Plus, it had those sliding ladders. I always loved those things.

A newbie, have we?
Dude. You've go the bungee cable tied to the wrong end of the ladder. This isn't going to end well for you.

yaa I am, please elaborate lol
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
The mid 90s were peak Lego.

You are affected by nostalgia too much. Lego is peaking right now. In terms of quality, design, everything.
This was one of the obstacles on the LEGO Island racecourse, right? In the caves?
(Anyone else know what I'm talking about?)
Evolution is real:
6690 > 6358 > 6340 > 60112 > 60216 > 60282
A beautiful set. I haven't built the one I acquired via eBay yet, but as a child of the 90s, this was always the quintessential fire truck to me. It will pair perfectly with the Flame Fighters fire station that came out the same year. I've actually built that one for my town.
This is one of the first sets I remember building, in my grandma’s living room.
Back half of your truck looks a little barren there fellas, you been doing some cheeky deconstructing?
I like its predecessor 6358-1 better. This seems a bit juniorized in comparison - but it might just be something with the wheels

But after 6340 Lego designers started putting the ladder mount at the wrong end of the semi-trailer.
1994 was PEAK 90s Lego!
Got me hooked!

It depends on the truck, at least here in the US. Most tiller trucks do have the ladder mounted at the front of the trailer, but some have them mounted at back, next to the tillerman's station. Most non-tiller trucks have rear-mounted ladders/booms.
This mustache is peak fireman design.

I’ve never seen one that involves a trailer. I’ve only ever seen unibody designs, and I know some urban rigs use a rear-mounted secondary steering system to help them navigate tight turns better.

Me neither. I think the semi-trailer mounts are unique to the USA.
This era of firefighter sets was great, this was the first real step up in accuracy toward real life firefighting.
A great set. And that's saying something, considering the firefighting sets are a dime a dozen.
Great fire set!

Wait, do ladders today not slide anymore?
Granted, I don't really buy fire trucks new (I've got a couple from the turn of 2000s to the 2010s that I bulk last couple years), but surely--surely!--they still have those.
(The last fire LEGO fire truck I got new was Christmas 1998 and we do not speak of the blasphemy that is 6407.)
Anyway, I'm Team Nostalgia, narrowly construed. Peak LEGO happened in 1994 because I was 7.
