Random set of the day: Supernova
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 7712 Supernova, released during 2006. It's one of 19 Exo-Force sets produced that year. It contains 287 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$20/£14.99.
It's owned by 1,419 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $105.20, or eBay.

Exo-Force had great designs and characters for anime fans. All of my light bricks still work without having to replace the batteries after all these years!
Man these were such a revelation back in the day. There had been LEGO “mechs,” of a sort.
But these were different. They were very Gundam-esque, had cool minifig prints, the best stickers ever, and incredible parts.
If Ninjago and other mechs weren’t such a runaway success, I’d love to see some reimaginings or even a whole new line. Maybe a continuation of the original.
Just don’t go back to the weird jungle series.
Loved this guy. I'm pretty sure he was never available in Australian stores, so I remember having to import him from a Bricklink seller in Denmark. Worth it.
I love how armed to the teeth this is (and really most Exo-Force sets.)

Exo-Force was always very fragile though. The sets looked great but had a bad reputation for falling apart if you looked at them funny. Lego has evolved their mechs a lot since in terms of stability and durability.
Exo-Force walked so Ninjago could run.
Funny seeing this pop up -- just got done finding the parts for and rebuilding my younger brother's old Supernova for his birthday. :P
With respect to the fragility...it's honestly not that bad. Fairly robust, decent articulation. More or less finished with a custom Exo-Force inspired mech templated around Supernova, and even with the tweaks I made, the platform is quite robust and reliable.
GIVEN THE EXPRESSIONS ON THE MINIFIGS (except Hitomi), IT FEELS INAPPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS EXO-FORCE SETS WITHOUT TYPING IN ALL-CAPS!
Oh, how I wish I'd gotten more Exo-Force sets than 8107. This is one of the (many) sets from the line on my wanted list.

SUPER CHROME BRICKSET TAB CLOSER!
Exo-Force was a great theme. I'm very thankful for the creative inginuity behind all the unique Mech designs. Striking Venom, 7707, for example was so outlandish. Aside from some smaller Mechs, every solo Mech set looked awesome. It's ceratinly one of those themes that never felt repetitive. While short lived, it was a joy even to look at their pictures.
Look like Ripley's 'Loader' from "Aliens" got "Jacked"...then "Maxxed"...
Exo-Force: where we use every wedge and curved piece in the inventory!

[narrator voice] to be continued on Exo-Force Z!"
WE’RE SENDING THE ROBOTS TO THE SHADOW REALM!!!
Never was particularly keen on this one. I realise they serve a story purpose (as solar panels) but those little flaps popping up all over its body just look daft. I had the same issue with the second wave of human mechs, that seemed to resemble a carnival float more than they did war machines. That staff also just looks really flimsy too, even compared to other slender weapons like Stealth Hunter’s sword. Just makes the whole thing seem slapped together rather half-heartedly because they needed a limited edition set
26 stickers. That was a huge amount of stickers for 2006.
I own this one since 2006.
It's super poseable and overall just looks awesome.
It's great, but might be better for display or careful play than bashing figures together young kids apparently like to do.
But that's okay. This seems to have been aimed at teens, which generally have finer motor skills.
The staff and gun are long range anyway, so it works great for what it does.
If anyone is wondering, the two flaps at the shoulders are attached with 2x2 technic plates with a pinhole. And the arms are as well to the rest of the hand. Add a boat stud on each like the Silent Strike of 7709 Sentai Fortress (which uses the same base design) and you're set.
It's not perfect, but at least it was affordable enough to be gifted back then. Today's titan-sized built-for-the-apocalypse mechs would immediately be the single big present a kid would get. It's that or a mini mech using mixel joints. Not much medium options exist between that now.
Oh, and did I mention the alt model? The Nova Crawler -like all 2006 alt models- actually had semi instructions online! It's awesome and looks totally different.
Gotta love the classic "gangsta" stance with the gun. Even for a big mech, it's ineffective, but it looks cool.
Takeshi won't takeshi from you.
I don't remember seeing this guy on Takeshi's Castle....
Now for some Takeshi's Castle sets ;-)

Agreed. Wave 1 was awesome, Wave 2 was bad and then Wave 3 was pretty good again, but it was too late by that point.
@MCLegoboy:
Mifune did that in Matrix 3, too, didn’t he? Hasn’t anyone watched the Everyone Loves Raymond episode where they conclusively proved, through playacting in the kitchen, that you can’t hit jack shooting like that?
On a more serious note, there was an incident a few years back where someone pulled a gun, on _four_ cops, and nearly unloaded it before any of them could even draw their weapons. Shooting at point blank range, he didn’t hit any of them. I didn’t watch the dashcam footage (which the city released pretty quickly), but I wondered if he was holding his gun like that.
@Ridgeheart:
I was being slightly sarcastic. While it was, at one point, the most popular comedy on TV, a lot of people seem to bear a grudge against it, as it often pops up on lists of overrated shows, shows that people refuse to watch, shows that people regret watching, etc. I skipped it in original broadcast, and only ended up catching it in reruns because I hadn’t yet made the jump from broadcast to cable, and if I didn’t have anything recorded from the night before, there weren’t many options before 8pm.
As for Mythbusters, I mostly skipped that, too, because I’d end up rooting for Adam to get savaged by whatever dangerous stunt they were doing that week. If they ever do a show where Jamie just blows stuff up, I’d be up for that, though.
This is not the REAL Super Nova. The real Super Nova is two words, and has a II at the end.
And it's set number 6832 .
But I guess if there was a Super Nova II, there had to have been a Super Nova 1? Does that make Exo-Force a prequel to Blacktron? I guess this does kinda have the colours of Blacktron 1. Just too much yellow, not enough black. but it's got some trans red missiles, so that's cool.
There is some serious frowning and growling here.
My mum used to tell me to quit grimacing otherwise my face would get stuck like that - I guess that's what happened to those poor souls.
I don't own any of those as I was kind of in a weak secondary dark age back then (was buying SW UCS and modulars but was not building anything). I'd like to own at least one to have some sort of a feel for the theme - maybe one day.
@HOBBES:
I mean, it's been, what, 17 years? And their expressions still haven't changed?
Exo-Force always felt really ahead of its time for me - I can't help but think that if it had come a few years later it may have been really successful for them.
The sets held a lot of play value for me when I was younger and they were contemporary, though they were admittedly a bit more fragile than desired.
While I like the design, this particular set isn't one I ever got.

It felt late to the party to me. Western obsession with anime had already peaked, from what I remember.

Are you kidding? That’s practically all teenagers watch these days. American entertainment sucks so bad they don’t want anything to do with it.
My own kids came to me and were like, “Can we watch some anime? All our friends at school do.”
It might’ve been the peak of Gen X watching Adult Swim, but it was really just the start.
@peterlmorris:
There was a time when there was almost no new animation that wasn’t anime. Anything that had any success spawned at least one or two clones. It’s like the networks forgot the world outside of Japan even existed. These days, there are still fans, sure, but there’s a much healthier variety of options for anyone else to pick from.
