surprises everywhere - almost as good as building a spaceship!

I'm very happy that LEGO continued with the smaller, more detailed Modulars with lots of interesting little nooks and crannies, fun living spaces, and small shops. I did get all the new Modulars since the Parisian, and I like them all, but if I could choose only one, it would still be the Parisian. It is my house.

I also got three of the older sets (Town Hall, Fire Brigade, and Pet Shop), as they are my favorites of the previous releases, but without the Parisian I would not have bought them. The other older sets I have no interest in. They are just too big and boxy, and I don't like the designs that much. I also noticed that building the older Modulars is so boring compared to the newer ones. So yeah, the Parisian was definitely my hook, and will always remain special.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is going to be tough. I have them all (except Assembly Square) but have only built three of them so it's hard to choose a fave. I think i just need to find small flaws in as many as possible and nolarrow down the best through process of elimination. E.g. CC has no interior, PC wastes bricks on a car etc etc.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I don't own any of the modular buildings, but every time I look at pictures of the Parisian Restaurant I get the feeling that this may well be the best set Lego has ever made. It is just that gorgeous and, for me, perfectly captures the essence of what Lego is all about.

I might still buy it at some point before it is discontinued, even if only to put it into storage until I have more space to display Lego.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Parisian for me too. Need to build AS still though...

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I think people are going to vote for the more recent modulars simply because they have been available and discussed recently, in addition to the fact that they don't happen to own the older modulars. That said, I will vote for Green Grocer. Even though I don't own it (but I will one day!), I can clearly see the greatness of it over the others. It combines the fair size and the inner detailing, both of which are very important points of a modular. Too bad that the style completely changed after Palace Cinema was released.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

As controversial as this will be, I would be very much interested in the results of a poll for the best Lego set ever :-).

"Please enter the numbers of three sets (might all be distinct or all equal) that you consider to be among the best sets Lego has ever made".

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I have PR, PS, PC, DO and BB. I've just received AS as a gift, yet to be opened. I'm also in the process of building an adapted GG with the colours and parts I have available. My pick of favourite is the Parisian Restaurant due to it's beautiful finish, fun and novel building techniques, and fantastic interior and exterior detail.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I voted for the Pet Shop as it was the set that piqued my interest when I was in a toy shop in 2013. This set paved the way for my entry into the world of Lego!! I still think the Pet Shop is a work of art.

Gravatar
By in Lebanon,

Owning 9 of the modular buildings, my favorite is the Parisian Restaurant. The combination of colours details and overall aspect pushed the designers to overdo themselves in the next modulars. My choice might have changed if I've purchased the Assembly Square which looks promising to build.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I choose 10185 Green Grocer because I simply loved building it. It was my entry to the world of modular building. I also like and own 10197 Fire Brigade. From the more recent ones I would choose 10243 Parisian Restaurant.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love Assembly Square, but Parisian Restaurant was here first. Plus it was the first modular with a unique floor plan, not counting Market Street.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Great idea!
I only own Parisian Restaurant but planning to buy Assembly Square in the next few weeks.
Parisian striked me with amazing design, even though I'm not a City guy. But from what I see, Assembly Square is even better. I vote for the future. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the Parisian Restaurant a lot, but the building is just too narrow for me. I voted Detective's Office for the sort of rundown feeling of the set. Kind of Lego-noir, even with the silly mystery aspect.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Although I really like the Parisian restaurant I had to vote for the pet shop as it was the first one we got and the one that got us hooked on the modular, again another theme I wish I had got into much sooner.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'd say to pick the best is simply averaging key factors: originality, overall design, overall creativity, playability. I think those are more important factors than price, brick count and availability.

For me, the Detective's Office has the highest score, with Parisian Restaurant and Brick Bank in second and third place. All 3 have detailed interiors, a reasonable number of minifigs and look great on the outside. The Detective's Office wins for me because of the unique film noir feel and the gameplay feature of the illegal cookie smugglers :-) The Brick Bank has also a nice story, but the side and back walls are just plain bricks, so I give it third place.

I don't know yet what to think of Assembly Square. It is huge, with lots of minifigs, but I miss something that ties it all together.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

We should have a poll on which polls to have.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I voted for the Detective's Office. A close second would be the Parisian Restaurant, both have lots of details and interesting builds but Detective's Office has more playability.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have all of them except for Assembly Square, which I'll get soon. My favo(u)rite would have to be Parisian Restaurant, with Assembly Square almost tied with it. I was seven years old when I got Cafe Corner, my first modular, and Assembly Square will be the first one I'm "old enough for" (16+).
Obviously it's just a suggestion though, since I was capable of building them with my dad until I was 11, then on my own since I was 12.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't own any Modulars but I desperately want several, especially the Detective's Office and Parisian Restaurant.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I own all the MB's and PR is my favourite by far. I'm suprised though that PC scores rather high in the survey so far, as it is one of my least favourites. It has stickers, which already is a major bummer. But also the roof is terrible.

I've got a display cabinet at work, in which I can store 8 models. PC, TH, CC, MS and half of PS failed to claim a place... :-)

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Nothing comes close to the Parisian restaurant in grandeur or stylishness. The detailing is great, even on the backside. It captures the French spirit so well. With its European style though, it looks kinda awkward next to the other modulars which are rougher and more U.S. inspired.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I own them all except Market street. Don't like that one enough to pay the high price. For the rest, built and love them all, and would not like to part with any of them.
Agree GC is also spectacular and that would have my vote had PR not come along and darn it tick every single box I know.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sort of sad to see the Pet Shop so low on the list as of now (despite that I didn't vote for it instead of the Parisian Restaurant... I had no idea I was so in the majority on that one.) Regardless, I have to at least mention how much I love that set, even if I didn't vote for it. I certainly thinks it deserves higher than a measly 3%!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Of the ones I have, I'm going to echo everyone else and say the Restaurant. Something about its detail and atmosphere really appeals to me, and I love the artist's studio on top. Next would probably be the Detective's Office or Pet Shop- the former for its playable theme and more organic architecture joining the buildings, and the latter for its usefulness in a city scene.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

For me, the best modular is also the Parisian Restaurant. I liked the other ones, but the only one I bought is the Parisian Restaurant. It was a promise for me: if I was able to pass my DALF C1 exam of French, it would be the present I will give to myself...and as I passed it...I asked for it to Lego and I wrote even "Congratulations!" as a note.
I have it exposed in the bookstore, and it is the only one my wife allows me to have because she knows I worked hard to pass that exam.
Obviously, I have added more minifigures: the artista of CLM Series 4 (as boyfriend of the artista), the waiter of Series 9, the jazz man of Series 11, the pizza deliver from Series 12 (as the competence of the restaurant) and other in a Vespa.
What really surprised me, it is that there are a lot of people loving the Parisian Restaurant. I have read many posts about Modular Buildings and writters always love other ones. Moreover, even in places like Bricklink its Price has not grown greatly. Therefore, when I was Reading this post, I thought that it would be at the end of the classification. Surprisingly, many people share my opinión and, at the momento, it is ranked in the first place. Really good news. There are great building, buy it was the one that surprised me.
Obviously, when I was to Paris I took the minifigures of the PR and the couple signed their love in the "Pont des Arts" and the artists were proud in the Louvre Museum. They even walked through Montmartre.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm surprised there's very little love for the Town Hall. Do people not like it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think having more polls is a great idea. Also, I just got the Pet Shop from Bricklink and it was a great set, but I think the Detective's Office wins

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

I don't have every single one of them but from all I already built, my favourite was the Brick Bank so far. Really nice techniques, great details... It was a really nice time building it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't think the majority of people voting even have the assembly square. It's sold out everywhere. It kind of tilts the favor against it as many people don't have it. I love these polls and highly recommend more : ) like who is your favorite minifigure of series (fill in blank)?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love and voted for Cafe Corner, but how can Market Street not get any love? Considering its fan built says a lot. Thanks Brickset for all the fun.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always loved LEGO when I was much much younger... and would very seldom, occasionally buy a set here or there if I happened to see something while out shopping for other things. However when I wandered in to a Lego store in summer 2014 I saw the Parisian Restaurant and, well, the rest is history. The building techniques, the color, level of detail is exquisite. I did not even know it was a "modular" and it served as the reintroduction of LEGO as a hobby and obsessive need to acquire sets. For some reason, I don't think I am not alone! :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Because the question is "what's your favourite modular building", not "what's the best modular building", I picked Cafe Corner. It was the first one, and I was surprised (and I think quite a lot of other people were too) at Lego taking such a chance with releasing such a big, detailed, expensive set. It seemed so different from most other sets that were around at the time, even other Creator houses and so on.
I have all of them except Town Hall and Assembly Square.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Honestly its a real toss up for me of those that I own. (BB, PC, PS, PR, DO) I will also eventually purchase the Assembly Square and have read reviews and seen images of it along with all the older sets. I did go along with PR as many others have for many of the reasons mentioned above already.

I feel fortunate to have discovered these at the time I did as I missed out on the first several but really have enjoyed building and owning the ones I do. I hope Lego continues this tradition of the yearly modular as I always look forward to it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I enjoy most of the sets the fire brigade is by far my favorite. It has great playability and a decent vehicle. While many of the newer sets are more detailed, the playability is limited to those with the hands the size of a small primate.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I own PS, PC, PR, DO and I like the cinema tge best because it looks so distinctive and the ground floor exterior reminds me of my favourite defunct bar (Popolo in Newcastle's Pilgrim St). The interior is a bit sparse is the only downside.

Plan to get the 2 I don't own this year and also build my own multicoloured versions of the earlier modulars using any colour bricks I can get from PAB wall/Brick link.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hahaha, Market Street is 0%. Parisian Restaurant is my favorite, love the detail on it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know the Parisian Restaurant is almost universally loved. However, I don't think it fits with the theme of the other buildings. It's too refined. Too upscale. I can imagine the Fire Brigade or the Detective's Office on the streets of Brooklyn. But the Parisian Restaurant appears too nice for that part of town. That's why I've refrained from getting it so far.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I own them all and have to say that the Green Grocer is my favorite.

Any chance you can break down the poll even more with user data?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Town Hall, it does not have the details and built intricacies that Parisian Restaurant and other have, yet it represent an impressive building in size and overall look, what I call a real Building. I recently built the Big Ben and, while there is a lot of repetition, the final model is outstanding! I had similar feeling while building Town Hall. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Playablity: Detective's Office, secondly Brick Bank
Exterior looks: Green Grocer, secondly Market Street
Interior looks: Assembly Square, secondly Brick Bank
Possibility to modify: Palace Cinema, secondly Detective's Office
Overall: Parisian Restaurant
I would be interested in a ranking for playability, exterior looks, interior looks and the possibility to modify!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@JohnofCharleston I love the Town Hall, and I'm sure many people do, but it just might not be our absolute favorite.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They all have their virtues--yes, Market Square too--but Parisian Restaurant is just that little bit closer to perfect than the others. Moreover, while I agree it doesn't belong next to the DO, I have no problem with them being in the same city, or even on different blocks of the same street.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to say, I'm really astonished that Parisian Restaurant is so high on the list, as I find it to be the worst of the modulars by far. For me, it's the first, best example of trying to do too much in too little space, and it comes off as a cluttered mess as a result.

On top of that, the architectural detailing is lazy and uninspired, and the building is a massive eyesore when attached to the others, so I just don't see the appeal. Cafe Corner is my second least favorite, and it still blows Parisian Restaurant out of the water.

To be fair, Assembly Square looks like it will easily trump Parisian Restaurant in terms of 'disastrous mess,' but I'll wait to own it before I call that for sure.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I have built most of the modulars except for Fire Brigade, Market Street and Grand Emporium
No doubt in my mind that the Parisian Restaurant is my favourite overall set.
Plenty of contenders for second place including Green Grocer, Assembly Square and Pet Shop.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Market Street is the only one I don't own yet and have no plans to buy. I could have bought it when it was originally available, but I thought it was rather ugly. It's not a "real" modular set anyway. It was just grandfathered in.

I'm not as big a fan as some folks are of the Parisian Restaurant because it looks really odd sandwiched between the other buildings. People can sit on the deck and eat...and stare at a big empty wall next to them. Hopefully there will eventually be something with a short left side that could go well to the right of that building.

I bought the Town Hall the day my grandmother died as an attempt to cheer me up...and because it has a bride and groom and I was planning to ask my girlfriend to marry me in a couple months. After she said yes, we assembled it together. :)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I'll star to build my first modular...my dream is the "FIRE BRIGADE"...one problem...THE PRICE!...But i want it!

Gravatar
By in France,

Green grocer for me because :
Very very pleasant to build.
The finish size is really good compare to the last ones and the exterior details are great.
The ground floor was a very fun and interesting moment to build, and being a shop with fruit, vegetables etc give more attractivity and reality i think.
There are 2 "real" floors + the roof with a terrasse...excellent idea.
Many new parts in new color and building techniques...
Anyway, so many pros and no cons for me.
Definitely the best.
PS : speaking and writing about it i think i'm going to rebuid it for the pleasure...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would've voted PR if it was for "the best modular buildings" but my favourite goes to CC. I don't own the actual set, but I collected all the parts on BL and builded it and displayed it ever since. I had hours and hours of fun searching, buying, waiting for those parts, and building them, replacing parts that once not in the correct colors. It means so much to me just as a mere "modular". I just simply spent a great deal of my life on this one particular set. However, PR is really that good when it comes to over all balance, and I'm not supprised at all to see it is ranked the number one spot on the list.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Voted Green Grocer, with Fire Brigade as a close second. They had the size of Cafe Corner, but with interiors, but not the uber-detailed, part-consuming interiors of later modulars (e.g. Brick Bank, Detective's Office).

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I voted for the Green Grocer. I started collecting the modulars when the Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium and Pet Shop were the ones available. After 2 years of buying every new one I started to look back at the retired sets and wanted to have them too, but they are so expensive...
With the intention to buy the Tower Bridge I went to a lego-only store (not a brand strore) and suddenly there it was: a MISB Green Grocer in a glass case. I had to have it, and took it home. The build was amazing and it looks so great. The sand green color really pops out and the details on the ground floor are amazing. My runner ups are Parisian Restaurant and (after I build it this weekend) the Assembly Square.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Am I the only one who thought it was funny that Market Street had 0%? I don't own it so I don't know if it's bad or just not special. (I voted for the Parisian Restaurant, I love its details and in particular its elegance)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Right now I own the PS, PC, PR, DO and BB. I'll buy the AS later this year, and the other ones are on my wish list, in case I win the lottery.
My favourite is the Detective's Office. I like everything about is; the pool hall, the barbershop, the small alley in between, the detective's office, the bathroom and kitchen and the water tower on top. Great details, as wel as very nice minifigs.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I voted Detective's Office. It was my first Modular, I love the "film-noir" style, and the details are just awesome. The Parisian Restaurant is a very close second though, and not just because it was my second Modular ;-)
Third place in my world goes to Palace Cinema and Green Grocer, with Town Hall trailing a little behind.
Those are all the Modulars I have built so far, so Brick Bank and Assembly Square are not yet in my personal top five list, even though I am sure they will enter my top five as soon as I have built them.
Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium look nice but just don't excite me enough to even think about getting them. And Cafe Corner, Pet Shop and Market Street are just not for me. The missing interior of CC, the ugly backside of PS, and MS, well, it's just MS. Ugly from every angle imho.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I picked Parisian Resturant because 1.) It was the first modular I bought and instantly made me love this line of models and 2.) the level of detail in all the inside rooms and the architecture style on the outside really make this a beautiful model especially when you build it yourself and see the finished product in person.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I do own all of the modular buildings, and in retrospect I am very glad that I do, since around 2009 I originally thought that they might be too "big" for my Lego city which so far had only smaller buildings and none that really had multiple stories (not counting some two-storied fire stations, police departments and airports etc.). However, after the GG had come out, I could not resist, bought it and I just loved it, and at the time also the older ones CC and MS were available at a reasonable price. So since then I have collected them all.

I do agree with @TransNeonOrangeSpaceman that indeed it seems that the year of release of these sets is heavily reflected on the results, with the older ones on average trailing because they are much less well known. I can easily understand the appeal for PR, which I also do like a lot. My personal favorite though is Town Hall, because of its "classic" old town architecture, monumental size and many of the details, like the functioning elevator, the pillar entrance, the bell/clock tower, unique furniture and the auditorium on the back side.

In any case, I do believe that this series of modulars as sets has really done some good to the development of Lego in general, and I hope that we are still going to see many many new and interesting new buildings, although they are quite expensive and also very space-consuming in any lego city.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I didn't get assembly square because it looks too big. I have limited space and am NOT dismantling my scuderia Ferrari truck to make room for it. However the Parisian restaurant looks to have just the right combination of size and detail and I WISH I could afford to get one

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was the only one so far to vote for Market Street, but it was my introduction to these sets and the price point was great compared. I'd love to see them do more single/half street base wide buildings sold by themselves. The little community style store was weak, but did not need to be there in my opinion. I loved the balcony and stairs up the front and the details on the roof. I wish they had put windows on the back, but otherwise... I liked it. Guess it isn't that popular though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My pick was the Detective's Office, the designers did an excellent job creating a set of prohibition era buildings although the pool hall was my favorite part of the model. The idea of building a story into the model was a very good one in my opinion and it was pulled off very well.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Surprised at some of the resuls though I fully agree with the winner.

I personally think that Palace Cinema and Town Hall trail just slightly behind MS in being least spectacular. Don't get me wrong - all these sets are worth having but we are talking about picking the best of the best. I think GC and CC trail just slightly behind PR when it comes to beautiful facade. And although DO is nice I think it looks too American but I think therefore that is a cultural preference.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I choose the Brick Bank. I don't yet have this set, but it looks really, really nice.

The Parisian Restaurant is my 2 choice. I would also love to get the Assembly Square & the Palace Cinema before it retires.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I voted for the Green Grocer, as I sit and type this they are all on the shelf above. I really liked how much the Green Grocer improved on Cafe Corner and Market street. I also really liked the lack of symmetry due to the large bay down one side, the charming passageway and detailed small shop. It definitely makes me smile more than all the others, it also was very fairly priced! Perhaps over time they have gotten more detailed - the Parisian restaurant is a close second for me with exquisite detailing but maybe its that awkward stairwell at the side that puts me off it ever so much. I think the pet shop is underrated as a well priced parts pack. I guess as time goes on the ones people love now will probably be superseded in techniques and styles with whatever they come up with next..... Here's to 10 more years!

Gravatar

Cafe Corner holds a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to get it back when it came out, and it blows my mind to realize that was a decade ago. I loved the colors, the size, and the uniqueness (at the time) of being a corner building. It bothered me a little bit that it didn't have an interior, so I did what I would hope anyone reading this would do and made my own, with a diner on the ground floor and a hotel with a lobby and four bedrooms occupying the upper two. Even when other buildings started adding interiors they sometimes felt lacking or forced, so I really enjoyed having the flexibility and impetus to make my own.

Cafe Corner is the bar against which I've measured all the other modulars, and with how much of my own building I've put into making it just how I want it, I don't think it could ever be topped.

The poll results so far seem to suggest that recency is important. The highest ranked sets are also among the most recent. This may be due to more people owning more recent models (many people comment about 'missing out' on the first few sets). Or it might be that the more recent models have evolved to be 'better'? That is subject to opinion too, though.

It's the Parisian Restaurant for me. I love the building techniques and overall look of it. It also happens to be the Lego set that pulled me out of my dark ages. I wish I had discovered the modular buildings earlier. It would have done less damage to my wallet to purchase Cafe Corner and Green Grocer when they were on store shelves.

I was torn between The Grand Emporium and the Brick Bank. I went with Brick Bank. I also like the Town Hall, Parisian Restaurant, and Assembly Square.

Man, what a tough choice!!! I haven't gotten around to building Brick Bank or Assembly Square yet, oh no! I can pretty much guarantee that Market Street will be the least popular, and shouldn't really even count. Going to be pretty close between a few others.

I'm really surprised at the number of people that liked Detective's Office. Yes, the set looks great, but the actual build is as exciting as Town Hall, if not even more boring. Such a simple, straightforward, lacking in SNOT build. But still looks great,

Parisian Restaurant is hands-down my favorite Lego set ever. However, I do worry that the lack of availability of earlier models severely skews the results of the poll. Reading through the comments, a common thread is the statement "while I dont have _______, _______, or ______, I think that the best modular is ________". That's like me telling someone to not test-drive a car that I've never driven in simply because. So I worry how valid the results actually will be.

I had marvelled at the modular buildings for a long time, however my entire Lego budget (and then some lol) was always eaten up by trying to keep up with Star Wars sets. A couple weeks before Christmas I saw PS on sale for $130 and just happened to have some extra cash, so I bought my first modular. I was immediately hooked; the build, the details - both interior (although the townhouse half is very bare inside) and exterior, the completed look, all of it had me wanting to add to my new tiny street. I hadn't had a town layout since I was a kid, when my Lego city took up my entire bedroom floor except for the occasional bare spot to walk to the dressers and bed. In just over a month since I've devoted almost all of my Lego budget (again - and then some; to the dissatisfaction of my wife) to modulars, and managed to pick up DO, PC, and AS. I plan to purchase PR and BB soon and can't wait, although I'm going to have to invest in another table. By far the most time consumingly fun build has been AS, and I love the details, the nods to modulars past, the elements, and the varied architecture. It's got my vote for the best modular, however I do find it hard to get my hands inside the rooms, and get annoyed that everytime I try to fix something I knock more stuff down. Of course this is aggrevated by stuffing the interiors with every related spare accessory I've had on hand for years. The instruments and figures from 850486-1: Rock Band Minifigure Accessory Set have finally found a permanent home, as have my collection of extra guitars from Brickforge. I plan on equally stuffing full the other rooms in AS, although furnishing the Townhouse from PS has taken a back seat (I did manage to add a full basement - the two brick high one seemed like such a waste of space). That's my two cents, and there are no refunds. Thanks for this poll Brickset, and please keep more coming!

I'm in the process of selling off all mine except Fire Brigade. For one reason or another I became most attached to that one.

I voted for the Detectives office, this building just looks amazing from the distance, the second one would be propably Parisian Restaurant with its great detailed interior. I don't have the Assembly Square yet though but I don't like the use of those two technic pieces on the roof on the building in the middle, they just don't fit there.. too big..

I have not yet got the new one, but it is ordered. Not built the detectiv office.
For me it was ether Brick Bank or Parisian Resturant.
Voted the later

By in Brazil,

I own seven of them and my favourite is Fire Brigade. Even so, I voted Parisian Restaurant because objectivelly, thinking of it as LEGO and therefore something that has to be fun to play with as well as aesthetically appealing, PR has the edge by a hair with FB in a close second.

One thing, though, I really think Town Hall is underappreciated. It has cool features like the elevator. Ok, its outside is not that detailed, but it sure is big and imposing and perform its role well as the sober place of government in Brick Town...

Parisian restaurant. Sooo elegant.

My number 1 is Parisian Restaurant because of its architectural beauty and detail. In my opinion, french architecture is the most beautiful in the world and this is continued into Lego.

I have looked at the scores so far and am very happy with other peoples choices.

I would definitely put Detectives office 2nd and completely understand if someone put it 1st. I love the candy smuggling idea and the amount of play ability given by it and all the interior detail such as the office itself and the barber's mirror. The architecture is no as interesting as PR but it is still great.

Assembly Square is a hard choice. $400 AU is A LOT OF MONEY. Plus,it has an extra 16x32 area to build on so its hard to compare it to the other modulars. I love the dentists practice and am very happy that the lego dentist has a resemblance to my own dentist.
Brick Bank was a great modular, but it was again not as architecturally interesting as PR. The play value and detail were great too.
Fire Brigade would tie with Brick Bank. The details fine, as is the architecture and I love the old fire engine because I love old cars. I hope Lego does more old vehicles for the modular series.
Palace Cinema is ok…. The detail is ok…. The car is nice and the architecture is fair.
Am I sooo happy that Pet Shop is low on the list, as many people regard it as there 1. I think its one of the worst. The architecture is just plain, its alright but still not all that interesting and the interior details horrible. Paying $200 for a townhouse that’s only furnishings are 2 crates and some painters utensils??? I don’t see how anyone could even like Pet Shop.
Town Hall is great. The price was fair given what you get. It is a must-have for any city layout and was a good, strong (as in strong detail etc) modular building.
Grand Emporium was my first modular. The details ok.
The first 3 modular were ok but they had little or no interior detail so in my opinion there pretty bad.

It's perhaps been suggested but would be cool to have this survey done the same time next year to see what kind of results we would get with some time passed. We would have a new modular I am assuming of course and more people would have bought and built Assembly Square.

Detective's Office was my first modular, but I loved assembling the cinema and the restaurant. The bank has moved up on my list of favorites simply because I treated myself to the City Advent Calendar 60099 and now have someone else to rob it with. I have to do the Assembly Square before I can vote on it fairly, but it looks great!

Well, Huw, I would not take this poll too serious. Most of the voters haven't seen Cafe Corner or Market Street! I voted Green Grocer. It is one of a kind.

By in United Kingdom,

I have just bought and built my first modular (Parisian Restaurant) after looking at the video reviews of the four in my price range, (the other 3 were DO, BB & PC), and I love it. Everything about it is excellent, the build was great, I took 8 and a half hours because I like to savour a big build and all the interesting uses of everyday Lego elements is amazing (looking at you wheelarches). I am definitely hooked and am saving now for the DO which came second when deciding which one to start with.
