Made from recycled dinosaurs.

This set is a little rudimentary compared to some modern City sets but I still love its color-coded recycling bins.

By in New Zealand,

One of my favourite City sets from its golden era. I never got it though, because it was a limited release set.

By in Australia,

I tracked this set down a couple of years ago because I regretted not buying it when it was available originally. I really like it. The truck's a nice build, the forklift is a nice build, and the bin collection area is just lovely background scenery for a Lego city.

I swear, I recognize every 2012 set from the catalogues except this one.

This set was an exclusive release set in many countries, including NZ and wasn't shown in the general consumer catalogue.

Three recycling bins, three minifigs. They’re going green. Soylent Green.

By in United States,

I still have this set. Just yet to find a space for it in my new city layout.

By in United States,

I love any LEGO vehicle that you can stack little containers on the back of.

By in Turkey,

This set looks so modern I wouldn't notice it's age even if saw it in stores today. Nicely done.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I remember this!
As stated by others unfortunately it was a store exclusive so basically non existent in Australia.
I HATE store exclusives. Sometimes there were Target exclusives (USA) so if wew were lucky the sets could turn up at Target Australia.

This set was from when City was good.
Great minifigures that can be used in any situation (rather than specific to this set or specific to a certain personality or era). The telehandler is especially nice.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The minifigs seem to have picked their predominant torso colours based on the colours of the recycling bins, that's nice coordination there guys!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I think it holds up to recent versions. Well made!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I managed to pick this up in E LeClerc in France in 2014.
The recycling bin set up was almost identical to the one that was outside the store too!
Great set, one of my favorites to be honest.

Seems a bit over the top needing a fork lift truck to lift up recycling bins, usually the truck has a crane to do the job, but guess adds to the play value. Just strange there are no pieces to recycle and the wheelbarrow is a bit odd as well!

Limited to Walmart in the USA, which is to say it was widely available.

Just as long as you don’t start singing terrible tunes with your family, Partridgeheart.

By in Netherlands,

I remember when this came out. Those double-sided car roof parts used at the top of the bins were either new or very recent at the time I recall. But for me this set was most well remembered for one thing:

Bottles!

Yes, lego bottles debuted in this set (maybe amongst others) in City after appearing in the Pirates of the Carribean line with ship prints and in (the old) trans. black in most of the line in 2011 (presumably empty ones). Here they were just regular old bottles of possibly the alcoholic variety albeit not officially. I recall this being a bit controversial back in the day. I guess it's different if it's in a movie license, but come winter 2012 this was the only set that wasn't PotC until later in the year it would appear in LotR/The Hobbit, Star Wars and two Direct to Consumer sets, the Haunted House and the Kingoms Joust.

I never got this set or anything, it just stuck to me the most. That, and Princess Tamina's hairpiece being used for a City minifig for some reason. Back then most City minifigs were very generic, so that was something unusual too.

Oh, and I'm not even a parts guy. These things just stuck with me for some reason.

It's a nice little set. This was probably the golden era of City.

You should be more upbeat and optimistic about things; go big people up, Encourageheart!

Nice set and really glad I grabbed a copy but it's from the era when the stickers degraded quite quickly, so it has lost some of it's lustre.

Just don't get into any teleporters with any unintended hitchhiking insects, Mergeheart.

(It doesn't quite work, but it was the best I could come up with. It was almost a Bridgeheart too far...)

By in Hong Kong,

Fantastic looking set that I missed initially but grabbed it later when the chance came up. The colours are a joy; all nice primary type colours, not all those newfangled colours that Lego has been forcing upon us lately. I agree with the person who said this set doesn't look its age at all!

Or its City, subtheme construction, and he likes to play German infrastructure. Hence, Carolabridgeheart.

P.S.: Disappointing how "ABRIDGEHEART" isn't abridged =(

Rudimentary? You're joking, right?
This has so much more detail and is so much more realistic and fleshed out than many that came later. The truck even has opening doors, a rarity these days.
Those were the days before LEGO started cheaping out on everything.

Plus, this at least looks like a proper recycling truck does in the real world. Compare it for example with something like 41712, which is a total fantasy vehicle. It might have a fun play feature (I've got the set myself), but in terms of realism it fails completely.

I took it as the truck is delivering the bins to a collection centre in Lego city. I never thought it was actually collecting the full recycling bins.

The signposts would seem to indicate a spot where recycling is dropped off, although obviously the truck then has to deliver the full bins to a recycling center.

By in United States,

@Binnekamp:
The PotC usage was a literal ship-in-a-bottle (as in, that was the real Black Pearl and other tall ships, magically shrunk down inside of regular bottles). While the bottles very likely would have held booze in their original usage, there's no indication of that within the scope of the film series. They were also clear, not trans-black.

This bottle has appeared with five different prints. Two are ship-in-a-bottle (one from PotC4, the other from PotC5). The third just shows grapes, which _could_ be wine, but could just as easily be grape juice (sparkling or otherwise). Fourth is the "Drink Me" bottle from 71012-7, so definitely nothing as mundane as alcohol. And the fifth was a message in a bottle, which quite likely did start out holding liquor of some sort, speaking from a historical perspective. But there's nothing that overtly indicates any of these bottles were certainly containing alcohol, like printing "XXX" on the bottle. And there's nothing that indicates they didn't. I think whichever side of the argument an individual AFOL ended up on says more about them than the actual intentions of the set designer.

@Brickalili:
I am. I'm upbeat and optimistic about the fact that I never want to hear what that sounds like.

That’s not totally fantasy. Multi-Stream Recycling Trucks are common in the United States (not in my region, but I’ve seen them elsewhere). See thisbone for example: https://intercongreen.com/2014/12/06/testing-the-numbers-on-recycling-of-recyclables/img_0457/

Nah. Certainly in French towns they have bins for recycling that look a bit like the ones in this set. There’s then a truck for collecting the recycling that’s like a big container with separate compartments. The crane on the truck then picks the bins up and a flap in the base opens to release the contents into the correct compartment. I once toyed with making one. Never came to fruition though…
