$60 seems pretty cheap considering this comes with a boat.

I always did love Coast Guard themes. If I had the space to do a large LEGO city, I’d make it heavily nautical.

The marbled, rocky raised baseplate is what makes this set for me, though I would like it to have been a little larger in footprint. Pretty sure that part was a random part before.

Stickers in this time period were terrible though. Crumby.

Maybe it's just the bright orange accents talking to me, but this is a real nice-lookin' set. Surprised I never bought it as a kid, guess I wasn't into City much.

Or it was too expensive. Yeah, probably that.

The minifig standing on the "water" next to his surfboard kinda ruins the effect.

That part also appeared in all the '06 BIONICLE playsets as well. The model is attached to the baseplate with four of those 2x2 plates with Technic pins on the bottom, making it super easy to swap out models on a whim!

I forget my motivation for buying this set. I suspect it was the boat. I never had a floating boat as a kid. Now I have a few! None of those other ones are as large as the one in this set though.

As a kid, I always loved floating LEGO boats. I would change out interiors so the boat could float safely and make sure the passengers had life jackets in case they got wet!

All these stickers curled up on me and the stupid rock included multicolored discolorations. No idea what happened there.

By in Australia,

Between the tower and the large boat, this set is wicked cool.

By in Poland,

I had a few coast guard sets, I like the color scheme. For some reason I really like this subtheme even though I live far from any coast.

More police and fire. (yawn).

This is decently done, though.

Don’t worry, surfer in distress, they’ve sent out their trained rescue shark to go get you!

A man has become stranded in the ocean outside of Sticker City!
HEY!
You can build the rescue boat and apply all the paper stickers just so they can be ruined in the water!
Use the winch to lower the lifeboat.
Oh no, a Shark has eaten the man!
HEY!
Next time, don't take so long, leave off the stickers.

The surfer's expression reminds me of this: https://imgflip.com/i/817ftg

I can totally imagine him, with that face still fixed, just pointing at the shark and yelling "A."

Golden times of City...

By in Netherlands,

A really nice set. I'm nostalgic for the era of course, but the combination of the substantial lighthouse-watchtower base, the pier and of course the huge ship make for a great flagship set of the theme.

@yellowcastle the rock is supposed to have a blend of colors. I own a set that has two of them and they had reddish spot from the start.

Everything has frozen over. That is why the surface is all white. He's upset because he thought he could go snowboarding, but there is no slope and the ice is to bumpy.

I remember being a little jealous when my friend got this set along with the helicopter for his birthday back in either ‘08 or ‘09. City Coast Guard will always rock.

I know, 16 years of (hyper-) inflation have to be taken into account, but 60 $ for this set with a ship AND a lighthouse still make one long for the 'good old days'...

Why in the heck would it be marbled on purpose?

Would be at least $90 in 2024 dollars, before additional price increases.

However LEGO can still do cheaper boats , at least in EU 60373 : Fire Rescue Boat is €20/$30, but same boat hull in another color 60438 : Sailboat is €20/$20. (not a lot of pieces in that but cloth sail + animal adds some of the price)

Real stone is usually variegated like that. Of course, when that’s the only piece in your model that looks that way, it just looks it’s from another brand.

It looks like I let my kids do arts and crafts while it was on the table. I had to turn it a very specific way to allow it to be in my bay and even still, I think I might have to toss it.

I wonder why the surfer’s surfboard can’t float?

It’s made of ABS. ABS is ever so slightly denser than water. It only floats if there are air bubbles clinging to its surface. Now, if they’d made it out of polyethylene…

Arrested Development had the idea first.

I really love the boat and the mountain piece. I thought the mountain was unique to this set, but it turns out it's used in the bionicle playsets also.
