Random set of the day: Thunder Arrow Boat
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 2892 Thunder Arrow Boat, released during 1998. It's one of 20 Castle sets produced that year. It contains 20 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 379 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $61.10, or eBay.

I like this set.
Too bad it looks like it’s best used as a retreating vessel.
When your bark is worse than your bite.
As opposed to regular arrows.
I bought the boxed version of this (same set, different number) when I was a kid, I think, just to buy one of the cool Lion Knight shields.
Set does not contain Johnny Thunder. 0/10, do not want.
*Boat does not float*
*Johnny Thunder not included in this set*

Clever use of Newton's Laws. Launch the crossbow bolts to give you that little added push of speed. Of course, the guy's neck's been broken, so it's really a non-issue now.
Peak Lego design, and a classic set.
- Somebody, probably. But not me.
Hey, it’s The Exorcist on water!
i think there is a basic lego set i would buy new for $60, but something like this is just crazy to me.

it's not "retreating," it's "bravely advancing in the opposite direction!""
Well, Sir Robin bravely ran away. Nobody said anything about boats, so this must be someone else. A relative, perhaps? Sir Puffin? Sir Penguin? Sir Gull?

The 90s had some interesting set names...
I see two crossbows, so why isn't the set called Thunder Bolt Boat?
Complete we now have had all versions

I thought I bought two of these when they came out, just so I have a spare lion shield.
^^
Rowing down the river, knight looks over shoulder to see 10305: Lion Knights' Castle and wonders:
'...How long have I been gone!?!?':D
Also: isn't the shield on the wrong side? I mean, the way he's rowing; he's going to get SHOT IN THE BACK...And you know those Black Falcons will do that...They are the Blacktron of Castle...kidding:D

"If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $61.10"
Or you could buy 1752 for less than $10
:-)
I had that
Originally intended to be themed to ThunderCats as a Thundera Rowboat, LEGO was denied the license as it was outdated by 1996, so they pivoted to a Lion Knights knight in an armored boat for 1752 and 1804, but in 1998 wanted to leave another hint for their original intentions with this rerelease in 1998 with a new name.
And if you believed me, you shouldn't.

Not for new though.
I own the boxed vesion. One of those I got from a flea market originally, sold that one but since got another one out of nostalgia. I like how cute it looks.
Although it is affected by the inflated castle second-hand price curse, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you really want one or can find it for cheap somehow.
I can only imagine the sheer faff of trying to reload those crossbows while also not loosing the oars

Well, it's not a terribly interesting set, that's the only story I have.
This was an okay set to get more Royal Knights, especially since it came with a shield.
That faction had notoriously few generic minifigures in the smaller sets, with only 6044 having 3 knights, but none of them wearing the Royal Knights crest.
Back then, I wondered why the 1996 impulse line only had 3 sets: 1749, 1747 and the alternate version of this set 1752. The previous year had 5 sets (although the Pirates one was actually a 1994 release in some countries) and the following one had 5 as well. Turned out, there never was a set number of these little boxes per year. Especially since theme count went up starting in 1995.
Also this is the Kabaya version of the set, where info regarding year of release is kind of contracting across various sources. This was a series of four: 2889-2892 and I highly doubt they were released in different years. There might even be a boxed collection of all four around, like for Insectoids and Rock Raiders.

No, but as good as.
And I dare say someone who is willing to pay $60 for a boxed version of this set is usually in it for a resell and unlikely to even open it.
Even including the shield and the minifig, the 20 parts of this set can be had on Bricklink in as new (or even new) condition for between five and ten Euro.
Row, row, row your boat…

Depends on which way you’re rowing. If you’re rowing away, shield’s oriented to defend against the people you’re fleeing (assuming they didn’t outsmart you and send a squad ahead to cut off your escape). Alternately, this may be kingdom policy, to prevent the coins from getting damaged by inaccurate arrow fire.
@Brickalili:
There are crank-draw crossbows, which would take time, but could be reloaded from that position. However, this crossbow element has what appears to be a stirrup at the business end, which suggests it’s the lighter kind where you have to step in the stirrup and use a tool to yoink the string into a cocked position. Have _all_ the fun trying to pretzel your way into managing that with crossbows that are mounted on a coracle. Then again, depending on how sturdy the mountings are, maybe you could just plant a foot on the post and lean back to draw the string.
@Atuin:
Did Kabaya waves get launched en masse, or were they a week-by-week affair like Happy Meal toys? If the latter, maybe the promo straddled December-January?
Ah, yes, one of those "impossible to tell if I own or not" tiny sets.
It looks like a canoe to me.

I bought a few of these over the years whenever they turned up in a lot of castle or pirate sets, but I never paid more than a few bucks for it. They're quite abundant, so a good way to get multiples of that torso and shield, even though I never really loved the cartoony lion's head.

I have one of these attempting to row around the non-existent moat of 6090. Perhaps I'll mod it to add a lazy river inside so he can have some fun.

I don't know actually. A late December Release seems likely though.
There have been 4 Packs of them, including an entire wave, so maybe that's a hint?
