Random set of the day: Troll Warship
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 7048 Troll Warship, released during 2008. It's one of 14 Castle sets produced that year. It contains 493 pieces and 9 minifigs, and its retail price was US$79.99/£48.95.
It's owned by 3,298 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $400.30, or eBay.

We do a bit of trolling...
Never, have I ever, see or heard of this set. I think it looks pretty cool! This came out the same year a Castle advent calendar was released.

They have a cave troll.

I would love some modern Castle advent calendars.
"TROLL IN THE OCEAN! TROLL IN THE OCEAN!
Thought you ought to know."
Damn, that dragon looks awesome, with that armour especially.
Trolls make terrible gods. Why would anyone worship trolls?

It was produced for nearly _two_years_. And I don't see any availability listed, so I'm guess it was not a retailer exclusive. Of that entire line, 7041 is the one I wanted most, but I think all I got from that year was 5614, 5618 (whose head I just swiped to make an Orc Barbarian for a D&D scene I'm planning to unveil next weekend), and 852272.
yes yes
I too would fight a boat using a dragon- in fact I did it last wednesday

Castle advent would be fantastic.
I got this set a few years ago. I had to replace some of the brittle brown long tiles, and iron a wrinkled sail. Otherwise, it was in pristine condition.
It's a great set. The sails are fierce. The figures are cool. The ballista is dangerously functional and the dwarf in the hanging net is downright sadistic. A scary set from a different time.
With ship this cool, they didn't need any boats in the set. They just missed out on a cool headpiece on that majestic front hull.
The ship would move faster if the big troll operated the oars.

START THE NEW RESCUE DRAGON!
This set rules and that’s really all that needs to be said
My favorite castle series since 6075-2 / 375-2.
See? LEGO has made military vehicles in the past!

Stretching that a bit, sword and sorcery is different, not real life.

7041 was an exclusive
7048 was just normally available, lego even had a backstory on capturing and training the dragon
@TransNeonOrangeSpaceman this could be explained as a galley with slaves

Unfortunately, the armour is part of the dragon mould, not a separate part. What a wasted opportunity...
When this set was released I rejected it, not one of my favourites of its series and ships are very cumbersome on shelves, so I usually ignore that. Many years later, I stumbled upon it and now it occupies a lot of space on my shelf.
It's a shame about the inflated Castle aftermarket because I had next to no money in 2008 for lego and Fantasy Castle were some awesome sets!
At least I got a Troll catapult last Christmas, which I sourced the individual parts for from store purchases. So that's nice.
Also known as the 4chan flagship.
Castle from 2007/2009 were my absolute favorite fun Lego. Simply the best toys and great building sets. I'd love a revival of knights/skeletons/trolls/dwarves soon.

Maybe he's too fat to row.
Just husky.

BUILD THE DRAGON
AND OFF TO THE RESCUE
A cool looking set with many interesting features and quite an unusual choice for a Castle set. It pairs up quite well with their allies' Ghost Ship from 2007.
Also a very nice selection of figures - the exclusive armored dragon, the green giant troll and Urkt, the troll captain, as well as a decent amount of troll warriors.
It could have used a few more printed troll shields though, all present are used as decoration on the ship's sides. A few loose ones for the figures would have been nice. Also the actual space on the main deck looks a bit empty.
One warning though - this set is cursed with brittle bricks. The Dark Brown and Dark Red parts are especially in danger. Take extreme caution when trying to disassemble this.
Such a trollish ship! They really nailed the feel on the boat, from the overall design to the little details like the slave driver and the dwarf dangling in the net. It felt a little sparsely appointed on the interior, but boy was it big! This wasn't the apex of Castle build quality, but I think it might have been the apex of Castle play value.
My complaint was the dragon. There is a dividing line where Lego animals are best as molded elements, and best as brick-built. The bigfig orc is on the correct side of the line, but the dragon isn't. At the time, I felt the Bionicle-inspired beasts from the Vikings line were so much better than this dragon. Lego must have agreed, because big brick-built dragons became de rigueur in Ninjago.

I do believe this one ( 7048 ) was available worldwide, but 7029 was not available in NA. They make a great pair together attacking the knights, and the knights at least have the armored dragon.
A rare case of a good-guy dragon in Lego Castle.

Until this very comment of this very thread, I had forgotten the Ghost Ship existed and had completed merged it into my memories of the main set under discussion.
EDIT: the moral of the story is that I am disconcertingly old.

Brickset has the NA number listed, so clearly 7029 was. I think it may have also been a retailer exclusive, though. Depending on who held that exclusive, stock may have been exceedingly rare (I bought the sole copy of 9465 I ever saw at retail). Target has been particularly bad about underordering highly desirable exclusives, and then sometimes clearancing them as soon as they show up. And LEGO Stores tend to get short stock on shared exclusives, too. If you didn’t show up at the right store on the right day (or you were a little later than someone else), LEGO.com may have been your only reasonable shot at grabbing some of these sets.
love this set so much. it just has so much character and charm. feels like it tells such a good story right on the box
This set is so AWESOME!
Everything about this set is so humorous, charming and totally fantastic!
Not just the troll ship, and 8 minifigs, but that big fig troll, and best of all that dragon!
Glad I got it back in the day, had it on display for years.
I should probably rebuild it again, and put it on display in some medieval fantasy diorama.
To this day that castle fantasy theme is still one of the best castle themes TLG ever made IMO.
