Random set of the day: Victory Racer
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1612 Victory Racer, released during 1988. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 25 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 995 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $29.60, or eBay.

Another Day at the Races
Hopefully it's the only competitor. Doesn't look like it can claim a victory over anything!
And the joke. Even the audience is phoning it in.
That box/instruction art is terrible! 1988 has some much better box/instruction art than this.
Only three days, one missed, and Huwbot's already had a rebound
I like how all the people in the second row onwards ’appear’ like they’re up in arms and enjoying themselves whereas the front row is all stoic and unperturbed. Hmph, some car drove by. Interesting.

Their arms aren't up. It's just because the heads of the people in front are blocking their shoulders, so it looks like their arms are up.
Speed Champions have come a long way
I like the shaping, but this kind of design appeared in so many other sets...
It probably came free with something or along with another thing, so in that sense it's pretty good to get at least!
As for the background... I thought they were flags at first. The unflattering angle of the set on it doesn't help.
Not as strong of a reveal as the ones from yesterday were but still something.
Quite the presumptuous name there
This wasn't a terrible little model compared with most of the juniorised rubbish that was standard fare a decade later. I had this one thanks to a cereal promotion, most likely Weetabix. As a kid I ate a LOT of Weetabix.
Sold it along with 6381 and a few other racing car promo sets while I was still young, my Town layout was becoming a bit too motorsport-heavy.

Better than 1989's 1898!
And I say again: HOW BIG IS SPEED'S FAMILY???:D

Well, you clearly haven't seen the competitors yet ;-)
I'd say just from the looks of it this beats the Road Racer and Formula 1 Racer, thought it might have a hard time with the smoother looking Sprint Racer...
I remember this came in a polybag.

I guess it had something to do with the way this was available. Certain promo sets differed quite drastically in style to the regular sets of the same year.
I wonder what was actually the case with this set (and the dragster or something from the same year?). Does anyone have some more info on how this set was distributed? I doubt it's just your regular retail store polybag...

6503 is one of my favorite small sets from my childhood, so yeah, this set claiming victory might be premature.
The racing streak lives!
Not to be confused with 1477 Red Race Car Number 3, 6509 Red Devil Racer, or the number 3 from 6395 Victory Lap Raceway or 6381 Motor Speedway.

Lego got some mileage (pun intended) out of that slope, didn't they?
