Today's random set is 4534 LEGO Express, released during 2002. It's one of 11 Trains sets produced that year. It contains 456 pieces, and its retail price was US$160.
It's owned by 304 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $643.00, or eBay.

LORE TIME!
The LEGO Express is crewed by the famous Conductor Charlie and Engineer Max. One night, when transporting the Gale's Eye diamond to the LEGOLAND Museum, the LEGO Express was hijacked by Senor Palomar, Rudo Villano, and Alexia Sinister, who kidnapped Charlie and stuffed him in a closet. Fortunately, a passenger who boarded the train at the Legoville Station teamed up with Charlie to radio Sheriff Wild Wyatt West and foil the villains' scheme.
Ah... how dearly I miss "Tales on the LEGO Express: The Heist"! All that remains is the game's script (and a fan recreation based upon it), a few clips of the animated cutscenes, and the memories of a few AFOLs such as myself.
Remember when LEGO made trains that could be motorised? I do.
A hefty price tag but, it's motorised and it looks stunning.
Another one that was very hard to find. It's a shame, because I have a heap of those passenger carriages in green, but they look lovely in classic blue.
I still wish the blue carriage had been a standalone set like the green one. This was such a great era :)

It's a shame so many of the old LEGO games and comics are so poorly preserved and documented. When people think of LEGO lore they often jump to Ninjago or BIONICLE, but there's a whole universe of fun adventures out there few get to see!

Didn't we just get two motorized trains back in 2022 and a trolley that could be motorized also in 2022?

There was 60337 in 2022 and in-between that set and this set, there have been multiple motorised trains in the City theme.

4186876.
I came across the STAMPed assembly with the light brick on Bricklink just the other day, fancy that. It baffled me at first because the stickers are obviously My Own Train, but I was only familiar with the standalone 10205 I had, which obviously doesn' t come with any electric components.
How express can a train that still runs on steam really be?
Considering how much those engines are designed to pull, only having one short coach does mean it should be able to go insanely fast. You know, until that first curve…

$278 adjusted for inflation. I guess trains have always been expensive.

Remember when Lego made trains that could fit on their own train track? Lego doesn't.

Just yesterday I played with my old 4563 and several tracks... after many years and it still works! Those motors were really tough!

I'd like to see you add a motor to continue the argument.
Ah, the LEGO LEGO Express, supplied by the Redundant Naming Rail Company.

Are you real, yes or no?
"It's one of 11 Trains sets produced that year."
Wow! That was quite the year for Lego trains!
*looks them up*
Wait, did they really just sell all components of this set, including even that platform with those minifigs, as a separate set? That's cheating!
(But considering this was also the year of the Santa Fe sets, I guess we can't really complain...)

My childhood was spent playing this train game, the Adventurers games, and the ancient (even by 2003 standards) Brick-Game. I wasn't smart / old enough to be good at the Junkbot games, but I still loved him.
Thanks for brining on a nostalgia wave.
Hey, this set and another version are also in the site updates category it seems. Perhaps new images have been provided?

For me it was the Adventurers games, the Junkbot game and a stop-motion Pirates game. I'm not sure the latter was official but it was expansive. Oh and the stuff on Bionicle.com. Believe it or not, but I rarely used a computer back then. It was just the kind of stuff you would find when you're interested in Lego.
I never heard of the abovementioned game. A shame it's now gone forever most likely. It sounds interesting.
Is that Bill Gates who's controlling the train?

That's Conductor Charlie! His good friend Engineer Max is in the cab driving the train.
It looks like the random selection spurred some sort of update for this set.

I love that they brought back minifigures who hadn't been seen for three years (in the first two cases at least; Alexia was newer) to be the villains of that game: it was always so fun to see the places where Adventurers, as one of my childhood favourites, would get acknowledgements outside of its own theme ^^
(If only Rock Raiders had got the same level of acknowledgement in other places...!)
I wonder if this heist was another one that Baron von Barron had hired Palomar and Villano for, just like was the case in the Jungle subtheme? It would make sense, especially since Barron's sister joined them this time around... in any case, I like that it officially connects the Train theme to Adventurers!
I honestly didn't remember much of the game itself: those guys showing up was the main detail that stood out to me at the time. Thanks for sharing the recap on it :D

I don't believe that 4186876 and 4186875 were actually sold separately. They just used sub-boxes for 4534 and 4535 due to the number of shared sections between them, and some of those are listed as sets in Brickset's database (on Bricklink all of them are).
