Random set of the day: X1 Patrol Craft
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6861 X1 Patrol Craft, released during 1980. It's one of 5 Space sets produced that year. It contains 55 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$4.
It's owned by 1,961 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $325.00, or eBay.

Ah yes, nothing makes me want a set more than seeing it from the weirdest possible viewpoint.
Honestly, the most interesting part of the build is the green brick windscreen. What an unusual choice.
What a great small ship. $4….
This is unrelated but I am fed up of this happening
@Huw is there any rhyme or reason for my comments randomly not appearing? I have commented on today's random minifigure, yet if I log out, it isn't there. This has happened before on my old account @parkerwheresmypictures and now has happened to @beige . I have not knowingly done anything wrong on this website, or had any notifications about it
Always nice to see a set that came out the same year I did get picked for RSotD, especially a Space set.
I feel like this wouldn't be particularly eye-catching from any angle due to the abundance of Grey. Maybe they picked the back as it had the most colour of all the angles.
X1 patrol craft? sounds like a ship straight out of Star Wars.

Are you making sure to comment within the 20 minutes? I believe the on screen timer only counts when you are on the tab, but the actual timer keeps going even when you are on a different tab.

Yes, but if I remember correctly, that just doesn't post the comment.

Some of the coolest ships/vehicles are grey. Such as the Millennium Falcon, AT-AT, AT-ST, Death Star 1 and 2, galaxy explorer, Alien moon stalker, the RSotD and a few other ships.

That’s happened to me too. I had a huge 2 paragraph comment that didn’t post on one article, I believe it was the dune set. Then sometimes I have a comment that posts twice.
Back then, my LEGO collection consisted of a large number of 2x4, 2x3 and 2x2 bricks, along with some plates and a few odds and bits. This set was almost nothing *but* space parts. Wings, transparent 1x1 round bricks, engines, antennas, blasters, 2x2 round bricks... this set was an absolute windfall of special pieces. I saved up, quarter-by-quarter for washing the dishes to buy it.
Times... and sets... were different back then.
Fond memories of this set. My 2nd spaceship (both small), 5th space set overall and the only one I got in 1980 (my BIG set that year was town: Main Street.) Doesn't look like much now, but back then it was awesome to play with, given that Lego Space (and any minifig sets for that matter) had only been out for a couple years.
Remember gray and trans-green had only appeared in available sets for a couple years at this point, so they were actually exciting to see in a set! Before this all the colors you saw were red, yellow, blue, black, white and green (trees/baseplates only).

You're posting successfully now, so it's not like you're banned... what browser are you using? Do you have weird time settings that don't comport with everyone else's reality? I know a guy who manually sets his phone time and texts from the future... I'd imagine something like that might cause problems?

This is actually a new account I very recently made.

It's an unprinted, holographic HUD
I may be 49 but I still have an imagination
WA-HOOOO!!!:D One of my fave Space vehicles (aaaaaall together now) OF ALL TIME!!!:D Only one that bumps this a little bit is 918 : Space Transport...but, a fun time period overall:)
Wings with smooth leading edges were the best.
The Second Golden Age.
BEST. SET. EVER.

Possibly meant to be a hologram or HUD of sorts?

One of the unsung color schemes of Classic Space is light-grey with trans-green. I don’t have the numbers saved anywhere, and I’m not digging through all the old Space sets to check, but what I remember is that the three color schemes that each accounted for around 25% of the theme were proto-Futuron in 1st, the only Classic Space anyone seems to remember in 2nd, and this color scheme in 3rd. The other quarter is lots of random or slightly modified versions of the main three.

If you can see the comment highlighted with a red background (or red text on black), it means the comment _did_ successfully post. If it’s not showing up anymore after you log out, it’s likely one of two things. I’ve noticed that sometimes my comments post, then if I back out of the page and go back in, the comment doesn’t always appear until I refresh the page. The only other thing I know of is @Huw mentioned being able to shadow-ban someone. If that happens, it sounds like your posts would show up normally to you, but the only other people who would likely be able to see them would be site admins and mods.
I don’t see this post you said you made, and the post counts match the quantity of posts I can see. If you log back in and the post is there, it’s probably a shadow ban. You probably wouldn’t receive any notification, since the point of a shadow ban is to remove you from the experience (temporarily or permanently), without you realizing it. A more extreme step would probably be a full ban, possibly including your IP.
I have had a couple posts deleted, I’ve seen one for sure that I was waffling over reporting when it got deleted, and everyone has seen entire threads go south and get locked down. I don’t recall seeing anything that you did that might warrant a shadow ban, but offending posts may have been deleted, and I don’t read every thread. And I wouldn’t see anything if a shadow ban was in force. The one thing I can think of that could violate the TOS is registering for multiple accounts (there are other ways to ask questions).
This set wasn't available at my local Target store when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it was sold in Australia and would love to know if any one else from that time purchased one. When I came out of my dark ages in 2010, I wanted to complete my Classic Space collection (1978-1981). When I did a search on Brickset, I was surprised to find this little gem! I purchased mine from the States before the postage became prohibitively expensive. I find it quite striking as it is a dramatic departure design wise from the other small craft of the time (885 & 891 for example). Happy memories!

Thanks. I wonder what could have warranted one
Dude is sitting between two, giant engines almost the length of the craft which may or may not power twin cannons in front (like the Reliant in DS9). I’d surmise it’s called X1 because it’s a prototype design and this guy’s a test pilot. Maybe they were detecting the imminent rising of Blacktron and built this to respond. Hence, a patroller. Makes sense to me, anyway.
I have two partials of this set from two different bins. I’d like to put them together one day and see if I can get completion!
Twin engine in such a small vehicle seems overkill. I didn't drool over this set back in the '80s but it's a classic.
6970 has a better designed version of this craft

Wish I'd thought of that about 36 minutes earlier
Oh, this one is special--my first Lego set ever! I don't know what else to say about this one but that it started me on a long and wonderful journey that I'm still on today!
Classic ship design, although I must say it's one of those CS sets with an unbalanced and drab color scheme by today's standards. But the usage of SNOT here with the brackets is nice. I know that was common for engines and rockets back then, but to secure them with two brackets is extra nice. That actually requires a good understanding of lego geometry.

It's so good they dared to show it from this one. Honestly, the sunlit, grey engines give that "space is cold, silent and HUUUUUUGE!" vibe. And I think of the SWEP4 ISD establishing shot (or Spaceball 1).
Too bad this is a US only model. I had to bricklinkit, but the instructions are a different matter.
This set is great! I got it with my birthday money when I was 8. As mentioned earlier, there’s something about flying a ship with 2 giant rocket engines on each side of you that just screams cool!
They had to capture it from that angle to show off the Junk in that Trunk, if you catch my drift.
@twodoors : this set was a North America only regional exclusive, hence why you couldn't find it in Australia (or Germany for that matter).
That's also the reason for the absurd aftermarket prices for this compared to other small Classic Space sets from that era.
Same with 6901-1
Read that as “X1 Petrol Craft” for a minute there, I blame the Octan tanker we had two days ago
The boy racer of its time, the angle is to show off the engines which are the most interesting part illustrating that 3 bricks high = 4 studs wide. Otherwise from underneath the 3D view it's just 4 wings on a large square plate sitting on round bricks like someone has stolen the under-carriage.
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end

Minifigures were difficult to get back then. There was no BrickLink, BAM or CMFs. The Classic Space minifigure battle packs like 6701 would not come out until later and were not easy to find when they did (0015-1 and the like were, I think, region specific). Minifigures were a prized commodity!
This is it!!!
This is the set that started it all. I received it for Christmas 1981, and it must’ve quickly become my favorite toy because my parents made sure to find me more LEGO for birthdays and Christmases afterward.
Many of those pieces didn’t survive rough okay, though. Years later I found another copy at a physical Bricklink store in Pennsylvania, and I picked it up. It now occupies a special place on my desk.
My first non-box-of-bricks LEGO set! (Or at least one of… I don’t know the order in which I got the handful of classic space sets that I owned). It’s a beautiful craft. I built it over and over again from memory.
My first set! My dad told me he was going to get me a Lego set, and then a few days later he brought this home after work.
I built the back of box models as best I could at 5, and when I took it apart the pieces went into an old metal Folgers can so I would not loose them.
Still have the set, the trans green was lost and replaced when I was still a kid (not sure where the replacement came from), not sure I still have the exact mini-figure, and I only have a piece of the instructions, but I have it!

This was my first official LEGO set as well - same time frame. :) All pieces still in tact too. I should scan the box and send it to @Huw so he can load up better photos of it.
Trans green is always an underused and under appreciated colour; I was never really into Space other than to get some unusual pieces for my town builds but trans green is a great colour, just used on my MOC pharmacy sign...
This thing just screams experimental test craft built to reach high speeds - the pilot is sitting between two large rocket boosters! The only quibble I have is the lack of a canopy - though space is mostly a vacuum, I'm sure the test pilots wouldn't want to have any cosmic dust directly impacting their spacesuits at high speeds!

Thanks for letting me know. That answers a 13 year mystery for me! ;-)
I'm pretty darn sure this was my very first LEGO set... as a very little kid. I'm not even sure I was actually old enough for regular system sets. So I have a fondness for this set.

That’s what the little trans-green bit is for. It’s like that strip of plastic you mount to your hood to send bugs up and over the roof instead of splatting in the windshield.
Compared to other spaceship sets from the same era such as 924, this was like a Corvette or F-14 instead of a school bus or 727. Just so much cooler.
My dad had this and passed it down to me when I was old enough. Fond memories.
I liked this set as a child.
By the way, some months ago I did a redesign of the ship. :-)

Aside from others have suggested, I suspect one reason the photo is from such an unusual angle is simply because it's unusual--or rather, because more obvious angles are "usual." Introducing an oddball like this probably helped keep them all from visually blending together on the shelves.

This viewpoint was perfectly chosen to showcase the 4x4 cone pieces. Back in the day these pieces were the Hot Rot classic space pieces. Big rocket exhaust nozzle boost pieces.
This X1 shows it all…hence the name ;)
This was my first ever Space set (at the age of 8), and the one that gave me the Lego bug, after previously owning 386 and an unnamed basic set. Next up after this one was 487 and after that I was all in.
Loved all the Classic Space sets as a kid, but this was the small set that seemed attainable while still bringing a lot of heat in terms of swoosh appeal. This was one of the first sets in my childhood collection.

Awesome. Thank you very much.
Great design, and the instructions show so much attention to period detail.
Highly appreciated.
My first set with the transparent green brick. To be followed shortly by the Mobile Lab that appeared in the same year. Ah, the good old days of classic space.
The only complete Space set I still own!
Just saw a few of these on display at Brickworld Detroit.
