Random set of the day: The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 76001 The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase, released during 2013. It's one of 11 DC Comics Super Heroes sets produced that year. It contains 368 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$39.99/£39.99.
It's owned by 7,700 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $63.50, or eBay.

Two banes today!
The Bat: Definitely a decision made. I know that Heath Ledger's death kind of put a wrench in Christopher Nolan's plans for the followup to The Dark Knight, but Dark Knight Rises made a few odd choices, and one of them was this vehicle. LEGO trying to spruce it up with some blue at least makes it a fun looking toy, but still a rough design to work with.
I'd love to know what those barriers are gonna do to stop the armored assault vehicle or the wacky flying machine with propeller hands.
Did Bane steal Batman's vehicle and paint it tan? No wonder he's a villain!
I really loved this set.
The Bat was an awkward vehicle, sure, but they did their best, and produced a perfectly serviceable toy from the design -- and the cockpit is large enough to seat two heroic characters, which is rare.
Meanwhile, we got a Tumbler that kind of fits on Lego City streets.
Have this set...haven't built it...which is a shame: I have 7888: The Tumbler: Joker's Ice Cream Surprise, and I would love to put the two Tumblers nose-to-nose ala 'a game of chicken', because the first Tumbler is MASSIVE compared later versions...
Oh, @WolfpackBricksOfficial, 'half' your statement/'guess' is correct: in "Dark Knight Rises", Bane and crew bust into Waynetech's (secret) R&D storage facility...where three Tumblers were stored 'pre-repaint' ('Desert Tan'). He uses them to patrol Gotham, after declaiming Marshal Law (oh, and overthrowing the city government).
i remember someone on ebay listing the bane tumbler as a speed champions set once

"I only work in tan. And sometimes very, very dark beige."
@MCLegoboy:
Are you dissing the Lobstercopter? The only Dark Knight trilogy vehicle I don't like is the version of the Tumbler that has the giant cannon, because you can see the thing bouncing up and down as it drives. Zero chance of accuracy with that thing.
@SideSalad:
In the film, they were more intended to keep civilians from attempting to flee the city and get everyone killed.
@Zordboy:
10-wide at the rear tires is about as accurately scaled as you're going to get against 6-wide standard for civilian vehicles.
@brick_r:
Uh, yeah. The first one was 18-wide, not counting the flick-fire missiles. I think roadplates maxed out at 20 studs width for the street. It was big enough that it should have included some sort of rec room or spa in the back.

Back to two days ago, Simon was the source for the post-WWII stuff (and even if German industry got back in shape in just a few years, there's still a few years there where toys are simply not going to be a priority for local businesses). @AustinPowers frequently laments the fact that TLG no longer caters specifically to German tastes, including no longer featuring German aesthetics in City/Train sets. So, again, it kinda sounds like you're saying he's lying, unless you've blocked his comments and are completely unaware of this history.
There is a certain degree to which The Bat's design makes it look like it was born in the dark...
The first 'proper' Nolan Trilogy set (the 2008 ones have a Nolan style Batman and a tumbler, but that's where it ends. It was quite an odd set at the time back in 2012 as all other DC Superheroes sets were either general Batman sets, that one Superman set (that also tied into a new Lego Super Heroes game) or Marvel (which was just The Avengers and one X-Men set I recall. And then there's this lone movie tie-in.
It was cool that they made it but in my opinion it suffers a bit from being cartoonified like the other DC SH sets. Fotunately that's mostly in the stickers and in the more colorful use of brighter parts.
Man... to think Super Heroes would continue to exist for what seems like indefinitely is a bit disheartening. Fom the start the builds were secodary to the minifigs (although this is one of the better ines in that regard). The sets have never reached too high a bar except for some cases. Eventually DC at least switched to a better standard for models, but right now it's been nothing but Batman for years on DC's end. And I mean only a Bat-vehicle from a specific surce material with Batman himself with the occasional Joker or in rare cases another villain or Robin. IMHO the Lego Batman Movie was the peak unless you really wan certain batmobiles.
Ah, the set where the stickers in the product images (and on the box) don't match what was in the box as seen in the review from Brickset. Doot doot.
I wish we got more varied DC sets again... Hoping that someone sets get made for James Gunns upcoming superman movie.
Never really got much into the Superheroes theme.
Wished they did more of the classic simple but vibrant comic stuff (I think that fits way better to the Lego system) than all this modern movie tie-ins. Mix that with some simple City-esque buildings (so they blend in well with your City and Modular buildings...), vehicles and a few cops and random crooks and I'd be way more into this.
Gotta say though I really like it when they find alternative uses for the 1999 X-wing canopy - I really like that piece. Would have been cool though if came in a different color.

"Speed Champions looks at the mere ten studs' width of this cute little Tumbler, and considers it a family-car. Monkie Kid and Chima consider it a halfway-decent shopping-trolley, or maybe a suitable stroller for the elderly and infirm.
Ninjago doesn't consider it at all.
Tumblebee here is adorable and goofy, as is this entire set. That is not a bad thing. I like it a lot, I think I might pick it up on the aftermarket or just BL the parts."
"Tumblebee" - love it
Both of these vehicles need remakes in minifigure and UCS scale.
I remember getting this for like 50% off, I wasn't even into Nolan Batman but I thought the set was super cool
I like the "Bat" in some big collector set

I actually bought black, blue and dark grey pieces and the sticker sheet to build the proper color tumbler exactly for that reason. Having a bat vehicle that fits on the streets instead of one the size of a semi was a big win.
But the color for this was wrong for Batman after looking at film reference. Source:

The Tumbler already exists in UCS scale…twice, with 76023 and 76240. I don’t expect the camo version would sell nearly as well as black, and judging by how quickly v2 retired I don’t think it was a smash hit. Probably too many people saying, “I already got that,” after buying v1.
@markisnot:
To be fair, the camo Tumbler was Lucius’ doing, not Batman’s. No defense for the Lobstercopter color scheme, though.

It came in trans-blue in 6773 and white in 4502 and 7598. I'm sure there have been other recolors, but those came immediately to my mind.

So adorable in fact that I am gonna build it in black. Uses a 4 wide vehicle base and easy to find parts.
I thought the Bat looked really cool actually. I guess I was alone in that. The LEGO version did a decent job of making a toy out of it. But I did always want to build my own MOC. But I'm too far separated from the movie now, so probably doesn't matter.
I remember having this set, but sold it. Tan Tumbler build was great. The Bat, was hard to make sense of. Source material resembles the Tumbler halfway transforming into .. a drone? The ratchet joints w/ fans at the end made this hard to distinguish between a static-bodied vehicle and something like a mech.
The Dark Knight Rises is the only one of the Nolan/Bale Batman movies I haven't seen, and if you told me this Batwing was made up for toys I would probably believe you. Still, I'm kind of surprised it's never been remade, Batman vehicles seem like the only DC sets that are viable for Lego, and it would be an opportunity to make Catwoman, re-do Bane, and maybe even give a movie Batman eyes, for once.
I wish the little Batmobiles that Lego includes in larger sets were released by themselves, I like them better than the usual enormous single-seaters.

The Alpha Team set looks like it uses a different piece to me, with un-ratcheted hinges.
...I'm starting to feel old. This set is 11 years old but this set uses some pieces I still consider "new-ish," like the 2x4 plates, the double cheese slopes, the roof brick with a chunk cut out... the set definitely *looks* like an "11 year old set" in terms of its build, but the pieces used feel anachronistic even though no, those parts did come out that long ago, COVID just destroyed my sense of time that 2010s Lego feels like it should be relatively recent.

Same.
my nephew was playing with the tumbler and 'tumbling' it all over the house (making the name appropriate). it didn't loose a single piece. I was really, really impressed. the build is incredibly solid.

The tiles, Dave. You know what I mean.

You're right, I had the wrong Alpha Team set. I was thinking of 6774. Bricklink lists it as coming in five colors: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?id=410&idColor=1&ccName=4208222T=C&C=1

I kinda wondered (I honestly could not find anything described as a "2x4 plate" besides 3020 in the BL inventory), but I had to ask to be sure. Especially since the set also includes the 1x3 tile, which you didn't mention (and which I was pretty sure came later, though apparently both were 2010).
