Random set of the day: Road & Trail 4 x 4
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6675 Road & Trail 4 x 4, released during 1988. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 81 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 3,782 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $145.70, or eBay.

Look, Lego Group, even TOWN could use crater base plates. The people and minifigures have spoken - bring them back!
Oh cool. Double wheels and tires to make the wheels bigger. First time I've seen that.
Nice use of wine glasses for the exhausts. maybe its hydrogen powered and they fill up then are able to be drunk from?

set 733 used that technique for the F1 car.
These are all the parts you really need to build anything. A monster truck shirt guy driving a monster truck with operable doors! Simple colours, imaginative uses of parts, even a duallie like I mentioned a while ago. It's magical.
Pretty sure I have this one. It was really cool when it came out (still is). I think a year or so later they came out with spring-loaded wheel connectors so the follow up monster truck had a cool suspension feature. This had a great color scheme.
Most people don’t know this, but Blacktron was allied with the Decepticons and their vehicles were actually Cybertronians who agreed to adopt Blacktron’s colors. This is one such Transformer disguised as a 4x4 to do reconnaissance in Legoland Town.
It’s so tiny he can’t even fit his head inside…

Yeah. The sets from 1980-2010 were simple but got the job done and didn’t use all of the fancy over engineered pieces we have today.

He can. The roof is about a half stud higher than he is sitting down. It even has a sun roof
Blacktron car.
I always liked those printed doors. Only this set and 6357 used them. Also, he's obviously not on a road, nut I'm not entirely sure he's on a trail, either.

"Blacktron car."
Actually this was released 1 year before space police and 2 years before blacktron. So technically wouldn’t blacktron be based off of this town set?
Edit: read a feature wrong and thought it was sorted by year released but it was sorted by date released (someone please explain what that means to me). Thanks to @560heliport for pointing that out for me.
Check out that 4x4. That is hot. Someday, Jennifer. Someday. Wouldn't it be great to take that truck up to the lake? Throw a couple of sleeping bags in the back. Lie out underneath the stars.

It hardly seats one.
Love how simple yet dynamic the old photography was. Box art now is so manicured to the point it loses all personality in favor of showing every possible detail for sale.

ACTUALLY, Blacktron was released in 1987, a year before this set. Blacktron 2 was 1991, three years after this set.

Turns out I had the sets sorted by date released and not year released which I thought it was at. So I only looked at the first one. In hindsight it now makes sense why Blacktron came before space police and not the other way around. Whoops

Ah, so his head sticks out through the sunroof, like a giraffe in a Mini Cooper.

No he’s a little bit lower than the sunroof but about the same height of the actual roof. The sun roof is the standard glass plane. I think it’s about 1/16 of a plate.
The sun roof actually opens forward so it’s not really that effective because it just falls with any wind resistance.
I love the simplicity of this era.
And when I see this minifigure torso I always think of this set. It's just too fitting!
I didn't get this set but I was lucky to get the 6641, the previous version of this set. Both were excellent sets, this looking more aggressive of the two. Looking back, I wouldn't mind having them both.
I never had this, but my cousin did, and on building it he immediately swapped both axles with those on his 6521. Monster repair truck.

My sister was using the plates as an RC car race track in her city :-)
My brother had this one, and another, slightly later monster truck, which had actual suspension. It looks undeniably cool.
Lol I just sold this one

That’s an interesting timeframe for that take
When your neighbour bought 6641, you buy this!
Here another one who didn't have this set, but had the 6641. And obviously used his Technic collection to recreate this. Though why stop at those slightly bigger wheels when you have much bigger ones from 8853 and even 8865?
I think my brother eventually did get this one, but not entirely sure. It would explain though why I found 2 of those same torso pieces in my old stuff.

Check out 5540, it takes it to an even higher level!
I love that he's got a truck on his shirt. Feels like it's just a big kid driving this thing.

6357 is an amazing set. I was sooo excited to get it.
Tyre heaven with gold plated hub caps.

Where he goes, he doesn't need roads.
I was lucky enough to find one of these in an old toy shop just as I was coming out of my dark age. It's one of the few I still have constructed from then as it's just a joy. I'm more into MOCs than set collecting but whenever I think about making 6 wide vehicles I see something like this and 4 wide beckons. It just feels more 'LEGO'.

Blacktron doesn’t steal anything. They just take things that previously didn’t belong to them. Totally different thing, see?
@cm5878:
The other day, on the way home from work, I saw a semi cab with a tow hook that was somehow mounted to the fifth wheel, and it was towing another cab.
I had this and 6641. My Town was just all ate up with monster trucks.

Same here! I am pretty sure we had both of these as kids.

Me three, lol! Even though I collected mostly classic Space sets, I had to have these fun monster trucks when I was a kid. I still get them out and have them zoom around our town set up.

Most of the city and Star Wars along with the other original Lego themes. Sets before 2010 were somewhat simple and the bionicle G1 sets used mainly technic. CCBS wasn’t introduced until 2011.

Had 6641 as a kid. A friend gifted me his collection that contained 6641 and 6671 =D
One of my favourite sets as a child. I later swapped in a different head and hairpiece to make a Jack Burton minifig!

Fiberoptics (costing more to produce than the sets were sold for) - 1996
Mindstorms - 1998
Znap - 1998
Spybotics - 2002
And if you want to talk about over-engineered garbage, who could forget Galidor (2002)? No one. Not a soul. And not for lack of trying either. And I'm really just scratching the surface here, my guy.
The reason people raise eyebrows at the timeframe you mentioned, is because it's an infamous timeframe known for TLG's financial near-ruin through bad decisions and yes, overengineering. It might not be the best take, is what we're saying."
I forgot about Galidor and financial issues in 2002. I was really looking about the main system and technic themes, not Galidor.
@Ridgeheart:
Part of the over-engineering at that time was strictly in terms of quantity, not quality. That’s how you ended up with I think three theme-exclusive umbrellas that were all the same size, and each used a different type of connection to mount them on the pole. And two different trellises that were also the same size. This was a time when, if they had a right-handed widget, and flipping it over would work perfectly well for someone else, they’d design a left-handed dohickey instead.
I took the large wheels off and teamed it up with 6357 as it's escort vehicle.
I purchased a copy of 6660 in pretty good condition last year or so. It's one of my favorite small sets ever, even though I didn't own it as a kid. Now I really want this one. To the Bricklink!

I think a friend I had in grade school had it. I know he had 6054 (I think I got my copy of it from him as a birthday present) and 6085, which had me insanely jealous. He also had the original Optimus Prime.
The yellow truck from 60395 : Combo Race Pack would be today's modern 6 wide variant.
But bonus points for the trucks in 60295 : Stunt Show Arena , much bigger, but the suspension works very well as a toy.
Of course there have been many other monster trucks of all sorts of sizes and even 4 wide cars and monster trucks are found in sets, 60397 : Monster Truck Race just isn't very Town like, and I think 60395 looks better. Of course 60397 is still a good alternative to suspenstion trucks instead of 60295 as it's cheaper and the top section can still be made in whatever car.
Miss those 'hubs'...first got 'em in Technics Go-Cart set in Light Grey, and thought they were great...until you break a...'spoke' I guess you'd call it; then their useless, as it can't hold the axel. Still:)
Just another Blacktron disguising itself as a town set.
