By in United States,

I was gifted an entire collection of stuff from the 90s about 9 years ago, and this was one of the sets, and I'm pretty sure everything was there!
Pretty cool main build, the alternate model also surprisingly used up most of the parts when many alternate models in Creator sets today leave half the pieces off to the side, however, the stickers were applied across multiple pieces in the main build, so I found it easier to just have all the plastic stickers stuck to one another and not placed on the set at all. Hopefully that doesn't mess them up too bad, their adhesive was surprisingly still tacky, and being the plastic kind, I think they'll be pretty alright, but I haven't checked on them in forever.
Also, lots of nice shiny pieces. I miss chrome, but I understand why it's not done anymore.

I always wanted this set as a kid in the 90s, and finally found a good used one a few years ago. Long live Model Team!

By in United States,

I wanted this set so bad back in the day. Never managed to get it, but at least I got 40409.

@MCLegoboy: There's a reason I only applied the rear license plate sticker to 5510, which was the only Model Team set I own. It's technically a STAMP, but the vast majority if it is applied to the back of a 2x2 inverted slope. It was still adhering fine when I rebuilt it in 2018, coincidentally shortly before the set was selected for RSotD.

I read this too quickly and I thought it said "Blue Furry".

And I was like, wait, what?

By in New Zealand,

Oooooh! chrome.

By in Sweden,

I remember playing a lot with those chrome headlight pieces. They fit perfectly over the light system pieces used back at the time, making actual spotlights out of them to surprisingly good effect. This set also relied heavily on those arch and curved pieces, which must have been fairly new at the time. Or maybe they were just new to me.

By in Germany,

A lot of those chrome pieces were reused for 5571 the following year and surprisingly many found their way into 2148, which was also re-released around the same time as this set's re-release under the 'Legends' branding (which probably is less surprising given the similar pieces).

Model Team was a great theme. I'm glad that we had some great Creative Expert sets, and now have excellent Icons sets. Progression is unbelievable.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That chrome macaroni shape is the specific part that’s responsible for the term “illegal technique”. There was a much smaller car that linked two together with a non-friction Technic pin, and doing so would crimp the tips shut.

I don't know man, the lack of chrome nowadays seems like regression to me.

Shown in the infamous 'Stressing the Elements'...

I still never got the whole thing. Three problems:
1) Why did it happen in the first place? The Technic pin had no real structural reason to be there. The build would have been perfectly fine without it.
2) The set in question is technically not even an official product, it's a very limited promotional item only available at Legoland parks during a very limited time, very likely for free and as far as I know without official instructions. So why make such a fuss about a forgetable promotion?
3) The mismatched tire-wheel combo on that specific car is never even talked about.

I guess it was just thrown in there to cover up some other issues that Jamie Berard's presentation mentioned, but not fully explained: A rather deep and irreversible problem in the design of Technic bricks that dates back to the old 2x4 'proto-Technic' bricks from early '70s gear sets.

Also many older Technic sets had some very illegal builds that are hard to spot as such, as there are triangle arrangements that can not work in theory, but do work in actual builds because elements are bent. Ever bought an assembled (!) Technic set (prior to 2004) used and tried to disassemble? Be very careful!

This brings back fond memories of looking at Lego magazines (catalogs) in the nineties. That chrome just makes it pop.

A classic. Out of all the model team sets this might be the best: good size but not too large, detailed even without stickers, great color scheme, the least boxy shape. There's a good reason it was re-released as a legends set in 2004!

Not to diss on the other MT sets or anything. I just think that this one was the best value for what you paid.

That price though! Lego was always very expensive

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

They have made so many remakes for castle, pirates, space etc and still no love for Model Team. Such a great theme with amazing vehicles, and the licensed Icons sets without B-models of today don't even compare to these.

"It was the only Model Team set released that year."

It's not often we see that! Most sets chosen for RSotD are in a theme that has 2 or more sets!

Although for Model Team, Those sets were pretty big for their time so usually only one or two were released a year.

By in United Kingdom,

Useful parts set, especially with 6 wheels allowed you to create more interesting vehicles, which with only two main colours didn't look like a mess. The steering wheel connected to the rack and pinion steering reminded me of the classic Technic sets.

You're exactly right, 10269 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy would definetly benefit from using chrome.

By in Germany,

One of those sets that prove: If your gut feeling tells you that you like it, you should buy it, else you'll regret it. Damn, do I regret.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've got the re-released set 10151 from 2004. I wish they would reissue more sets from the 90s!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh look, it’s Lightning McQueen’s great grandfather!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

One of my last Model Team to get. I've been saving up for this MiSB or 10151 set for a long time, but every time I get close to the end, some other opportunity pops up on Bricklink or somewhere else.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Darnnit! It's not a Night Fury. Please LEGO, give us HTTYD sets already!

The furry market is still largely untapped by TLG. It's a goldmine waiting to happen.

The Fast and the (Blue) Furious - starring Blue Fury as the new McGuffin.

'You're never blue when you have family' - Dom

I can see it now... (and I'd rather not!)

Chima and Vidiyo already tried that.
One was a legendary theme and the other was a total flop.
It's pretty obvious which was which.

Sure it seems cheap now, but that's 1995 dollars. In 2024 dollars, it'd be around twice as much.

By in Canada,

As someone who sources most sets in my collection from sorting out bulk buys, I can say I have seldom found a Model Team set. Castle? Yes. Pirate? For sure. Space a plenty. Yes I have found some of the smaller and cheaper offerings, but I think everyone knew sets like this were just that good that tossing them in a box was a no-no.

Nah, in my opinion the Creator Expert/18+/Icons vehicle line IS Model Team in every way that matters. The only Technic function that Model Team ever had was steering. That's come standard in the modern sets since 2019, and last year's Land Rover has suspension too. The lack of a license for Model Team isn't much of a point of distinction for me, when I'm pretty sure the yellow Model Team jeep would have been licensed if Lego did licenses at the time, and so would the big semi trucks. What about B models? It's a shame that Lego doesn't do them anymore, but there are dozens of C models on Rebrickable for the modern sets. So there's oodles and oodles of rebuildability for them. I love classic sets as much as anybody, but to me the argument that Model Team gets no love doesn't hold water. Model Team, under a different name, has been one of Lego's most successful ongoing lines for the last ten years!

I wonder if this hot rod is based on something.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was lucky enough to get this set when it came out, just before I went to university. Many happy memories of building and rebuilding it sat on my bed. I still have it assembled, but it's in storage at the moment.

Model Team had all sorts of vehicles. Helicopters, boats, hot rods, bigfoots, and most importantly, semi trucks. I don't care too much about rebrickable b models either, the greed that has encompassed everything Lego means people are nowadays asking 10 to 20 euros just for instructions.

This was my favorite set growing up... i was beyond excited when i received it as a birthday gift. So many amazing memories tied to this set!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like the Monorail Transport Base in 1994, the Model Team Blue Fury was the "back of the catalog" that in 1995 I never got, but always arrested my gaze in awe of what LEGO bricks could achieve. Model Team seemed way out of reach both financially and my own abilities with building. But gosh, was it pretty to look at! All that chrome...I had fallen in love with chrome LEGO parts when I got the Hot Rod Club the year before for my birthday. So a giant hot rod with more chrome was right up my alley. I just didn't really think I could ever build it or play with it, much less afford it.

I had a second chance in the 2000s when this was rightfully re-released as LEGO LEGEND. But I was too caught up in Star Wars, BIONICLE, and some of the other main System-themed LEGO LEGENDS to attempt getting it then, either. At that point, I just desired chrome pieces. Little did I know LEGO was soon to do away with them entirely. Model Team as a theme was also eradicated, and for a time, LEGO's foray into detailed, large-scale car models seemed over and done with.

But it wasn't the end! I still feel a bit of disdain that it took the designers so many years to get a Creator Expert (later Icons) car to look and function as good as the Model Team sets of old. And even yet, chrome is never coming back. I pooled my resources a couple of years back into getting the Giant Truck, which is definitely the greatest Model Team ever released. But at the back of the catalog of my mind, I still see a page for Blue Fury, and for a moment, I waver and wonder if I didn't choose the wrong exemplar?

Not everything on rebrickable is good, but designing a decent model, then building it digitally and making the instructions properly usable is not a small task. The computer doesn’t just do it for you.

If you want to see what you’re really getting for your money, try following a fan design for a model in something like K’nex. Suddenly Lego and its associated costs start to feel like a better deal than you realised… !

To lego's credit, they did a homage to this specific set at one point: 40409 Hot Rod... a (gnashes teeth) GWP set.

Also there's this year's 31146 Flatbed Truck with Helicopter, which seems to homage 5571 Giant Truck.

It's something. More recent love than Aquazone ever got...

Oh, and I recall the MT letters being used on license plates somewhere to reference the theme. I forgot what set or sets had that.
