Random set of the day: Tantive IV
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 10198 Tantive IV, released during 2009. It's one of 36 Star Wars sets produced that year. It contains 1408 pieces and 5 minifigs, and its retail price was US$149.99/£122.99.
It's owned by 6,094 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $332.40, or eBay.

This is the first ship we ever see in Star Wars. It's a very iconic ship from the very iconic opening scene.
Fun fact: The Tantive IV design was originally meant to be the Millennium Falcon, but i'm glad it wasn't.
Man, this model would actually hold up surprisingly well today.

I agree. 75244 is still better, but this one could pass as a new set if you swap out the minifigs for up-dated ones, as long as you don't look at the model too closely.
This could have been the Millennium Falcon, if it hadn't been for a show called Space: 1999.
Wasn't this ship just intercepted?
I like it. I think this one’s excellent. Awesome that we’ve had quite a few random SW minifigs this week, and then to top it off with this set.

I have both sets, but have never bothered to open or build the newer version. The old one looks great.
75244 is one of those great deals I was able to snag for nearly 50% off just as they were retiring the set, like 75222 and 75098 .
I wonder if we'll see deals like that again with 75290, 75313, and 75192 potentially nearing the end?
Come to think of it, I did get 75290 last year in good, used condition, complete with the box for only $150.

The Cantina and the AT-AT are retiring at the end of this year.

Yep. Might be worth a visit to the ol' Lego store sometime after Xmas just before (or shortly after) the retirement date.
My local store is particularly interesting because they also serve as the regional clearing store for damaged boxes which gets you an additional discount.
I remember being mesmerized by this set back in 2009, always looking at the pictures on the website.
I don't have too many display sets, but I would love to see this on my shelf. I rather prefer play sets, smaller and easier to store. That way I can switch my display from time to time. I don't have infinite space.
No rebel friend? ;)
Got both this and 75244, and despite the ten year difference this one really holds up. Bit stockier and chunkier, sure, but they’ve got the right enough shape with some great detail
Oh, the price! Would buy this in no time today. Maybe they should release a 1400 piece playscale version again?
One of my favourites. Still have a spare boxed one. Yay!
Can you get nostalgic for a set you never had?
I really wish I'd been able to afford this at the time. This was near the end of my parents' years-long LEGO ban so there's a chance that, if I've saved up for it, they might've relented.
I'll settle for the midi-scale one that came out this year, though.
Ah, the 10 year anniversary of Lego Star Wars. That was quite a special lineup. The first tauntaun, the first Endor Bunker, the first Home One play set (as voted on by fans), the first minifig scale Tative IV... what a year! And The Clone Wars was still going on too, only in its second year.
This one was an 'exclusive' back then. I have a catalog from Shop @ Home from back then with it on one of the last pages. Great set!
Fun fact: this was the last year of black dot-faced minifigs. After this they would only appear in modular buildings, and even later only TLM sets and deliberste recreations of retro minifigs.
Still, they appeared in Star Wars for a full ten years! This Leia is barely changed from the yellowfig that debuted in 2000 except for now being a fleshie.
I always choose to go to bed early on days that there's a Star Wars set!
I have the variant of this set with the smooth Leia hair. Not sure why that was ever done, but it was. Honestly, I don't hate it, but it feels a bit not of the times especially when there was a detailed version that predated it, and it was redesigned in 2011 anyway.
IMO best Tantive.
I only have 75244 and one thing I quite like about it is that you can display it standing upright on its engines. Looks like you can do the same with this.

It’s beyond me how the Eagle Transporter has never been made as an official set. I would gladly pay $500 for. Minifig scale version.

On a guess, they probably missed a detail pass on one or more mold cavities. BL refuses to acknowledge that it’s not a short shot, in spite of multiple people with experience in the plastics industry telling them it’s a perfectly crisp shot off a cavity with less detail. But I’ve seen at least one in person, with the normal version next to it for comparison, and it honestly looks like they roughed in the shape of the hair and just never cut the hair texture. A related possibility would be that they fed an incomplete file into the CNC mill, and it thought that was the finish pass.
@starkllr:
It wasn’t a huge hit when it was in broadcast, and a lot of the fans have probably passed away. Plus, it’s not exactly an easy model to design, though some have certainly tried.

Leia's smooth hair is something like rare misprint. Search sw0175a on a Bricklink. If it is as you write, it means you have a minifigure worth $300 and I'm not joking. Same with alternative sw0113a from 6212.
I have 75244, but I will always prefer the front cockpit windows in this set.
@MusiMus:
Interesting. I’d only ever heard of this set coming with a smooth-hair Leia, and checked some time ago to confirm that I did _not_ get that version. Now I gotta go check the Hoth Leia that I pulled out of that X-Wing, too.
I did own this and sold it for no more than 150€, still sealed with the chance of the legendary and priceless Leia hairpiece. Not the most clever move in my life. Despite the potential loss, this is a killer set and I would love to have this in my collection. Again. And with all the new movies and series, it will take ages for Lego doing this ship ever again.
@yamaki:
Averaged out over the probability it did contain a smooth-hair Leia, the minute bump in value would have been more than offset by the loss in value due to popping the seals. It’s a bit like having someone offer to buy an unscratched scratch-off lottery ticket for 10x the purchase price. Unless you _know_ there’s one ticket left, and the big jackpot hasn’t been claimed yet, it’s still a pretty good “win” to sell it and let the other guy take the risk.

Holy time machine! My brothers and I had that ship as a toy. I never knew where it came from. Maybe I was a bit young?
"They" can call it whatever '"they" want (unlike "Boba Fett's Ship"/"Firespray":()...this will always be the "Rebel Blockade Runner", as that's what Kenner can waaaaay back (wish I got that die-cast, but it was BIG...for the time-period)...
