Random set of the day: Surveillance Chopper
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6461 Surveillance Chopper, released during 1999. It's one of 63 Town sets produced that year. It contains 30 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 418 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $26.90, or eBay.

I wouldn't want to fly that tiny thing.
And it obviously doesn't have much power; It's almost touching the ground!
Reminds me of the movie Capricorn one
Its an old version of Peter!!!
Back before his arm got disintegrated.
Deadpool fans...
Well, if it's a surveillance chopper, at least the pilot has plenty of visibility!
It may be a Surveillance Chopper, but it also looks like one heck of a Head Chopper, too.
Weird how they made an exclusive torso for such a small set with limited availability...
Btw, that minifig was named "Batterby Schure" in the Time Cruisers comic, where he was portrayed as a somewhat dim-witted ruffian with whom his boss (Dr. Felix Combo) wasn't always too happy with.
Surveillance Chopper: 75201 Edition
The only of the sets of Launch Comnand not sold in the US and I own it
Hmm...a few parts (and a different 'paint job') away from being a COBRA F.A.N.G...or 007's 'Little Nellie'...

That never happened anymore. And anyone who skipped the end credits for DP2 must have been really confused during D&W.

Yes. I often leave the cinemas and don't stick around for the post credit scenes, but I did for DP2
Not gonna lie, thought this was a Blacktron set for a minute there
I swear this is the ugliest, non-juniorised helicopter they have ever done! Looks like a historical protottype. Previous ones in that price category at least managed to come with a canopy!
QUICK, TO THE PETERCOPTER!
Get away from that choppah!
@PurpleDave, one thing I want to say about our discussion last night: I was certainly NOT calling AustinPowers a liar, or even disagreeing with anything he said. I was just questioning your (flawed) reasoning why it was as he said it was.

Looking at 75201 and it's such a missed opportunity, like why not include the top half that can separate off as it does in the film as a play feature?
And as for 6461, were the designers challenged on brick count? I've seen better from 5 year old's MOCs

I think the designers were indeed challenged on piece count, as the money clearly went into the torso print (unique).
This is one of my earlier sets. It's nice that the minifig is unique to it, and I like the little details it has like the lights on the sides, the tail fin and light being present, the camera on the side and that they managed to work in a logo. It's not the greatest ever and it wasn't my favourite set or anything, but I definitely appreciate this for what it was.

No, Blacktron doesn't use helicopters; M-Tron does, as seen with 6923.

I’m not sure about that one. This was 1999, before the big losses forced them to re-examine their wasteful spending. On the one hand, they were kinda sparing with new prints back then, but on the other, they were known to regularly order new molds, or new colors of pre-colored ABS and only use them in a single set. I could see them producing this torso for a single set without really considering the financial impact, or factoring it into the MSRP of the set. I’m not saying that’s what happened, just that it seems plausible.
My rofl copter go swoosh swoosh swoosh
Reminds me of the Gyro-Captain's vehicle in The Road Warrior. Unofficial Mad Max set?

LEGO first posted a loss in 1998 and it made headlines around the globe, so I'd say by 1999 the realized the ship needed rightening, but they just didn't know how yet. Either that, or they thought '98 was a fluke so they kept doing what they were doing and hoping for the best for a few years until it became impossible to ignore. By 2000 / 2001 they had serious offer from Mattel they were considering up until the point Bionicle blew away all expectations and saved the company!

Yeah but M-Tron have that delightfully distinctive red colour scheme, this black and white arrangement is far more Blacktron II

I didn't quite mean it seriously ;) more like a comment on today's overvaluing of minifigs. On the other hand, you really wonder why this design is so bad compared to older ones.

I wasn't saying that this set was M-Tron, only that they're the only Space faction known to use helicopters.

Probably scared to go into actual space. Everyone else has all kinds of guns, and they've got...magnets.
