Pirates of the Caribbean ship to launch in March

Posted by ,

The March store calendar for China uploaded to LEGO's server today has revealed this tantalising glimpse of what looks to be a Pirates of the Caribbean ship of some sort, to be released ahead of the fifth film in the (somewhat tedious) franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Numbered 71042, it's said to be available to VIPs at the end of March.

There's a bigger image after the break that's been clarified as much as possible by CM4Sci although it's still not possible to make much out other than a brown hull.

By in United States,

I had heard the rumors about this set. If it's a nice set I might get it. I really enjoyed the first Pirates film, haven't really enjoyed the sequel's to much though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Was the (somewhat tedious) remark really necessary?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I saw the preview for the film attached to Rogue One and I was hopeful there would be more POTC sets. Nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes the 'somewhat tedious' remark was necessary.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It certainly was. I thought the first film was great. 2 and 3 were way too long and boring and I can't remember much about 4.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope it has enough cannons and, if it's big enough, an actual lower deck. These have been missing from LEGO pirate ships, barring the Imperial Flagship from 2010, for ages.

EDIT: Ship to launch? Very funny...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It actually looks like a flying ship. I don't see sails, and those two blue thing on the side looks like wings. I don't think that it has a lower deck, because it doesn't look that big.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Huw I don't disagree that the later films were rubbish, it just struck me as a bit unprofessional given that it doesn't add anything to the article.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The ship looks like it's folding in half, as if something is breaking it down the middle. Of course, that could be an illusion due to the blurry image, etc.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Ghosts Pirates!!! Neat for colonial era fans but not in my alley (but I would love to get the Pirate Ship from LotR).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Missed out on the first two PotC ships but no way I'm missing this one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I loved the original PotC theme, I seriously hope that there will be a whole wave of sets to accompany this ship!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ It was instantly forgettable.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I agree with @woosterlegos that it looks like a shipwreck -- a ship broken in half, maybe at rest on the beach. Would love to be wrong.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Many films are these days. The art of story telling has given way to endless special effects and cgi.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not sure if I like seeing opinions on movies where I see my LEGO uploads, and that unprofessional remark on the series is somewhat disrespectful.

Besides that, I would of thought that Worlds End/On Stranger tides (With Blackbeard) would of been some of the more memorable movies, but I guess if someone can't see something decent/good no use in changing their "Uninformed Opinion"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Uninformed? An opinions an opinion, some of us will agree some wont. But its hardly uninformed if he has seen them...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This isn't a professional website, it's a blog and catalog of LEGO. If you want a professional LEGO site there is lego.com. This is a fan site and a great database, but it's run by Huw and he can, and always has, shared his opinion. I don't always agree with it or how things are, but once again it's his site, and a fan website.

If he said "LEGO is making another dull, unimaginative X-Wing" would that be unprofessional?

Anyways I do agree that the ship doesn't look like it has a normal sail.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

To me it looks like a giant Orca with bits of ship on it's nose back and tail?

Stop getting your pants in bunches over a small dig at a film franchise peeps! Unless you are the writer of the films it hardly matters does it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope they remake the Black Pearl. I know, I know, blasphemy right? Well, I missed the Pearl and the Maersk train because I was oblivious to the LEGO set release model at the time my wife and I were getting into this whole show.

As far as the blurry ship image...I agree, it totally looks broken in half/damaged in an attack of some sort.

Gravatar
By in United States,

1 is clearly the best but I've seen it too many times that I don't care for it anymore, 2 and 3 tried too hard to be the first with a "deeper" and "complex" story but failed and just were boring, the 4th movie is a fun forgettable summer popcorn movie. I have 0 interest in the new movie though...it's going to bomb so bad.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was hoping for a Flying Dutchman, it doesn't seem to be the case. I remember that Jason from The Brick Show mentioned LEGO had a 'D2C' Flying Dutchman ship designed however due to the lack of the sales they scrapped the design :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully its a decent pirate ship, I dont have any and I'd like to get one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The ship looks small, and broken and I don't see any sails. But since this is a VIP early release it should be a massive set. Maybe this blurry image is more confusing then helpful, because what I see on the picture definitely doesn't look massive.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There was also a short film in the series released straight to DVD/blue ray called "Tales of the Code: Wedlocked". I haven't seen it but I understand it's a prequel to the first full-length film.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only reason I know that there is a fifth film coming is because I use Brickset.

Gravatar
By in France,

Just one set for the POTC 5 its disapointing...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 - "They tell us you still have money"

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Ooh, it looks interesting! Hopefully there will be a new Davy Jones minifigure in some set(s).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pretty excited about this, assuming it is an actual ship. The photo makes is look more like a ship wreck, which I'm much less excited about.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, I LOLed at the "(somewhat tedious)" comment :-)
And I've never seen the films, so I don't know/care if it's true. I like Huw's use of dry humour.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The Kraken pulling down the Pearl.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I also wondered if it was a flying ship, but a shipwreck is also an interesting idea... I hope we do get ghost pirates.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd like to say that 2 and 3 were films of my childhood. I love them and still do. Surprised by the hate they get... I agree though, 4 was a bit of a disappointment. Something about Jack's character was off. He was too much of a willing scapegoat.

I'm excited for this set AND film, though. Hoping they'll come out with a new wave to follow this, the old sets were too short-lived.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

@woosterlegos You might be onto something. It looks like the ship's mast is falling down.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Ladondorf I'm guessing it's the ship that the boy is on in the trailer? Where the ghost guy asks him to tell Jack death is coming very politely.

Gravatar
By in United States,

"Somewhat tedious", Huw? I know you are entitled to put your opinions in your articles. Do you think the sets based on films 2-4 were tedious, too?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Being D2C, it will be at least $150-200 and I wouldn't be surprised to see it higher with the way LEGO has been pricing things lately.

I am a bit shocked they are only doing a D2C set, but I guess that tells us how well the last wave did. I loved the last sets and I was hoping for more, at the very least for more Pirate figures/styled buildings/etc.

The picture is too blurry, but based on the shaping it does look like it is a wreck of some sort, which may actually include some great play features. Characters are up in the air, but they did release the sand green Banshee from the CMF line with the new ghost tail, so I wouldn't be surprised if they included that tail here also (maybe in the dark smokey gray color they used for the other ghost).

I have other priorities now though, so even if this set is amazing, I still won't be getting it for at least a year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

After looking at the picture a bit, my conclusion was that it is a ship under attack by the kraken, like @lamarider suggested. It looks like two arms (tentacles?) are grasping the ship and one is above it on the right. How this would work as a set, I'm not sure.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

High time for another D2C... I hope it's big and mean and full of hideous zombies.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Aye, The Kraken!! Also, the next minifigs are Pirates I believe..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Fairly sure that if they only release one set this will be the Silent Mary with ghost pirates captained by the antagonist for the film, Salazar.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Canceled Flying Dutchman? Is that you!?! :o

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is clearly either a shipwreck or a ship being broken in half by the Kraken. However, it surely can't be the Kraken because Davy Jones was ordered to kill it in At World's End and therefore it was just laying on the shore of an island dead. This is much more likely to be a Ghost Pirate hideout, but it looks fairly big. Not sure what to think about a ship that's broken in half but it's probably possible to 'fix' it together.

The scenery seems quite wintry too, like the ship is from one of the early Arctic explorers and was lost in the ice. Of course, this could just be foggy and rocky, but I don't see and beiges or greens

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sweet, i wish they were making more sets also

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I agree with woosterlegos. It looks like a shipwreck. and I think the red in the corner is a Naval officer. Has anyone seen the teaser trailer 4 this, where a Royal Navy ship and goes in some caves then some ghost pirates kill all the navy (:( ) soldiers and one ghost gives a cabin boy a message? I think this set is based on that. Plus the background looks like the cave scene too.

Here is a link to it, ill take it down if its too violent 4 this site.

Gravatar
By in United States,

May sound absurd, but what if there are TWO smaller ships?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why hate on things people enjoy? That's just mean.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't know if it's worth mentioning, but for some reason the film is called 'Salazar's revenge' in the UK and some other places, rather than 'Dead men tell no tales'.

I also thought the 4th movie was a dull disappointment so won't be rushing out to see this one, though always interested in new Lego sets regardless of the source material.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

People, we are talking about the LEGO set here, not the movies quality :P

- It DOES seems to be a shipwreck or an otherwise "damaged" ship by the blurry pic judging by the shape and the lack (?) of some parts under the port and at the stern.
- There doesn't seem to exist a cargo hold (again)
- Will we buy it? Probably yes, because we admittedly love PoTC LEGO sets

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm with Lego_Fox on this one. If you study the image you can see a brown blur on the left diving into a wave while on the right a black blur is emerging. A Black Pearl perhaps? I certainly hope so!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The last PotC movie was so terrible, and as a result the large wave of LEGO sets that accompanied the movie sold terribly. The only item that sold well were the pirate ships, and thankfully LEGO have identified this and have produced just a single tie-in for what will most likely be another forgettable entry into the franchise.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I agree that the franchise has grown tedious. The second and third films don't exist to me (good examples of what happens when a movie starts filming with an unfinished script or story). The fourth is ok, but it could have been done better.

On topic, I'm still disappointed that a imperial ship was never made for the Pirates theme, just a fort but incomplete without the Soldiers Outpost set. Hopefully we'll finally get one with PoTC.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly this picture shows nothing. We can't possibly be able to make out all the details with the blurred image and shouldn't judge the set until official pictures are released. I'm personally excited for the idea of another big licensed set. However, I'm still waiting for Lego to make Fantastic Beasts sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope they never make Fantastic Beasts LEGO sets. The whole Harry Potter series was completely uninteresting and I wish they would just let that franchise die. No need to waste development time on that when there are other more interesting things to develop. Things like Star Wars. I got Rex's AT-TE for $80 at my local Shopko and I will say they did a fantastic job on that set. It really has a lot of character.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Looks like a ship broken in two through the middle.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tedious or not. All four movies are some of the most successful in the movie history. As the last was the most successful it appears that people in general considers the franchise to be plain fantastic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think its either The Flying Dutchman or the Mary Celeste. It could be TFD because there had been rumors about it returning. The Mary Celeste is just a guess because its a famous Ghost Ship they haven't used yet from that time period. They don't go for historical accuracy, but they base a lot of stuff loosely on history.

Gravatar
By in Lebanon,

Looks like the ship is leaning on its right at a steep angle swirling in the storm... the sails are up, the rear mast broken, the central one somewhat missing...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Could this site keep editorial to separate, clearly marked, posts?

The constant elitism is tedious.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Brilliant news. My son hates your petty 'tedious' comment and he is generally annoyed at most of your reviews now. Thankfully he ignores them and enjoys what he enjoys.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, keep up the excellent work. And never hold back.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Best news since Lord of the Rings! (Seriously)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My guess is that it'll be the 'Silent Mary' ship.
Looking forward to it!
