Random set of the day: Fire Patrol Copter
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6657 Fire Patrol Copter, released during 1985. It's one of 24 Town sets produced that year. It contains 66 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 3,863 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $47.10, or eBay.

Looks like it has about the capacity to put out a campfire. One that was properly built, and already starting to die down.
I always enjoy seeing those old rotor and two-bladed propeller pieces pop up,
Out of the 24 Town sets produced in 1985, IMO this is the worst of the lot. There was a lot of good stuff back then.

WHAT?! You take that back! This was my favorite Town set from 1985! Actually, my only 1985 Town set. I was more into Space (and 3 3/4" G.I. Joe).

There were very good space sets back them. I was into space at the very beginning: 1978-1980. Then I moved on to Technic almost at the same time. By 1985 I had already entered my first dark age and was all over everything 'computer'. I was dabbling in cp/m back then; even before DOS!
But if it hurts you so much then ok, it was a very good set!

It's a patrol helicopter, so when it sees a fire it reports it and the bug guns then come in.
How many fire copters did Lego made?
Just rebuilt this set from my childhood. Great set.
I loved LEGO helicopters as a kid. I had this set. One day I was playing outside with it, and a part popped off and fell into the grass. I spent what felt like the next hour (probably really only five minutes) looking for it until I found it.
Never played with LEGO outdoors again.

Twenty.
That's just a guess, I'm going to research it and report back...
Edit: Twenty-one! Six in Town, fourteen in City, and one in Boats- 4031 Firefighter.
Dang, I'm good! ...or lucky.
It's a proper set. I think it still has a chance today.
Guy inside is just glad he gets a roof so he isn’t at risk of losing his head like all those mini-chopper pilots
It's a great set, lots of the parts were new that year. Looks good next to 6697.
Does suffer slightly from using the same combination of hinged roof panel, windscreen and doors that was featured on just about every Lego road vehicle for fifteen years, and on a good few other helicopters too.
It's a decent improvement over previous helicopters with the then-new plane nose convex slope piece and the use of slopes helps greatly with the shape.
I also like the shaping the hoses bring.
That said, by 1985 Town started to ascend from being primitive in places, so this one isn't as great as some others from that year. It's mainly because of the cab piece and windshield making part of it look like the cars of the era.

Hobbes is right though: 1985 was a very strong year for town.

You forgot 4967 10957 10970
I had its older brother 6685 (as well as his contemporary friend 6697).
Have this one! It always seemed quite unique to me, back then it felt like every helicopter had a similar build, with a just a hinged windscreen/inverted windscreen combo as the front. Even when looking back now, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was. But this one was different, with those "plane" pieces for the nose. Looks a bit weird, but I still like it!
Main downside was that landing gear.....it always was kinda fragile to begin with, and those pieces didn't really keep their clutch power.

I had it as a kid and absolutely adored it - still do! It's pure Lego from that time, with so many awesome elements! The front slope, the window, the car doors, the hose on the side, the COOLEST firemen logo ever done, it's a fantastic set.
"No fires to be had, let's fix that."
*Starts up the flamethrower*
(That is what that is, right?)

You're right, I forgot DUPLO! D'oh!

I loved this one as a kid! Only nowadays there are too many helicopters...
I have this one. Really liked the new streamlined look for the helicopters back then.

You're right, I forgot DUPLO! D'oh!"
But if you forgot DUPLO when assuming 20, then you were guessing the number of non-Duplo fire copters, so you were still only one off.

Agreed! I have two of these in my collection, mainly because my sister got one and I got one so we wouldn't squabble. 30 years later I got them both :)

Did you ever combine the two, and cast your GI Joes as giants that your spacemen had to fight off?

https://brickset.com/sets/tag-Fire-Helicopter lists forty-seven sets, one each in Boats, Bricks and More, Explore, Juniors and Technic, two each in Creator an Education, eight each in Duplo and Town and twenty-one in City.
As seen in the movie Big (1988) in a rotating display in the foreground during a scene where Josh plays Photon with another kid in FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue! Around time stamp 00:36:40. 6697 (along with a fair few other sets and custom buidlings) also appears.
@TheOtherMike In 1983, I built a Lego Skystriker (G.I. Joe's version of the F-14 Tomcat), and the pilot was Kenner's Squid Head from Return of the Jedi.
But I mostly didn't mix toys like that.
My first ever Lego set! I was amazingly fond of this one.
Phenomenal that the head, helmet and legs of the minifigure in this set are still in production after 40 or so years, and were it not for the print, the torso too! (Yes, I know those parts date back to the late ‘70s, not 1985).
This today...Kai was a MotD a couple days ago...the RSotW...Brickset appears to be 'on fire'...:D

The helmet isn't *still* in production. It went out of production decades ago, and a new mold that had a less fragile chin-strap was created in 2019 for the TLM2 sets. I remember thinking that they could alter the mold for Benny's helmet in the TLM1 sets to create a more durable, but uncracked Classic Space helmet, and I was *so* happy to see them actually do that.
I liked this one as it looked more like a Bell Jetranger compared to most of the other LEGO helicopters which had more of a bubble canopy style. The only other one that I can think of off the top of my head was the one that appeared in 6392 Airport.

Yes, I know. I remember when the first minifigures were released in the late ‘70s and I have several copies of 70841 Benny’s Space Squad from 2019. It was a roundabout way of saying that classic designs persist (even if they’re slightly modified such as the reinforced chinstrap).

And the heads’ switch from solid stud, to Y-block stud, to recessed stud, to the occasional I-block stud…

Sure, but essentially the same. Changes to the head stud and helmet’s chinstrap are only known to aficionados like us. The general appearance is unchanged.
