Random set of the day: All-Terrain Vehicle
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6927 All-Terrain Vehicle, released during 1981. It's one of 6 Space sets produced that year. It contains 170 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$14.5.
It's owned by 4,219 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $299.00, or eBay.

Two space sets in a row!
This is a cool but weird set. Massive thrusters for engines on a ground vehicle? And why is the moon made of sand? Also, for an all-terrain vehicle, it's pretty low to the ground!
Yeah, all terrains except those with bumps.
So, with one plate of ground clearance, it'll tackle all types of terrain as long as that terrain happens to be a freshly paved road. Otherwise, it's fairly sleek. It's probably pretty fast, even while lugging around a big camper-shell.
That's a sexy beast <3
I have one more of these; inherited from a friend, well used, possibly pieces missing. I need to rebuild it and admire it
Every trans colour available at the time, at least 4 unique printed pieces, 2 minifigs of different stripes and —- wait, is that white one an owl!?
This set was also chosen as a featured set of the day: https://brickset.com/article/51285/featured-set-of-the-day-all-terrain-vehicle.
One of my favorite sets as a kid!
Ah yes, the vehicle that originally inspired the styling of the Toyota Previa minivan!
White Space Minifig with reverse tanks so they could sit in a seat. Got this new as a kid, still have it.
Fascinating set that's an interesting and unique transition between the blue and trans-yellow theme of the 1978-80 sets and the white and trans-dark blue theme of the 1981 ships like the Starfleet Voyager. It's also nicer looking in person - the trans-dark blue really sparkles against the white, and the blue of the little lab similarly pops next to the white.
Also, the functionality of dropping off and picking up the lab from the back of the rover is simple and ingenious.
Best Speed Champion Ever!
@SimonSpace70s: His tanks aren't on backwards...he broke his neck turning his head around to talk to red...:)
Also: I've heard of a glass-bottomed boat, but a glass-jawwed car? Rover? :|
Lastly: I remember seeing this set as a kid; liked the wheels (still do), but I'm in the (SPACE) camp as @MCLegoboy in thinking: "Shouldn't it have a higher/taller ground clearance..."

Tan was probably picked for photography because every color produced at the time would stand out against it. And our moon is coated in a fine powder called regolith. The NASA moon buggies posed a huge challenge because they couldn't have inflatable tires, but they had to be able to shed all the regolith that would get caught inside, and they had to be able to get traction. So they made them out of wire mesh with metal plates attached to the exterior to form treads.
@MeisterDad:
You can just see his left arm peeking around the tanks, and the elbow is below, where it belongs. Either he's a rebellious teenager who's wearing the airtanks backwards, or he's got the neck loop around his right hand.

No, the moon is actually made of cheese.
I had no idea this set existed but I like it, The shape of the vehicle is sleek and timeless.
It’s like someone slapped thrusters onto a Tesla Cybertruck. Just hope it works better than a Tesla Cybertruck…
One of my all time favorite sets. A 6x6 with dual turbo engines, sleek look and a portable control center at the back. The opening mechanism at the back also lifts the lab off the ground. You cannot offer enough to take it off my hands.

That's no moon! It's Arrakis!
Truly one of my all time favourite sets. I literally spent hours just looking at the main diaroma picture in the 1981 LEGO catalogue, as this was in the foreground. I couldn't wait to get my hands on that trans-blue inverted windscreen piece.
A stone cold classic.
I’ve told this story before but, having been too young for this while it was still in the Lego catalogue and focusing mainly on Town over the next few years, I suddenly decided in the late 1980s that I desperately wanted this. The chances of finding one pre-internet, without eBay and bricklink etc, were so much lower back then but somehow my parents managed to track down a complete boxed example through local newspaper classified advertisement.
Great set by the way. Its UK market name of Mobile tracking Station is a much better description in my mind.
One of the Classic Space sets I didn't have as a kid but bought quite early on via ebay, back when you could get amazing deals on old LEGO since no one seemed very interested even in near mint stuff. I remember finding 920-2 in almost mint condition including box for 15 Euro!
Alas, those times have long passed.
I got this set as a kid and it was just amazing! Dropping the "base" from the vehicle was just so satisfying :-)
Most intriguing Space set. This one and the beautiful 6929 Starfleet Voyager teamed up very nicely. As a child I loved that blue transparant window piece. Fond memories.
There's one almost finished on the desk next to me as I type this.

Do you count this as a six-wide or an eight-wide? The body's six studs wide, but the wheels add two studs of width.
I had this set when it released in my childhood, which along with 6890 were my favourites and we're built and rebuilt numerous times!
Happy days
My favourite classic space set of all time. Everything about this set is great!
Jangbricks' review back in the day when he did reviews of ALL classic space sets motivated my to buy this among four other sets.
I really do like it very much.
In my imagination, this is the workhorse of this exploritary space force. And it's no problem that it has so little ground clearance. That's what those big old rocket exhausts on the back are for.
I picked up this set when I came out of my dark ages back in 2005 to complete my Classic Space 1978-1981 collection. I don't recall if it was ever available in Australia at the time. It certainly wasn't on the shelves at my local Target in Camberwell as a kid! Great set!
A classic. I love the concept, design and execution of this set. Just zany enough to be fun, realistic enough that it stimulates the imagination on its role as a space vehicle. The use of slopes is masterful in making a good function, and it being an outpost and vehicle is always a great package.
I've got good memories of this one! It was the only Lego set in the house for my first five years of life, being displayed on my Dad's dresser. When I turned five, however, I received it and many other classic space sets inherited from my Dad and his brothers!

The cockpit is 6-wide, but the rest of the body is 8-wide. Including the wheels, it's 10- wide.
As a kid I always imagined they used the thrusters to jump craters.
This was such a favorite set. I loved having it pick up and drop off the tracking station. And I used the antenna as parking brakes.
Wish I still had it.

Nah, this is much sleeker than a Cybertruck. Probably safer to drive, too.

So it is; I hadn't noticed that.
Nothing like nostalgia to feature this set in the paid 2K Drive racing game.
Beautiful Futuron truck those classic Spacemen have stolen from the future.
Are you saying these Classics are Blacktron in disguise?
woah! 170 pieces and you get a vehicle and a (small) moon base! today a single speed champion has got about 300 pieces!
Lego at its best! <3
One of my favorite Classic Space sets. I think 1981 - 1984 were the peak years of the theme, with other fantastic sets all being from that period: 6929, 6950, 6980, 6890, 6971 and 6928.

So the vehicle is actually a spice harvester?

Wait, does that mean the aero tubes from LoM are actually...shed sandworm skins? Eh, the Fremen are shown to be pretty resourceful. I can buy that.
Looks more like an aircraft tug than an all-terrain vehicle...
I didn't have this set as a kid, but a few years ago a friend gave me a bulk lot of Lego he picked up second hand, and I found the parts for this in it. I was impressed by the "unloading" feature for the pod. Building it made me really appreciate the thought that went into it.
An interesting mix of the early grey/blue/trans yellow colour scheme and the white/trans blue. Nice set.
One of the first few Space sets I received back in the day. It was a Xmas present, but I found it in the drawer a couple of weeks before the big day so I'd sneak looks at the box whenever I could.
Not "all-terrain" in the slightest, but a great mobile remote base playset.
Fun fact: Because the white spaceman's tanks were always worn on the chest in order to fit in the seat, this is the only one of my original childhood space figures to have a near-perfect gold moon printing anymore!
