The trailer graphic is confusing to both Russians and pirates

By in Australia,

This is the closest we'll get to a Toys R Us store, these days.

Big RIP, but they also upcharged on the LEGO, so I guess it all evens out...

I loved this set along with its yellow companion. I miss TRU.

Toys R Us still exists as a brand in several countries, although they are under different ownership

Toys R Us definitely had some of the highest prices for basic Lego sets, but -- at least, in my local Australian Toys R Us -- they tended to have exclusive sets, and things that just weren't available, anywhere else (short of Lego.com, and the prices there were even worse), so I always found it was worth checking in there, every so often.

I kick myself...I kick myself; that I never got this nor 3221: LEGO City Truck. And really liked the look of these trucks, like true long-haul semis with sleeper units...and I don't think Lego has made better looking trucks, in 'realistic' look that is; which is a shame:|

@Zordboy:
Well, they had _this_, which was a true TRU exclusive. Not even available on LEGO.com. I actually got five copies of this set, so I could build one (to go with the yellow version) and raid the other four copies of enough blue fenders to make TWO WHOLE CARS. Yeah, first use of blue fenders, and you only got two per set.

I got 3221. It's a great set very good-looking as you say.

This was on the shelf during one of the maybe three TRU visits I made (as it was over a two hour drive, plus the then high gas prices), and I didn't buy it, even though I really wanted it.

By in Turkey,

Looking at the truck and the trailer this must be a huge set. As one of the reviewers mentioned it looks very much like a Volvo VN and it sure looks beautiful and sleek like the real thing.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Loved it so much. Thought I had two but apparently I had three orignally and gifted one to my friends son. Tried building a ToysrUs MOC 13 years ago but was always very basic first MOC in my incomplete city scene.

By in United States,

On one hand, I do miss Toys R Us, it was quite the experience as a kid walking into a massive, dedicated toy store. It's not like Target where your mom is there to pick up laundry detergent and you might pass by the toys, TRU is a trip mom makes especially for you!

...On the other hand, their Lego prices were always 10% more than other retailers, so that made the loss hurt less. x)

I still have the truck and I think the store mostly together, but I need to find the parts for the trailer again.

Yeah that’s what I’m talking about! Can just turn the head around so it’s just yellow, matches the rest of the giraffe. Or just admit it’s a mascot in a costume not the ‘real’ Geoffrey. About 5000 people own this set, one of them must also have the giraffe

Guilty! Though the giraffe guy is still sealed in the packet.

I miss the almost continual 25% off sales AND GWPs from TRU. That's why I have 5 sealed Darth Revans.

I'm saving them in order to buy myself a new soul.

By in Croatia,

It would be great that Lego made 8-wide version of this one!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The yellow version is a great set, so this one always both intrigued me but also wasn't that high on my radar. Bcause the shop was both a novelty and improvement to the original at the time. But at the same time the truck no longer had the 'big yellow Lego Truck' energy anymore.

Now owning the yellow version again, I'm not missing this one one bit!

It's not really acquirable for me anymore anyway.

By in Singapore,

I have this and 3221, and also the Geoffrey Lego set which they gave out for free.

TRU stores are still present in my country and the official Lego prices are tightly controlled regardless where you buy it from, e.g. LCS stores, Metro, TRU, Taka, Isetan, other specialty toy stores etc. so I'm surprised to hear they can markup the set prices in US TRU versus other US stores.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The store is smaller than the truck. This can happen with six-wide vehicles.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I somehow picked up two of these (in addition to the big yellow LEGO truck). I am not sure where they are at the moment.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't miss the TRU markup, but losing it was severing a link to my childhood. Inalso appreciated that they always seemed to have a little OLDER stock--not quite the quick turnover of Target or Walmart. There's just something about finding an older set at retail (even if it's just a few months older) that's otherwise gone.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Such a great set! My kids took apart the truck but the store lives on many years later. I think we'll reassemble one day.

Both of mine are open... and both are in storage at the moment. But I'm glad I got 7848. Toys 'R' Us may be gone in the US, but I still have this little piece of it.

@mavndad : I don't wanna grow up, 'cause maybe if I did
I couldn't be a Toys 'R' Us kid!

By in United States,

I have this. If I ever build a Lego city I will need more white and blue bricks to expand it. Then I will have to decide if 40305 is near by or on the other side of town.
I also have 71023, but my TRU would have been in storage by the time I got him.

I had no idea that teddy bear mould existed. It’s sort of menacing, hahaha.

“Should have dispensed with the building, made some LEGO boxes to deliver on the hand truck, and maybe make the truck yellow. That set would be cool.”

But keep the teddy bear.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish LEGO city offered more semi trucks with full covered trailers like this. This one looks great and I'm sorry I wasn't collecting at the time to have acquired it. They seem to offer at least one semi of some sort each year, with random flatbed, hauling plane, boat, helicopter x20, etc. Just wish a few of these type were more readily available.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Brickalili:
71023-4 is bright-light-yellow with orange spots. A minifig head in either color is still going to look weird because of how small the printed spots are. It would definitely read as person-in-a-costume.

@recce:
MSRP in the US is usually set by the biggest retailer to carry an item (in this case, TRU was the only game in town, but usually it’s Walmart for LEGO sets). Wholesale price is set (mostly) by the manufacturer. The “S” stands for “suggested”, so you can charge whatever you think you need to. Where you’re restricted is that if you mark it down, the listed “original” price can’t be higher than MSRP _unless_ you actually had it priced that high in the past. So anyone can mark a $49.99 set down from $49.99, but TRU could have marked it down from $59.99 since that’s probably what they would have marked it up to previously.

Only if you pair them with runty shacks like that “store”. My LEGO Store fills two standard baseplates, and is taller than the truck.

It was originally made for Belville, which might explain your reaction.

@MutoidMan: Hmmm...last time I went to my not-so-local TRU (it's in the city an hour South of my own), they don't really sell video games anymore...they gutted the whole video game section and replaced with guess what...Lego!!! So a win/loss situation, as the new Lego section is a vaaaaast improvement over what they had...but losing video games and DVDs/Blu-Rays...:|

By in United States,

When I first emerged from my dark ages in the early 2000s and started getting LEGO again, TRU originally had some decent pricing - nothing above MSRP, AFAICT, and with frequent sales. Then, at some point in the mid-2000s, I began seeing something at TRU I’d never seen before - LEGO sets *above* MSRP at a major mass-market retailer. Over the following years it got worse and worse. But I continued to go anyway, as they offered exclusives (such as this one, though I never got it, alas), and also had a better set selection than any other brick-and-mortar store near me (as I lived somewhere without a dedicated LEGO Store anywhere nearby, whereas TRU was seemingly ubiquitous throughout the US).

While I don’t have this I do have 3221, still in the box, and as with so many sets I look forward to building it one day. It’s amazing to contemplate such trucks IRL, though - vehicles that huge, carrying exclusively LEGO…

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, I have this one!! Got it on sale at a TRU in the early 2010's. Still enjoy going to TRUs in Spain and the weird Smyths/TRU stores in Germany.

By in United Kingdom,

I picked this up for $0.05 in Dallas many years back in a toys r us. I was visiting and made the stops at Walmart, K-mart, target and Toys r us. I saw it without a price and took it to the register for a price. The staff member said “5 cents…do you want it?” I paused and replied “there is another one - I might also go and grab it”. I picked up 2, paid a quarter and got 15c change. I don’t believe she really cared at all about the odd price. One had been returned and missing a few pieces - was added to the collection. The other was intact which I sold for £40 a few years later.

@Blondie_Wan:
For me, it was the back half of 2001. Bionicle released in July for North America, and when I realized that 8525 existed, and then realized that I could actually find it in regular retail stores, I was as on the hunt. Meijer near me got one shipment, which didn’t last long. TRU blew out their first shipment, and when the second shipment came in, prices went from $1.99 to $2.99. I asked why they were charging so much, and I was told that their wholesale prices were higher than what was clearly MSRP. Nobody in Michigan stocked mask packs ever again except TRU, who always charged 50% over MSRP. This happened all over again with S1 CMF, ironically with exactly the same prices.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They’ve underestimated the size of the shop to the truck, where are they going to put the delivery. One word naive 2/10

Gravatar
By in United States,

@PurpleDave: Talking about TRU and the Series One CMFs, the closest thing I had to encountering with that series was seeing the empty display box at my local TRU. An employee saw me looking at it and told me, "Yeah, those sold out fast."

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Robertdavies78:
There’s only three sets on the truck. There’s actually plenty of room. Way more than needed, even. They probably could have strapped them to the back of a scooter for delivery, or just given the driver rocket-powered rollerskates.

@TheOtherMike:
TRU stores that were top performers ended up getting sent a second shipment, but those went even faster. I had one check stock, and there was one store that showed full case quantity, so I made the gamble and drove out there. They told me people had been in multiple times looking for them, but that they didn’t know what they were supposed to be looking for in the stockroom. I was able to describe it, and got to pillage untouched packets. I had all the barcodes I was looking for memorized, so it went pretty quick.

Then the next year, I was at Brickworld Chicago, and Bryan Bonahoom comes out with a stack of sealed cases that Brickworld was able to secure. He wanted to raffle off complete sealed sets of 16. I offered to do the sorting in exchange for the extra Robots (one per case). They were getting hard to find stateside, if you weren’t near a LEGO Store (ours opened with S2, so never got a single case of S1), so I checked online. I found a German seller who was listing S1 Robots below MSRP…so I cleaned them out. I did okay, but in hindsight I shouldn’t have passed on so many Zombies. I wised up before it was too late, but I could have probably landed at least a dozen more at $2-3 each.
