Before the image loaded, I thought it was gonna be a Johnny Thunder based set lol

Gee, it looks so quaint compared to today's offerings from Ninjago, and this isn't even from its first year.

This one is good, the Legacy remake (71699) is much better.

"Uh, guys...I don't have any controls in this mech. Or armor."

The Nindroid mech gives me undeniable Exo-Force vibes

Quick Lore!!!

The Overlord took over computers and manufacturing from Borg Tower in Ninjago City!

Cyrus Borg invented Techno Blades that could hack machinery! He gave them to the Ninja!

Cole hacked a big robot-guard dude and Jay hacked a tank thing! They combine their vehicles for a power up!

QUICK LORE!!!

Well, this was from the theme’s first wave after its aborted cancellation, so that may have had something to do with it. On the one hand, we finally got the hairpieces for the Ninja. On the other, their designs for this wave all had plain legs.

Most other sets with Legacy versions you seem to prefer the original. I guess they did a good job updating this one.

Yes I do, which is weird, given my nostalgia for early Ninjago.

I do like that mecha, it’s just so simple yet effective

@PurpleDave:
Somebody (Jay most likely): "Um...yeah...don't worry about it, do your best, and you'll be fine..."
Cole: "You do KNOW I can hear you ALL laughing on the com, right...".:D

Fun thing I did; into the search I put "Raider" (and 'tuned' it to Ninjago) and did the same with "Bounty" (and likewise):
Raiders: 8 (9 counting the polybag version of its later set version)
Bounties: 7
Interesting...I guess they now need a "Bounty Raider", or the like.:)

By in Netherlands,

Great set. The mech and tracked vehicle on their own aren't the best vehicles out there, but it's great that they can be combined so they compliment each other (armor to the tracked vehicle and speed for the mech).

Too bad about what they did with the writing of Cole and Jay. That was one of my least favourite parts of rewatching the show when it became 10 years a few years ago. For those who don't know: inexplicable love triangle nobody asked for.

@Binnekamp:
Well, Nya is the Smurfette of the group. Kai is her brother, and Zane turned out to be a robot, so that’s the only reason all four weren’t falling over themselves to compete for her attention.

This set was fun to play with. My daughter was old enough at the time and I think she enjoyed putting the mech on the back and taking it off again.

I just wanted it for the tank treads.

Perfectly understandable.

One of the things I think this set does better than the remake is that Jay's vehicle transformation is a bit more substantial; the cockpit moves farther beyond just having the panels open so the silhouette changes farther. I also prefer the look of the combined vehicle when the claws on Cole's mech are wrapped around the sides (instead of laying on top) and its feet can be more easily positioned to resemble thrusters..

That said, this original version is a bit skeletal in retrospect, especially the tank with the exposed technic bricks, liftarms, and flat plating of the pull tab. Still, it was a pretty solid value for a $30 action set.

I actually can't think of any legacy set outside of the ultra sonic raider rendition that looks worse than the original. The Bounty 71705 and Zane's Titan Mech 71738 probably being the two best upgrades.

By in Canada,

@PurpleDave:...hmm...I think it helps your analogy that they change Nya's color from red to light blue?:) I'm also in the "triangle was forced camp", as I remember the episode where Pixal of all...people (yeah, I guess if Data is seen as 'an individual', then Zane, Pixal, and the like would probably be too) suggested Nya could choose Cole over Jay, based on 'strength'. Pixal of course did not take into account 'the bigger picture': Jay's not as strong as Cole, be I'd argue he is quicker, definitely smarter, and probably more creative; traits that Nya seem to favor (especially in herself:))
