Random set of the day: Rally Car and Motorbike
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 673 Rally Car and Motorbike, released during 1978. It's one of 36 Town sets produced that year. It contains 65 pieces and 2 minifigs.
It's owned by 918 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $150.00, or eBay.

But I don't like the stickers that are across multiple pieces.
Having to replace a tire is nothing to get all bent out of shape over.
I can’t tell if that officer is assisting him or arresting him for running over one of the crowd.
That is one painful contortion. Not nearly as bad as the one he'd have to do to fit inside that car, though.
Old Backwards-Foot Joe was one hell of a mechanic and the town still misses him. Hmm? Oh no he didn't die, he just got tired.

But at least minifigures could ride them back then, which is more than can be said for the cars of that era.

I recently turned minifigure legs around to get a different minifigure in a microfighter cockpit. I recoloured 75125 in Aquasharks colours and put https://brickset.com/minifigs/aqu006 in. The helmet/backpack was too bulky for him to fit, so I turned his legs around.
He got off slightly better than https://brickset.com/minifigs/ww007 who I put into 75344. His hat didn't fit in the top space, so I swapped his legs out for a couple of Headlight bricks.

This was also done for 1497 Pitstop and Crew (1987)
I miss when they showed the minifigures building the models. Made them feel more alive, even with generic faces.
The car itself looks really cool. I'd love a modern rendition of it in something like 8-wide Speed Champions. It even has a livery that's kinda reminiscent of classic rally cars like the Lancia Fulvia or Nissan 240Z from the 60s and 70s.

There were already cars back then that could be driven like 640, 623, 621. I don't know why they kept making the ones that couldn't.
Sometimes the same set had driveable and non-driveable vehicles.
“AAAH! I DISLOCATED BOTH OF MY HIPS BY TRYING TO USE MY BODY AS A JACK TO ROTATE THE TIRES ON THIS CAR! AAAH!”

I'm assumong you meant 640-2, not 640, as 640 predates minifigures by several years. Funny that both sets that used that number were fire vehicles towing trailers.

it is pretty annoying when they do that

Hey, minifigs could skateboard just as easily on a vintage car as they could on a soapbox motorcycle.

The last time this was seen officially was on the back of 6105 in 1993 I think.
Probably doesn't work that well anymore with the increasingly complex deco on minifigs though.
And yeah the another set with the typical 1978 motorbike xD

Tired. Heh.
I guess a mechanic never retires, because then he's always changing one?
I think I had 644-2 back in early 80's. I remember the bike but not the colorful rally car. It was my go to toy back then. I wasn't a bike person (still not) but I loved to play with that thing. Maybe because you could fit the figure in. Of course I lost the pieces over time. I recently replicated the police car though.
One of my first childhood sets!

It was because children then (and now) have enough imagination to play with a vehicle without putting a driver in it, combined with parts efficiency to make the vehicle look good without worrying about making a big enough hole for a driver.
This was the first set I had that came with minifigs. Although I remember, even at that time, wishing that the man could sit inside the car. I had to wait another year or 2 for that to happen.
Really looks like he got caught in the act of stealing those tyres and being arrested
This is great! We never needed it to go further than this.

still in 6044 (1995)!
I wanted this set because of those legs backward... i think it was a new feature -_-'

I have enough imagination to figure out how to build side-by-side seating on a 6-wide vehicle.
I have this from my childhood! It still looks great! Love that rallycar!

This is one of the few times I've seen them do it. The others being 10243 (image 20) and Chen in 71741 .
And from the comments above (thanks for the contributions):
- @rd1899 : This was also done for 1497 Pitstop and Crew (1987)

- @pazza_inter : still in 6044 (1995)!

At least they don't do it any more.

Thank you for acknowledging that today's kids aren't a bunch of idiots who've had all the imagination sucked out of them by sitting in front of screens all day.

Don't you mean, "Rally looks..."?
Loved it, one of the first sets I owned with minifigures.
My first technic parts too, the bush and axel for the jack, I was in awe!
Still have it somewhere, although the STAMP have not survived so well….mmm…
I like those SNOT headlights using a fence. Simple but oh so effective!
Makes me wonder: Is the officer more concerned about the repair of the car, or getting the driver/mechanic to a hospital...:)

Yeah, it took me a minute to realize what I was seeing there.

Have you ever played LEGO Island 1?

Just out of curiosity what are those minifigs doing in those sets?
