Random set of the day: Fire Hovercraft
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 7944 Fire Hovercraft, released during 2007. It's one of 28 City sets produced that year. It contains 274 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$29.99/£24.99.
It's owned by 3,294 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $78.10, or eBay.

Sooooooo close to get a fire set and a fire fig, but in different sets.
Ooh, wrong era of Fire, @Huwbot.
Aw man it’s another one of those sets I kind of regret not getting. It just looks so cool.
And as a kid who had a GI Joe Killer WHALE in the 80s, the shape made nostalgic. But I ended up not pulling the trigger.
Look at the size of it! i wouldn't want to be a fire when that thing pulls up!
My hovercraft is full of fires.
I was really hoping today's RSotD would be a Lego Movie set, as I found out earlier today that it's the tenth anniversary of that film's general release in the US. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1490017/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Finn must be 18 and in his Dark Age by now. Poor kid.
Years ago, I was going to Bricks & Minifigures with my kids. We parked in the lot out front and as we were getting out of the car another car pulled up next to us. The driver gets out and sees my children and asks me, “Do your kids like LEGO? I was going to trade these in but I doubt they would give me what I want for them and your kids will probably get more joy out of them.” He opened the trunk of his car and inside were two huge bins of loose LEGO. It was mostly City sets from this era, including this set. It was missing the base element, but I found that in bulk at Bricks & Minifigs a few years later and completed the set.
It’s a great set. Not to scale with so much else in City but a great build. I love the hidden wheels on turntables that allow it to “hover” and the base element, Which should have been used for subsequent hovercraft.
Wow, look at that hing, I can easily see it turned into a war machine. Cannons are already installed. Just change the red with dark grey...
I had one of these as a kid.
Hmm...Wonder if anyone made the G.I. Joe 'Killer' W.H.A.L.E in Lego...(Googles)...THEY DID...AND A COBRA MORAY TOO.:D
According to my parents, this is the first LEGO set I ever built— it predates any of my memories!

I reckon with a father which is that much into it, his son will be even more into the hobby and not in his dark ages ;) i certanly hope it goes this way with my daughters. The community needs more girls!
A really small but neat feature is that the two engines in front actually rotate depending on the angle of the caster wheels underneath.
Is this based on a real thing? Because those “hoses” at the front really look like some kind of anti-air cannon and I want to know if that genuinely how they’d look
This set is fire!
So, that massive base was made just for this one set. Wow.
Is it hovercraft in new set 60419?
I know this one! 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
I wasn't a fan of the base when this came out, but looking back it's probably what made the wheel spinning and size possible and affordable. 2007 had some great City sets!
Any mocs using that massive skirt piece? I found one on rebrickable, a pusher tug. Meh.

City as a theme was only turning 3 years old in 2007. They managed to establish a lot of various public services by that time. And a hovercraft for the fire department.

No, it's just a boat https://brickset.com/parts/6440670/rubber-boat-22x10x3
Same hull as 60377: Explorer Diving Boat , just a different 2024 part number of same design.
That gigantic boat piece looks awesome! Imagine if LEGO brought it back for something like Ninjago or Jurassic World!

That's what happened to my dad and me! My dad's into it, but not as much as when I was little. He's not into it too much now (buys sets and never builds them, but he MOC's on occasion), but I've never had a dark age.
water in the fire? l no understand
This set is the only reason I knew what a hovercraft was as a kid.

This is strange for me to think about. To me, City has always been there, but that's because its introduction coincides almost exactly with my being old enough for system sets.

Not if they're doing their job right.

Whereas I've been into Lego since the '80s and City's predecessor, Town, was only a few years old. You dang kid, get offa my lawn! *shakes cane*
Is that bottom piece a whole piece, and can it float too?

Yes to both, I had a lot of fun with this set in the bath as a kid.

City is turning 20 next year. I feel old thinking about it, but there have been multiple generations of kids who grew up knowing only City.
*whispers: be glad you didn't have to endure 'town' in the late 90s, its absense in the early 2000s (except for the terrible Jack Stone theme and the excellent World City) and got to skip straight to the good bit. As for Town... it's now easier than ever to just get what you missed online ;)
This was released during my dark ages and when i stumbled upon it while browsing catalogs I was very impressed. This set, but also the artwork seems so full of life and power. Amazing set!

Isn't World City turning 20 this year? That one forgotten theme in 2004, that turned the theme into city in 2005.

World City debuted in 2003 with the Police wave (AKA the 'big brother is watching' wave). So it's 21 years already :)

I guess the Lego designers had The Police song 'every breath you take' on permanent repeat when they designed that wave of World City!

Yep! And that was after Lego had just barely escaped bankruptcy and were on the recovery. I've got to think they were planning on using it more but something didn't work out?
@Faefrost:
I was thinking they must have used it to make a police hovercraft as well, but it turns out 7045 uses the same Technic skirt system as 8824.

2007 seems to have more of that , like the large harbor set 7994 : LEGO City Harbor has some unique very large parts in it :
https://brickset.com/parts/4245136/roadway-straight-16x32
And of course the ship https://brickset.com/parts/4503919/ship-72x4x18-assembled
That said, even now LEGO made a new 50 x 20 x 7 hull for 60368 : Arctic Explorer Ship front half , so I wonder if that will show up again.
Makes good use of the large Vikings wheels in red!
