Well now that's a bit of a coincidence isn't it...

Rock Raiders vs. Power Miners, who wins? Who's digging to the center of the Earth and killing us all first?

It's beautiful

"What can we modernize about yesterday's set?"
"What about the unprinted brown rock golem?"
"Sure, let's see where that gets us..."
*presses upgrade*
"No no no go back, go back!!!"

It's going to join my nightmares, I just know it.

Not the Rock Raiders. They are canonically on Planet U somewhere in a distant Galaxy.

Sounds like they're the winners to me.

By in Canada,

I like how the front of this flips vertical like a real well drilling rig. What I don’t like is how poor Glaciator in the cage looks like he’s crying.

I was meaning they won't be drilling to the centre of the earth and killing us all. They might still destroy Planet U, and the Power Miners still destroy earth, so they both lose!

Disclaimer: Contains no actual titanium.

Much of my early childhood was spent poring over this set’s box art for hours from its appearance in The Lego Book (2009). I must’ve watched the commercial for it on YouTube at least 50 times…

I finally got it a few years back and it’s just as good as I’d hoped! The entire main body of the rig is attached to a pair of heavy ratchets that allow it to assume a vertical position and become a huge drilling tower, while simultaneously revealing a little lab inside.

If there’s any complaints I’d have, it’s very sparsely populated. Could’ve probably done with a few more miners to fill out all the stations.

But they came back, with plenty of fuel for their digging equipment.

I think it might take a little longer than 25 years for them to get back to earth. I mean, they only have Lego size wheels.

What? Don’t be silly. There are no roads in space. Only train tracks.

By in United Kingdom,

Got this a few years back, was absolutely taken in by the transformation feature. Like I said in yesterday’s, I love myself a mechanism.

Was never quite sold on the colour scheme of the Power Miners (especially compared to the grunge of Rock Raiders) but I will admit they’re cracking sets

By in Germany,

Didn't we just have one of those yesterday?

It seems to come with a crate full of bananas...

By in Poland,

It's a shame we don't have mining sets anymore, but out of these 2 that we got, Rock Raiders is by far my most favorite. Sure, Power Miners got more (in quantity) and more elaborate sets, but the flamboyant color scheme didn't really speak to me, whereas Rock Raiders got that gritty industrial sci-fi look that was really unique. Wish Rock Raiders had a second wave.

Woah, my first ever review on this site! I still have mine.

We did have Mars Mission, as well as the City mining theme a few years back.

Man, this set is still a beast all these years later. I remember getting it for Christmas the year it came out; it was the only toy I played with for weeks!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I have this one in sale limbo. Because I bought it built I have a good idea of how it lòoks in the flesh and I must say... it's big. Very big. It actually reminds me of Exo-Force in how it's just a big boxy skeleton. That said, I love how industrial it feels despite the toy-ish colors. It's like a mobile oil rig, wandering the wastes.
Still undecided on if I should keep it or not.

The set of my childhood dreams.

I think this might be a white whale of mine

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

A childhood favorite, rebuilt it back in 2017 and it has been on my shelf ever since except whenever i take it down to use it from time to time.

a thing with this set that i dont hear people talk about often is the winch with a hook at the back, as a child i usually used it to haul the thunder driller

Power Miners!!! Such an amazing theme, gone so soon.
Seriously LEGO, "sales were SLIGHTLY lower than expected in the third wave" is the absolute pettiest excuse for canceling one of the best themes ever!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The rocks rebelled and made their own living Rock machines later : 70352: Jestro's Headquarters , 70350: The Three Brothers , only for the knights to respond with their own "power" mining equipment 70354: Axl's Rumble Maker

Absolutely incredible set.

Back when Power Miners came out a lot of people were upset that it wasn't Rock Raiders, but honestly the functionality of Power Miners sets significantly outweighed the simplistic functions of Rock Raiders sets. This set was a great example, a horizontal drill vehicle (that drilled as it drove) which could convert into a vertical drilling platform with manual control.

If they're cracking, you should try to get a replacement.

By in Germany,

One of my favourite sets.
And I still have the conspiracy theory, that TLG did not believe in PM at first, thus not allowing large sets and the big fig rockmonsters.
After it became surprisingly succesfull, they took some of the rejects from the first wave and made them into the second. This thus explains why the second wave contains mainly larger sets, two very similiar ones and this one which is basically a better and large thunder drill.

By in United States,

Have always LOVED this look of this set, but I never managed to get it back in the day. I wanna pick it up soon, just hope I won’t have to fork over $407 for it XD

Gravatar
By in United States,

I... kind of have this. I got about 90% of it: no figs, no Rockmonster, and a few bits missing, used for a about $5-$10 nearly a decade ago--it's still sitting happily on my shelves, inhabited by my Rock Raiders.

I don't think that theory really has any merit at all. Keep in mind that the timetable for set development is typically YEARS long, which means that the wave two sets would be close to finalized well before wave one even hit shelves. There's no way that development of the summer sets including the larger rock monsters hadn't been well underway by the time the theme launched (and it launched with heavy advertising designed with the intention of making the theme into a big hit).

The actual explanation for the phenomenon you're describing (the second wave being bigger and more impressive than the first one) is that that happens with almost every theme—releases in the first half of the year are generally smaller compared to releases in the second half of the year. That's because the sets released later in the year typically are aimed to be big gifts during the holiday season, when bigger toys tend to sell better.

I have the rock monster. But then again, I have _all_ of the rock monsters. And almost nothing else. Priorities, you know?
