Well thems is certainly some critters, that's for sure.
And thus the mini vehicle streak comes to an end.
Cute dragonfly.
X-Pods! Oh, how I wish I'd gotten all of the last wave, In fact, I sort of wish I'd gotten duplicates of the whole run.
You want creatures, you get creatures!
I saw the swooshes on the packaging and got worried. The curse has been lifted!
These look like proto-Mixels.
My first set of non-Star Wars Lego. Fun to use. Glad I kept the whole series.

Proto-mixels with a dash of those system Tahu builds.

If only Mixel joints had existed when these were being designed...
I built the Arvo Brothers’ “Kaneda’s bike” in 2014-15 and it uses four of this series’ pod lids for the wheels. At the time those suckers were pricy and I ended up buying some lots of pods off eBay. I built a lot of these little models, including this one, & I agree they were super fun! Oh the things you’ll do if you get hooked on Lego!
Somebody gave Huwbot a reboot whack.
These are so fun. The middle one particularly looks good to me.
Unfortunately, they also remind me of the Golden Era of Lego when they had free monthly mini-builds for kids. So, definitely bittersweet.
I know I bought at least one of the X-pods because I needed a piece for something. I could never figure out what to do with the actual pod part, though.
Of the initial wave, this was by far my favorite. Still ranks high amongst the full run.
@pocketone23:
Someone in my club pulled one of those in a Used lot last month, and knowing about that MOC/book, I thought it would be a big score. Turns out the price on those has bottomed out.
I got this one as a kid! Though I remember the other name more, "Wild Pod".
So many hours were spent building and rebuilding with these parts, trying to stretch the possibilities of what I could do with the pieces. So much time was spent on the old X-Pod World website, and I'm so glad LEGO.com ran a feature on it.
The X-Pods are at the core of what LEGO is for me. Wild creativity born from limitations. And cute portable containers.
Yes they’re all creatures gentleman… but the question is “what KIND of creatures are they”?
@pocketone23 Same, I also got several of these in the course of sourcing the parts for ISBN9788461641888 Kaneda's Bike.

Likewise, and I used white and orange to build a second model of the bike (red movie version and white “naked” front fork version)
The X-Pods were great! The parts could be used to build so many creatures/robots/aircraft/vehicles with each pod! It and Mixels were some of the best themes for the small budget!
The Kaneda's bike thing always irked me though. Because of part harvesting the price for this one has skyrocketed. I already have mine, but I hate to see such a good little set become overpriced like that!
@Binnekamp:
Hey, prices came way down. The entire set sells New for $17. Considering the age, that’s pretty low.
I always enjoyed trying to actually use the pods whenever I toyed around with my X-Pods, just gave an extra challenge. I remember being particularly happy with a sort of squashy frog looking thing I made, with the pod as its belly and leftover pieces inside as its latest catch

imagine if they made it modern X-pod Mixels! world wouldn't be ready."
I'd be ready!
I loved the X-pods as a kid, primarily for how cool the pod pieces were, but I have absolutely no idea what happened to mine :(
I didn't keep track of all the pieces in my pods but I sure as heck kept the pods, I love the way the main pod sections can lock together, I use mine as storage for specific colors of 1x1 tile variants.
But I did pick up the variant color of 4346, 4335, a little while back, basically brand new in the blister pack, I'll keep it intact the way I couldn't for this or any of the other ones.

I love a good 'The Far Side' reference in the morning. Smells like strangeness.
I really liked the X-Pods. Unfotunately the later waves (which had some interestong colors and concepts) were not as widely available as the first ones.
Oh no, I almost missed this RSotD!
I had this one, along with all the other x-pods in that came in the first wave. Out of all of them I think this was my least favorite but I liked playing with them all nonetheless.
I had so much fun building different models that were depicted in the instructions and merge them with other x-pods to create bigger sets. I didn't have the 2005 catalog so I didn't even know there was a second wave until many years later.
I still have all these x-pods but they are very worn out and I think some of the pieces may be missing. I remember there was a strap that allowed to, well, strap all the pods together to carry them, so I did that once and they opened and spilled on the street when I was on my way to my aunt. That was a poor design.
@Arnoldos:
There were two straps. I think the short one held 4-5 max, and the long one held the full run. Also, if you insert a 6L axle through the center of each pod, they won’t open unless you want them to/drive over them with a car.
Everyone so fond of this we decided to keep it for the next day too, huh?
@huw what happened with today’s random set article? Gremlins in the system? :-)
To anyone just tuning in, the Bad Batch Series Finale is just about to release! Huwbot was so excited for this that he forgot to update the random articles. He knows his priorities...
I came here for fellow Kaneda Bike builder's comments...
Wasn't disappointed. :)
The price might be bearable on those pod lids now (maybe $5 AUD each for nice ones?), but try sourcing the other hard-to-find Red parts, or some good condition Trans Black parts for the windscreen.
