Random set of the day: Stormer 2.0
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 2063 Stormer 2.0, released during 2011. It's one of 27 HERO Factory sets produced that year. It contains 31 pieces, and its retail price was US$7.99/£7.99.
It's owned by 2,230 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $39.30, or eBay.

At first glance I thought it said Stoner :skull:
Nice outfit, the 2.0 designs were my favourite apart from the animal ones.
Idk why I got into collecting these guys, I guess I was just at the right age and I felt bad about missing most of Bionicle. A nice introduction to the new CCBS, pretty forgettable sets otherwise - the main thing that I dislike about this particular wave is how all six heroes have color-swapped heads that are only distinguishable by their headgear. It makes them even more "seen them once, seen them all" than Bionicle was.
Hero factory the day after a Bionicle set! What a nice pair.

Gotta admit, I was surprised to find out how many different versions they made of some of these characters. Apparently a lot more sets got produced than I was ever aware of.
I still remember Lego saying that Hero Factory would have this revolutionary new style of articulation. Then the first wave of HF sets were basically Agori, and I was like, "This is not the revolution we were promised." Then Hero Factory 2.0 came out, and I was like "That's more like it!"

The obvious question becomes which would win in a fight?
Man Huwbot's had it out for me these last few days huh.
I'll keep it quick
Preston Stormer was a hero working for the HERO Factory. In his youth he notably saved New Stellic City during the same fight where Von Ness deserted the organization.
He eventually became the leader of Alpha Team, HERO Factory's most prestigious unit.
During the second year of the story HERO Factory developed a new method for upgrading heroes to make them more adaptable to missions. When a bunch of villains with fire based attacks attacked an oil rig/power plant, the heroes were updated to their 2.0 forms and given ice based weaponry to calm the flames. Stormer was already the ice-elemental on the team so this didn't affect much.
Shout out to how the TV show handled Stormer's fight with Fire Lord though. It tackled the topic of "cop arrests a drug addict" with a lot more tact, civility, and maturity than a lot of adult shows do. He wasn't a bad guy, he wasn't evil, but he needed to stop before he hurt himself or others, and Stormer was very gentle and understanding in trying to calm him down. Any other show would've just had the heroes blast him with every laser weapon they had, so I appreciate the more diplomatic take.

The comment of the day! I also thought it was too, but that just makes it more funnier. Lol

You’d think Umbra, given he can move at light speeds, shoot lasers and create hard light constructs…but he was canonically taken out by a guy with ice powers, which also appears to be Stormer’s whole deal so it might be close

I dunno man-unless you’ve signed one the rest of us don’t know about, it’s not like you’re contractually obliged to do a lore dump on every Bionicle, Hero Factory, or Ninjago set or figure that gets featured.

I thought the Animal ones were 3.0?
"Everybody freeze!"
~Preston Stormer probably.
Preston Stormer was my first CCBS set shortly after Waspix. It was given to me by an acquaintence who learned I like lego.
It's... forgettable as a design. There is no backside, the head fels like an evoltionary dead-end and the weapon is not very interesting. I like the cord though. I was grateful for it as a gift and kept it around. And with the excellent Waspix this gave me some options to build things with the new system. Eventually the ball on CCBS really started rolling for me and I have come to love the system a lot.
Right now I'm warm on this set. It reminds me a bit of a stormtrooper and the tool-shield is unusual at least, helped by the cord and strange blue rubber spears. I also appreciate the light on the helmet as it gives a dash of color. Finally, the shell placement might be one of the better ones for the subtheme. Plenty of coverage.
Overall a huge step forward from the 2010 heroes, but they wouldn't really come to ther own until the summer wave or especially the 2012 wave.
That's not BIONICLE = not Lego!!
Edit: Those HF minifigs are bad ass.
Probably one of the higher "eyeball value" sets of the 2.0 line due to the hose. Solid, though the choice to introduce CCBS with no form of back covering was a miss. Honestly, it was a complete miss to not have the shields be arm-mounted and have it so you could clip them to their backs, but the requisite piece to pull that off wouldn't come until 2012.
The biggest failing I found with these guys (even at the time) were the heads - visor gimmick aside (though Stormer definitely got one of the better ones, compared to the impractical Nex and goofy Furno) the head mold itself felt like a goofier step back from the Glatorian heads and, most importantly, were cast in opaque colors and outright ignored the light piping function of giving Constraction characters colorful eyes/heads in the first place. At least they changed their minds pretty quickly, going back to Glatorian heads in 2012 and using a new blank transparent head piece in 2013. Unfortunately, that would be the death of proper light piping, as despite Bionicle G2's attempt to go back to the roots of a separate head piece and eyestalk piece, the design of those parts did a very poor job of actually carrying light through the eyes.

Even if Stormer lost in a complete blowout, he'd still have plenty of taunt material. "Hey, what was that tiny blip? Oh, that's right, it was your role in your storyline!" And, of course, if it were a battle that let them tag-team their other forms in, Umbra would be outnumbered, and he'd eventually have to deal with 6230.
