Warning to anyone with Entomophobia!

The galaxy squad sets were cool, but the bugs were just, eugh!

No, he's not coming to sting any warps

The designers of Galaxy Squad knew that it was (most likely) Lego's last chance at a solo space theme, and boy did they go HARD. Crazy unique minifigures that were way ahead of their time, amazing builds that split apart in the best way possible (that is, making the vehicles look good when together or not), and FOUR different factions of space in one series!?!? BRING BACK GALAXY SQUAD!

The only Galaxy Squad set I got! I don’t remember much of why I got it but I was in my Poptropica era so I looked up “stinger” on the wiki for play ideas. I got a Honey Nut Cheerios ad game where you dodged stingers. This has, from thence forth, been the cursed Honey Nut Cheerios commercial monster that bursts through a wall and attacks after they do the Honey Nut Cheerios song.

Also weird story: I once ran into one of my friends in a store when I was younger and this exact set was in her mom's cart

I never did care for the human ships in Galaxy Squad, but man those giant bugs were cool. My parents never got me any of them and I still haven't gone back myself, but I'd love to make a horde of 'em someday. I even want to get extra parts to build extra copies of the smaller ones included as side builds in other sets. The swarm must rise!

I don’t care what anyone says, these bugs were awesome. This one is a little spindly, but you can take the basic structure and rearrange it into something less floppy.

Long live SPACE!

By in Australia,

This was my first Galaxy Squad set, and after I bought this one, it was like, yeah, I need the rest of them now. I didn't mind the human factions and their ships, but the coolest part of the line was definitely the gigantic cybernetic insects (that now regularly lay siege to my Lego city).

Galaxy squad was a very cool theme. Still annoyed I didn't pick some up on clearance when I was getting back into Lego. I have gone and got almost all of them now though. I should build them up sometime. I do however, need about 7 of those red antennae.

@DaLegoNerd1:
Two factions. Humans and bugs. The humans may wear different colors (like several LEGO Space themes), but they all have the same insignia. They also have individual names, so there's only six humans total.

Galaxy Squad was LEGO's take on the movie 'starship troopers'

By in Germany,

Ah, Galaxy Squad. Didn't have the firepower (aka money) to blast them off the shelves into my cart back then and the aftermarket has not made things easier in this regard either. Still, one of my favorite themes, Space or otherwise.

Apart from the magnificent 70708, this was the best bug-focused set hands down.

By in United States,

I got all four of the bug minifigs, and that's all I really wanted from this theme.

By in United States,

I think Galaxy Squad sort of worked as an unofficial tie-in to the 2013 Ender's Game movie, since they fight bug aliens in that one. But of course it's far more like Starship Troopers than like Ender's Game.

By in Turkey,

Humans had some nice machinery, but the meat of the theme was definetly the bug designs. What was I doing in 2013? I didn't even get a minifigure. Of all the sets my facorite is 70700 though. Compact and beautiful.

By in Poland,

The theme came out during my dark ages but I gotta say it looks great.

Another reminder it's been 11 years since the last proper Space theme (City Space is great, especially this year, but it lacks factions and conflict).

Gravatar
By in United States,

My biggest beef with the sub-theme was the trans-clear canopies on all the human vehicles. Just didn't feel "spacey" to me

^On the helmet visors, as well

I'm not even entirely sure what bug this is even supposed to be, but it's a glorious design

It's s big mutant space wasp or mosquito, in all likelihood. (Hence the name 'warp stinger'. I have to assume "wasp stinger' was deemed to be quite a tongue twister for a set name.)

...SO, JOIN THE MOBILE INFANTRY TODAY...(would you like to know more?...)

Seriously, I never did realize how much "Galaxy Squad" was sorta' 'Lego: Starship Troopers'...just with waaaaay bigger bugs...

As to 'the set', I have it...kinda' wish I didn't: it's as stable as five year old after a triple-espresso...wish I saved and gotten 'the Titan' instead 70709,,,puts the 'Wheee' in wheels (yes, I know: those are tracks/treads :D)

Many of the themes about this time were great. A lot of it was to do with them being short lived. Being small themes, the designers seemed to put all their ideas into them without holding back for the next year. Plus having everything from small sets and polybags to large (for the time) sets, there was something for all budgets. They were quite fresh in design, and you knew that if you didn't like one, then another totally different theme would be along in a year.

By in Netherlands,

So, I have a complex relationship with this set.

I originally bought one for half off, but I wasn't happy with how much space its wide thi design was takng up. It's also super rigid, to the point it' more like a statue. A tail like that would be cool if it could move at all, right? The pose of the legs is also not great for when it's in flight. So I sold it.

Antenna prices soared, years passed and I eventually got more of the theme, all blowing me away. Then I started to keep track of sets I used to own and now nostalgic I decided to keep an eye out. And I found one. Great price... MISB. Just two years ago!

So I have it again, and now that I usually build, disassemble and later build again its space isn't an issue anymore. It looks a lot better amidst the other GS sets and it looks beautiful, despite the aforementioned shortcomings. Those wings are so awesome!!!!

So all and all it's great and I now like it for what it is! Just display it for a while.

By in Philippines,

Probably the first set on rsotd that I own. I still have the bug ship partically assembled in a bucket somewhere.

I felt the same as you (and many others). The insect builds and figs are the stars of this theme- or all of Lego for that matter.

Initially, I was able to get this set and another slightly smaller build. I was hungry to get the rest. So, I bought the big spider bomber on BL.

Then, I spotted a bulk box for sale with a few obvious GS parts on top (the trans red canopies, trans purple pods, and lime green parts). I grabbed it for $20.

Turned out to contain ALL of the insect faction sets and figs for the entire range. All of the side builds were there. It was as if I got one half of a family collection. Perhaps one brother got the insects and the other got the Starship Troopers?

I got the cool brother's collection. There were even all of the little, red antennae for the Mosquitoids down in the creases of the box. One of my best Lego scores ever!

By in Germany,

I didn't even know that they still had a proper non-IP space theme back in 2013. I thought by then Star Wars had completely taken over anything space-related.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The unique color scheme and design of this thing are amazing. It's a bit weird that the bug is sitting out in the open but I guess he can handle it because he's an alien or there's a force field around him. It would've been nice if the roof closed and you could only see the pilot through the eyes, but it is a great set nonetheless.

Not at all. Late 2000s and early 2010s were very good for Space.

2013 had Galaxy Squad.
2011 had Alien Conquest.
2009-10 had SP3.
2007-09 had Mars Mission.

2011 also had Atlantis, in which the submersibles were essentially spaceships, just underwater. The landscape parts were less space like, but the vehicles were pretty decent for space.

My son did something like that, I think using the large technic ball joint and rotation joint pieces. They were strong enough to hold the weight in a similar pose but could be posed to flip the tail upwards more like a scorpion's tail. He also made the front legs to be a bit bulkier and flexible / with joints, and that made standing it up more secure.

There is Blue Team, Red Team, Green Team, and Orange Team. They all have the same Galaxy Squad logo on their torsos, but they also all have individual specialties. Red team specializes in speed as shown by their wing insigna. Green Team specializes in defense and staying in for the long haul as shown by their shield insigna. Orange Team and Blue Team are basically opposites, the Orange Team focuses on sheer firepower as shown by lightning bolt icon, while the Blue Team specializes on sniping and making the shots count as shown by their crossheir insigna. So, yes they are all human and have the galaxy squad symbol on their torsos, they also have their own unique factions that are cleary distinguished.

They're not different factions, they're departments within the same faction.

Same logic as saying classic space and Futuron are the same because they're both human, and have the classic space logo

What, ones like City, Friends, Dreamzzz, Ninjago, Monkie Kid, ...?

By in United Kingdom,

Things I never noticed before: the alien minifigure 's gun is made out of an upside-down scorpion.

I've had a fondness for the scorpion piece ever since I got my first one in 5938 Oasis Ambush, so I find that part use kinda cool ^^

By in United States,

Although I hate mosquitoes, the alien figure is well made and the red robot was really neat. very interesting head (maybe designed based on a bird since they are the speed team as @DaLegoNerd1 pointed out. He also had interesting weapons (at the time at least). I'm glad I picked it up.

@brick_r:
“Way bigger bugs”? Did you watch the movie?

@AustinPowers:
It certainly feels that way, but there have been sporadic Space themes every few years.

@CCC:
"5,000 feet! That's over 50 atmospheres of pressure!"
"How many atmospheres can the ship withstand, professor?"
"Well, it's a spaceship. So I'd say somewhere between zero, and one."

@DaLegoNerd1:
Other than minifig packs and CMFs, I’m not aware of any cases where the Classic Space logo appears on two or more different styles of uniforms in the same set, or even in the same wave. GS has six named humans in four uniform colors, all sporting the same logo. Different divisions of the same faction sounds exactly right, no different than Classic Space minifigs coming in several different colors themselves. Classic Space vs Futuron feels more like a generational thing, like the TOS vs TNG vs DS9 uniforms for Star Trek. Still the same faction, just at different times in history.
