Random set of the day: Passenger Carriage / Sleeper
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 7815 Passenger Carriage / Sleeper, released during 1983. It's one of 9 Trains sets produced that year. It contains 228 pieces and 2 minifigs.
It's owned by 754 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $345.20, or eBay.

What a coincidence, it's time for me to go to bed!
A train minifigure on RMotD yesterday, a train on VSotW a couple days ago and this train here today.
Is Huwbot trying to tell us something? That bot works in mysterious ways.

Heh. I'm so used to @Maxbricks14 getting the first comment that I immediately started looking up the time in New Zealand.
It's so sad RPotD doesn't run right now, because we already got planes and trains today. All we needed was something from an automobile, and we'd have the whole trifecta!
Excellent. Loved the BR Blood and Custard livery. Reminds me of my first Hornby clockwork train set!
Relaunch and I'd buy a few.

Random set of the day always conveniently posts in the afternoon here, which is when i'm free most of the time. And it means I don't need to stay up late like you Americans have to.
That's also why you find my comments in most other articles far down the chain, as I'm fast asleep.
Man, I've really been sleeping on this one

Did the passenger carriage arrive late?
Fun fact, this set and 7819 Postal Container Wagon are add ons for 1980’s 7740 Inter-City Passenger Train Set

Yes, but depending on work schedule, there absolutely are people who go to bed at 4pm.

I was specifically meaning me.
Are there really no differences between those 1980-1986 train magnets and the later ones from M:Tron?
40 years old and still looking beautiful to me. I have the 7740 , but not this and the Postal Container Wagon. I don't feel bad for misisng them because I have a bigger problem than that, the tiny clips on the rail pieces became so brittle over time, I can't lay the rail road.

Yeah, but I don’t know what your work schedule is, so how would I know when you go to bed?

From what I've just told you.
And we have the audacity to complain about modern stickers not matching the exact shade of colour of the host brick.

Why? What has the current sticker colour match issue have to do with this set? It doesn't even include any stickers. All the decorations in this set are prints.
If you meant the two-tone doors that look off in the set image, that's just a case of bad lighting in the photo.
I have this set myself, and even after all the decades the printed red areas on the lower part of the doors matches the adjacent red bricks perfectly.

Funny, I always considered it Lego's interpretation of the Trans-Europ-Express livery, weinrot and beige. But considering the proportions of the cars, might as well be BR....
But glorious times, when you could buy a train car without having to buy a whole bunch of other stuff with it.

I always saw Deutsche Bahn in those colors. Like here: https://www.waz-online.de/lokales/wolfsburg/deutsche-bahn-intercity-aus-den-80ern-faehrt-von-wolfsburg-an-die-ostsee-BDYQCAQNINVXNBHVMFZJ4NHDVM.html
Oh, so yesterday’s RMotD was just early to make sure he caught this!

You can easily double check on Bricklink and Rebrickable and here on Brickset, but yeah I am pretty sure the magnets themselves are identical, but they are attached to the rest of the set in different magnet holder thingies.
M-Tron and various other themes had a 2x2 plate with magnet on top for some of its sets. That would be attached to the top of a build like a crate and be picked up by a magnet on the end of a crane or whatever.
For trains the magnet was in a bracket with a Technic 1/4 pin that clipped vertically into a piece that had the train buffers on it, to allow it to articulate as the carriages turned a corner.
Ooh, it is a 2-in-1 where you build either the sleeper carriage, or a smaller passenger carriage.

Same thing actually ;-)
DB only used that on first class IC carriages though, which were also used on TEE service. Second class had blue instead of red.
A classic! I like how the small slit windows get actuall glass in them here. It's been a while since I've last seen that.

No, I meant the fact that the signage is white. Hadn't realised that these were prints though. I have 182 and that has plain white stickers that are applied to the red and blue coaches. Now-a-days stickers colour match the bricks that they are intended to be applied to, but sometimes they're not quite a perfect match, unless they have clear backing.
Interesting with no SNOT bricks how they built the bunk bed supports attached to the reverse of the car headlamp brick. These were then repurposed in the B build as seats for the diner carriage. I also didn't realize the bricks with holes for metal train wheel axles were still around in 1984.
I got 7740 for Christmas 1981; probably due to the memories it holds for me I still think these are the best era for trains, even though later sets have so much more realism these early 80s 12v trains were a massive step up in realism from what we were used to. I spent literally hours pouring over the catalogues, looking for all of the accessories (including this set) which I couldn't afford; I particularly longed after the platform lights, the signal and electric points - I did end up with the level crossing and manual points before everything was eventually packed away in early 1984 ready for my dark ages...zzzzz

Back in the day they would mount metal or later plastic destination signs (https://alte-zuglaufschilder.de/geschichte/) on trains, and those most commonly were white. I guess that's what Lego was going for here.
Gonna try and build this later this week! :D
TRAAAAAIN!
The 1980s and '90's were the best Lego train years, with special mention to the Santa Fe and it's cars of the early 2000's. After 2005, it just hasn't been the same... TLG only throw us an occasional bone, but with no real theme to support it.
I yearn for this simplicity in lego sets again
Wow this is expensive on BrickLink! Are people really paying that sort of money for a few exclusive tile prints?

Yes, it probably was, certainly in the 7740 Train Set it came in, as the BR coaches in that livery would have been pulled by a steam train!
It also works well in 7710 NS blue/yellow.

With a steam locomotive....the last of which was retired 15 years before that color scheme was introduced...

This is done on a case-by-case basis. Old Republic and Imperial logos are always just cut at the edge of the logo, so they are never color-matched to the background (even if the background is white or black). Text that would be printed on a colored background, on the other hand, is impossible to apply as _just_ the text unless it’s printed on clear, but they tend to avoid using clear stock unless they need to apply stickers to transparent parts. So, stickers like this will get color-matched backgrounds. If, as @WizardOfOss describes, the white background would be part of the signage, it’s not much different than the SW logos I mentioned, and the sticker would likely be cut to the edge of the sign with no color-matching (again, even if it’s applied to black or white parts).

I guess you can mix anything with anything and call it a Heritage Railway!
When was the last time LEGO stopped making individually boxed train cars? In recent times everything is in one big set.

If I'm ever gonna gonna make a layout for my Trix Express/TTR collection again, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. After, all, how else am I gonna explain Bavarian trains from the early 1900s running together with late 20th century stuff, and even some Britsh and American trains?

If they think it's worth it, why not? People are paying crazy amounts of money for new sets as well.
Having said that, you can get stickers for cheap in lieu of printed tiles from the Brick Sticker Shop

You can get them from BrickLink, they're not that expensive. You can even use the modern tracks or the ones 3rd party as long as you're just using curves and straights without switches and X cross (the modern switches/X Cross will not work with the metal inner rail).
Guy running at the car: Did I miss the train!
Woman in the car: No...the TRAIN missed THE TRAIN...:D

Cool!
I'm considering to not visit Japan twice this year, but instead spend one vacation within Europe for once. Maybe should add heritage railways in the UK to the list of options....
Funny, BrickNerd just re-ran an old article about remixing 12v trains on January 11th, which you can find here: https://bricknerd.com/home/remixing-12v-trains-modernizing-classic-lego-trains-1-29-24
