Oof. I had a hard time tracking this one down. As far as I could tell, in the US, it was only available at LEGOLAND stores, and our LDC wouldn't open for a few more years. I made it to Chicago that year, and they were sold out. Eventually, I caved and bought two from a seller in Oregon (in European terms, that's like six countries away).

MSRP: $4
BrickLink Price: $25.70

If this isn't proof that there's demand for LotR to come back as a full-fledged theme, I don't know what is.

And don't forget the two (soon three) recent LotR sets which have been extremely popular and sold very well.

Yes! Can't wait to see Bag-End; definitely my most anticipated set of the year, as I expect most LotR sets to be for the next few years.

Aghh the pain of polybags availability
The only LOTR polybag I ever found was 30215 :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have a few LOTR polybags but not this one and the aforementioned 30215.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I can't remember if I bought 4 or 8 of these guys. My only regret is that I didn't buy more.

If only this was actually reasonably obtainable...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This really was only distributed in Legoland Discovery Centers and Five Below in the US? For the objectively best and most desired army-builder polybag? Shocking tbh.

I wouldn't call ot a news paper,
It was the Sun.
More useful as toilet paper than telling the news.

Interesting,
As it was Legolas and the Lake Town guard I could never (and still can't) find.
Only things (outside of the Comic Con bits) that I am missing from LEGO Middle Earth.

By in United States,

If I remember correctly, this set's unavailability was what drove me to make my first Bricklink purchase.

I think I paid about $6 per bag, and bought about 10. I thought it was a significant splurge, but in hindsight seems very reasonable.

Toys R Us stores each got at least single case. I got 4 and hoped to get more later, but they never showed up again after that first assortment.

Ah the glory days of LEGO collecting. Picking up a bunch of these for a few quid then immediately dumping the newspaper in the (recycling of course) bin as you walked out of the newsagent. Sometimes I used to even put the papers back on the shelves ater purchase... not sure what that did to their sales records...

Ah. Frodo I had no problem finding, but buy even a few LotR sets and you’ve got at least one Frodo, and nobody needs an army of them. This must have sold out in record time, being the cheapest way to build an orc army.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This was free with the daily mail back in the day. Managed to pick up 11 of them to build an army!

I remember it being the Sun or Mail. grotty newspapers at best. My understanding is that the 'free Lego' promos that they would often run was a very expensive way for them to try and get new readers to regularly purchase the paper. It felt great getting numerous polybags for very little money whilst knowing you were damaging the papers finances....shame the promos came to an end.

By in Sweden,

Be careful if you own any of the old LOTR sets, several of my orc-torsos (one from this very set) have broken to pieces, dark red and brown pieces from this era are very fragile.

I have been quite lucky with that so far,
Other than a few parts of my Ent I haven't had any issues with brown/ dark red, despite having a lot from those years.
Hopefully that luck continues.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I remember this being a promotional item with a UK newspaper.

Had classes in the morning, so I ended up getting out to the shops around 11am to try and get one.

Nope. Sold out everywhere. Spoke to some staff, they had people buying 10 at a time. Sigh...

Lego replaced all my Ent parts last year as they were all shattering. I'd gotten Orthanc on its first release weekend.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Ah, I own two of this set if memory serves right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember this one being easier to get than the later Lake Town Guard polybag. Uruk I found at a Five Below, and there were several of those in the nearby area, but the Guard was only at Toys R Us as far as I could tell, of which there was only one which wasn't close to home.

As for army builder sets, Lego could offer a multiple 3-figure blister packs (or boxed battle packs) with small builds that I think fans would love to see (like the Star Wars 40557, or 75320 ). Many possibilities, too: orcs, Rohan soldiers, Minas Tirith soldiers, Hobbiton dwellers, Elves... and maybe add an extra head or like D&D to customize a few.

I think those would be well received by everyone

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't have many LotR sets, but I have this one - and it's been sat on my shelf fighting Elrond, which was included in the excellent LEGO LotR video game almost ever since!

In the US, I don’t recall ever seeing Legolas at retail. Fortunately, that one was a pack-in for the theatrical release of Hobbit 2 at Target, so if you knew to watch out for it they weren’t hard to find (again, limited army-building potential). The Lake-Town Guard I remember finding at TRU, so I bought a few. I didn’t really pay attention to long-term availability, but I suspect there was less demand to those than for this guy.

Which is why I bought fewer of the Laketown Guard, and currently regret it very keenly.

Ha! This made me smile.

I feel the same way here when dodgy religo-fascist fast food establishments (Chic-fil-a and In-and-out Burger) give free food coupons at basketball games.

Yeah, back in the day Frodo was right up there with Luke Skywalker, Emmet, Batman, Spider-Man, Owen Grady, and any other named character that AFOL's own 80 bazillion copies of.

yeah if the parts are still made LEGO will replace them no matter how long you had the set due to it being brittle.

No you're not. I've been seeing a lot of people predicting that it'll be a remake of 9469 , which would be neat, but we'll have to wait and see if that's the case.

Bag End / The Shire is my favorite place in all of LotR, so it’ll be an easy, take the day off and wait in line at the closest LEGO store, day one purchase for me!
