Random set of the day: Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 75087 Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter, released during 2015. It's one of 68 Star Wars sets produced that year. It contains 370 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$39.99/£39.99.
It's owned by 5,446 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $215.20, or eBay.

Honestly one of the worst Lego Star Wars ships. Very unascetically pleasing.
The best Star Wars show, Lego should've made more sets from it. Really wish I picked this up when it came out.

You're not the only one who regrets not adding it to their collection. And yeah, more sets from the first Clone Wars series would have been awesome. I would particularly liked to have seen Asajj Ventress' fighter.
I was so thrilled to see this made back in 2014. The 2003 Clone Wars Microseries rocks and if you haven't seen it, it's worth it. The Azure Angel is so in line with Anakin's sensibilities, he just couldn't not modify a standard Jedi Starfighter to do more, and it's a shame it never carried over into the 2008 show.
The only major disappointing thing about this set is that because it comes with Asajj Ventress, we never got her Fan-Blade. I still want to see LEGO tackle that ship with how the wing is literally a fan. Would an entirely new piece need to be made? Could it actually fold up? I'm not saying we'll never get it, but after 20 years, it's looking less likely despite some designers being big Clone Wars fans, although I also wasn't expecting the Azure Angel after 10 years either. We did get Ventress back in Bad Batch last year, so maybe whatever stories she's featured in could see a return of the ship. It was in the 3D Clone Wars show for a brief moment, maybe we'll see another go at it and LEGO try to make one, too.
I have that one!
But I never understood why the astromech in this set isn't R2D2, but some other Droid that isn't even named in any of the set listings (R4P17 if memory serves)

General Grievous in that show was a beast!
I wonder how this set came to be, given that the original Clone Wars show was de-canonized by 2015 and the later Clone Wars still being somewhat actual in that year...
I guess Lego didnt want to travel too far away from the movies when the original aired (given their financial situation and the way the first years of Lego Star Wars went). so that's why there were no sets back then. But how did it happen they revisited it years later and then only make a single set?
But maybe this leaves open the possibility for some more sets in the future. The show may be non-canon, but it sure had some interesting stuff.

The set is under the 'legends' sub-theme.

Well, the astromech-and the entire Starfighter for that matter-blow up in one of the episodes.
@Shadowcloner it would have been nice. A Durge figure would have been sweet. And Asajj’s fanblade Starfighter would have made a nice companion to this.

I just hope we get a Voolvif Monn minifigure. Then I'll be happy.
I would love to see the Gunship from that series!

You are out of your mind. This is one of the best Delta-7 modifications ever. It’s hotrod and punk all rolled into one.

I like cleaner, more uniformed ships better.
This was the first set that I bought on the aftermarket, after exiting my dark ages. No regrets! Ps. My family just finished rewatching Ep. VI, followed by a brief digestif from the beginning of Ep. II for the young Anakin of it all. And we built 75396 while watching (however overpriced it is). It was a good Monday!
I love that Jedi Bob's starfighter evokes the Azure Angel.

I think it could be done with two flexible plastic pieces like versions of Destiny's Bounty have had.

Don't believe me if you like, but when I was on the Inside Tour in May 2016, one member of the Star Wars team at the time told me that while only Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter was produced, there were (are still?) "sketeches" made of another Clone Wars set featuring Durge on the speeder bike with (presumably) the lancer IG droids. Now, I don't know if by "sketches" he meant just paper drawings or actual model prototypes (which are also often called "sketches"), but for me, it was particularly exciting to know that the Tartakovsky Clone Wars series had not been forgotten by anyone at The LEGO Group.
Back to this set specifically, I consider it my favorite set of 2015 and in the running for one of the best Star Wars sets of the 2010s. In a time where I was living in an apartment and not often there due to work, I still built this set and left it displayed on my dresser. It is just too cool, and I have a great fondness for the Cartoon Network shorts that ran from November 2003 to May 2005. Anakin's custom Jedi Starfighter (the Azure Angel) featured heavily in the first batch of episodes as Anakin (newly minted Commander in the Grand Army of the Republic) led the Republic space attack over the planet Muunilist. The battle ended in a Republic victory, but Anakin was drawn away at the end by the arrival of Asajj Ventress in her Fanblade Starfighter (still waiting on that one, LEGO!).
In April 2004, the second batch of episodes revealed Anakin pursued Asajj in her starfighter to Yavin 4, where she destroyed the clone trooper battalion Obi-Wan sent to assist Anakin. Sadly, the Azure Angel was destroyed as well, and after a fierce duel, Anakin emerged victorious and returned to Muunilist in the Fanblade.
The episodes were filled with so much action, it is very, very easy to finish building this set and start swooshing around, firing blasters and missiles at Banking Clan and Trade Federation fighters. Additionally, with both Anakin and Asajj minifigures, you can even replay their duel across Yavin 4. I made a small MOC from PAB wall parts sourced from my local LEGO stores to represent the jungle environments and crumbling Massassi temples.
The ONE fault for this set that even the good people at LEGO couldn't give me a straight answer on was why they didn't give the Anakin minifigure a golden right hand to represent the mechanical one he gained at the end of Attack of the Clones. I figured if Luke Skywalker minifigures could have one black (gloved) hand and one flesh-colored hand, certainly they could've done the same for Anakin during his Clone Wars days. But no, apparently. A glaring error, but nothing a sacrificed C-3PO figure can't fix.
I highly recommend this set. Even as a work-weary adult, I got so much child-like joy and fun from this set. And in this day and age of Star Wars churning through endless "content", how often are we going to see Star Wars sets from things not currently being advertised or produced?
I still can't believe what they gave in 2023 for the "20th Anniversary" Clones Wars. More like the 15th Anniversary....
Still one of my Very Light Stone Grey whales. 2003 Clone Wars was my life
Although 75388 Jedi Bob's Starfighter has a better shape, I'ld prefer big slope and the nose build of this one.
I have this set thanks to buying its parts at Bricklink and using some I already owned. I wanted it a lot, but it for some unknown reason it was never sold in Brazil so I never had the chance of buying it back in 2015. I did this with various of my SW sets.
I believe this set was a Walmart exclusive, at least here in the U.S.A.

I feel the same. Can't believe I passed on this upon release. Regretted it ever since.
CW Ventress looks better than TCW Ventress.
This ship and the accompanying show are not my cup of tea, but it was amazing that this one was released like it was. It feels like it came out more recently than it did. I guess nowadays risks like a standalone like this would be too much for poor Lego's wallet to bear.
Oh, AotC era Anakin is nice to see too. (Yes, I know this one has the hand from after the film). That version is featured way too infrequently.
I honestly don’t remember this ship appearing but given all the other wild imagery happening in that miniseries, can you blame me?
First 2015 rsotd I believe. Always wanted this one as a kid, having watched the 2D Clone wars quite regularly back then. Never got it though.

I am quite sure that any set based on this series would sell very well these days. It would probably be more successful now than when the series ran in 2003, or during the time of the prequel films.
Best Ventress set and the only one from the CW cartoons. That's why I need it!

No, 41087 was the first 2015 RSotD.

The set would have been in development long before the series was put in legends. It was probably too late to stop it being released by that point. Plus Lego have produced many non canon sets over the years, Freemaker sets comes to mind.
I love this set, One of my favourite sets that is always on display along with a moc of the Massassi ruins for the dual.
Asajj and Anakin are great figures to boot too.
The 2k3 CW series is an incredible series with a litany of fantastic set pieces

According to the team behind the show, Freemaker is "canon adjacent," meaning that the events of the show are essentially a non-canon retelling of events and characters that very well could be canon. The team worked really closely with Lucasfilm to make sure that none of the events of the show contradicted anything in any of the upcoming films.
Actually, most of the show's main characters were made canon thanks to the 2018 reference book Droidography. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Droidography
Very interesting.

I don’t remember if it was CW or TCW, but I still want Mace’s second starfighter.

because R2 is with Padmé at that point. the red droid in this set is not R4-P17 (Obi-Wan's droid in ROTS) but is actually built into the starfighter and gets blown up alongside it

This set would have been designed during a very strange time. Disney had just announced that the Expanded Universe would become Legends and a new canon would be established. The only new bits of media to draw from were Force Awakens (which were all in the September 2015 wave to coincide with the movie) and Rebels. The January and summer waves in 2015 both consisted of Rebels, this set, and various “safe” sets based on the prequels and the original trilogy.
So I’d guess it may have been a case of “limitations breed creativity”.
If there's one set - ONE. SET. - that I regret missing due to my dark age...
I've loved the original Clone Wars cartoon ever since the last five episodes of the show were available for free to watch on starwars.com in the leadup to Revenge of the Sith, I bought both DVD volumes of the show as soon as they became available, and if I'd known that Lego had made a set based on it I'm sure I would have been all over this, dark age or no. I just did not even find out about it until several years later, when I was browsing the Brickset database and it gave me a very "Wait, what?" moment when I saw that they'd actually acknowledged the show, albeit several years after it had aired.
Of course, by then the set was long-gone from shelves. So, it is what it is. But still...
Would be nice to see that show get more acknowledgement. I still have especial fondness for those last five episodes (the Volume 2 DVD), being longer and a bit more plot-heavy than those of Volume 1, as well as leading directly into Revenge of the Sith, so some scenes from those would be my top choices to see acknowledged if Lego ever does revisit the series. Mace's starfighter vs. Vulture Droid (complete with feature enabling him to ride the droid as in the show!); Duel Aboard the Hovertain set of Shaak Ti, Foul Moudama and Rorron Corrobb vs. show-style Grievous; Anakin in the Techno Union lab on Nelvaan...
...I'm aware it'll never happen. But I can still dream xD

R4-P17 was Obi-Wan's astromech in AotC, who gets decapitated by Buzz Droids at the beginning of RotS (my favourite astro droid too, WHY? ;_;) This droid indeed looks very similar to her, and is also only ever referred to onscreen as R4; but has a red colour is brighter than that of Obi's R4 and, according to Wookieepedia, is named R4-P22.
I think there's two reasons in show lore for this to be a different droid from R2-D2. First is that, much like R4-P17 in AotC, I *believe* - though am not 100% certain - that R4-P22 was built into the starfighter rather than being an independent droid in their own right, making it far less easy to switch out for R2. I believe later material changed this, but at the time all AotC-style Jedi Starfighters had their astro droids built in, and it was only the RotS starfighter design that changed that.
Second is that at this point, R2-D2 was still in service to Padmé; in the show, it's only after Anakin is knighted that she gives R2 to him as a congratulation gift, which is shown briefly in the final scene of episode 21.
This set brought me out of my dark age. "They made a 2D Clone Wars set? What??" Instant purchase.

How... that is prob the best delta 7 set out of all of them, not just by looks but the build design itself is probably one of most accurate delta 7s lego has made
This set came out about five years too early, much like Bionicle G2. Having 2015 be the Early 2000s nostalgia year at Lego didn't work because the early 2000s kids didn't have disposable income yet, and only the older bunch of them had jobs at all. I'll forever grieve that I never got this set because I have so much childhood attachment to this ship and this show, and now it's ridiculously inflated on the second hand market. I'll reiterate again that 75354 should have been a Muunilinst 10 gunship no matter how well the Coruscant Guard gunship pairs with the ARC-170 and other 2025 Republic ships.
As for the set itself, though... it's honestly a bit of a miss color-wise and shaping-wise. I grew up with the original Hasbro action-figure scale version of this ship (as well as the original Obi-Wan Delta-7) so I'm really a stickler for how these ships are supposed to look, but Lego's incarnations have been quite disappointing. It was a valiant attempt to make the ship using the current Delta-7 build format, but it's another prime example of the current Delta-7 build being really ugly. The cockpit is too high, a hallmark of all of these, the hull doesn't wrap properly around the intakes, the Anakin minifig is bad, the whole thing should have been in dark blue, and the stripes don't connect like they should.
I designed a midi-scale MOC of this thing two years back that's a bit more accurate, but making the stripes out of bricks at a small scale required some odd part usage and depth, though some more recent parts should allow for better results if they get in the right colors.
Shocked that LEGO made a Legends set over two years after the Disney buyout
I think Lego released this at the time they did because it was something they were planning on for a long time but never really got to it, until everything was decanonized. Before the slew of new Disney-canon material would come out in late 2015, Lego pushed for this to be released because they were not sure they ever could after.
The only thing I don't like about this set is an issue that plagues every Delta-7 set released since this one: they all have the narrow shape of the Delta-7B from TCW.

Are you sure about this? As far as I remember, the first Clone Wars contradicts the second Clone Wars by several accounts. And Lucas was more or less always in favor of the second Clone Wars series (although he sometimes could be interpreted as "both are non-canon, I don't care").
From Plo Koon's Delta-7 in Episode III to Jedi Bob's Starfighter, this one ship has had a LOOOONG legacy.
I also like to believe that in-universe, Anakin's modifications inspired the Delta-7B, which carries a complete astromech on the centreline, rather than the integrated, head-only droid on the Delta-7. (And yes, unlike the set, the Azure Angel in the show also just has the head rather than the full droid, but hey, the idea is there.)
A set I'm very glad to have, and which I STILL can't quite believe they made.
