Random set of the day: Blue Racer
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6618 Blue Racer, released during 2000. It's one of 45 Town sets produced that year. It contains 23 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 626 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $7.20, or eBay.

The small vehicle streak continues!
He's blue, da-bi-dee, da-bi-die...
Looks like something a five year old made. Why did they make so many sets like this in the 90's and early 2000's, that were all very similar and poorly designed.
But it does have a cool minifigure torso print.
I think Huwbot has the need...
The need for speed!
@Maxbricks14:
Remember that, in those days, they didn't have nearly the range of parts we do today, and the set designers were not what we recognize as AFOLs.
I saw this torso recently in a bunch of minifigure parts someone was selling. It is a cool torso.

So the designers were children!?!

True the go carts evolved 30589
But with these small vehicles it's hard being new, looks at at quad nr. 48 60394 and nr. 44. 60300 boring
Speed's sad cousin???:)
Huwbot's in glitch mode.

And, now, those people are department heads at Lego.

I own 60300. It's a great bike, with the new turning action feature. And it's also much bigger too.
I just recently collected the entire Race series of sets, and found 6519 today, unopened, at my local LEGO reseller.
I wouldn't call the theme "underrated" or anything like that, but I've become really fond of it, lots of really fun vehicle designs and cool play features, even if most of them are "has suspension."
I'm trying to stop myself from getting this and the other tiny sets, since they're not very good sets, but they're part of the collection.
The trick is really that this, 6619 and 6707 were all released in boxes in most territories, but the polybag versions, 1282, 1283 and 1284, were all exclusive to Japan, along with the completely Japan-exclusive 1285, they all came with Kabaya candies.
One of the many shovelware town sets from that era.
With a torso like that, I think many commenters here might jump the shark on this set.

No, they were just adults looking for jobs. But they didn’t grow up playing with LEGO sets. More importantly, they didn’t grow up seeing the stuff AFOLs had been building, and trying to build the same way from an early age.
@SideSalad:
I’ve only obtained a few Kabaya sets. A friend sent me 2x 6964 and 1x 6965. Set listings show these to be polybags, but they were actually both. You got a boxed version of the set, and inside was the polybag and a packet of candy or gumballs. Those were going to go bad at some point, and the polybag was every bit as legitimate for MISB as the outer box, so I suspect that it’s standard to open the box, consumer the Kabaya stuff, and sell just the polybags.

That makes a lot of sense.
Still not about to spend upwards of ten dollars on 1285, even if my completionist brain wants it.
Yup, name checks out
Lego Stunt Rally!
Well, not this little go-kart, but the driver. I liked this game so much and spent a lot of time building custom tracks. There were many cool cars in this game, shame not all were made into sets.
Definetly a 2K set. I got that at first glance. Back in those years I was baffled by how bland some of the sets were, having seen some excellent sets in previous years. But they got us where we are now. I guess it had to happen.
You know, having recently looked through massive amounts of 90s sets... this particular set doesn't strike me as all that much worse than some of the more mid-tier stuff we got from that then-previous decade. Sure, it's not a beauty or anything, but if you look at this as slightly elongated go-kart it's quite servicable. There's even an engine with exhausts and a grille that presumably goes over the cylinders.
It's not great, but it's not too bad either, if you ask me. For the price at the time, anyway.
Lore time!
The driver is named Barney.

It bothers me that he and the rest of the Race figures are only named in a piece of supplemental material so they're all stuck with the driest possible names for their minifigure entries. If they'd just slapped some names on top of the boxes we could look for Barney and not "Race - Driver, Blue Shark."

Compared to some other characters of the era, the Race/Stunt Rally minifigs had their names shown quite obviously. They appeared (in a hard to miss way) in both the Stunt Rally PC and Game Boy games as well as being named in the Shop at Home catalogue.
Guys like Weazel or John of Mayne had their names only shown in rather hard to find promotional material, whilst some even older characters were only named in never released comics or audio dramas limited to specific languages.
The @huw is having a racing streak!

@Huw doesn't pick these, Huwbot (an automated script) doe, but yeah.
