Look at this silly goober roaming around the sands of Bara Magna.

By in New Zealand,

I'm getting General Grievous vibes from this.

Beware the stinger tail!

Bionicle used to resale at bargain basement prices. Big boxes of used stuff are still pretty cheap.

Yet, I've been shocked lately at some auctions for sealed sets selling at very high prices.

Made famous for his stinger tail!

At first I thought this was a Hero Factory villain. It is just a year off, though.

The Vorox were once one of the many sapient races that lived on the world of Spherus Magna. A close relative of the Glatorian and Skrall species, they were most notable for their long stinger tails, a biomechanical modification made by the Great Beings. While most tribes of Glatorian and Agori settled in large cities near important resources, the Vorox were a nomadic people. Alongside the similarly scorpion like Zesk they made up the Sand Tribe, a collection of wanderers who traveled the Great Desert that spanned the planet's surface.

100,000 years ago The Shattering occurred. This event split the world of Spherus Magna into three smaller worlds, the largest being the Desert World of Bara Magna. The stress of the event, alongside the modifications made by the Great Being and rapid collapse of society, caused the Sand Tribe to regress. Over the next few thousands of years disease and starvation destroyed their minds turning both Vorox and Zesk into a more animistic state. They became afraid of fire and thunder and lost the ability to speak, their now rusted and chipped swords and spears the only remnant of their old culture.

These more bestial forms quickly became outcast from what little society remained. Most tribes saw them as threats to avoid or fight on the roads between villages, but others were more sinister. Both the (similarly nomadic) Bone Hunters and (Rock Tribe) Skrall would capture Vorox, using them as slaves and beasts of combat, with killing them in arena combat being a popular sport.

Some time ago the Glatorian Malum was exiled from his village for attempting to kill someone in the arena after they had surrendered. While in exile he defeated the alpha of a Vorox pack and took over as their leader. He soon became a praised figure among them, uniting most the disparate scorpion packs as a grand Sand Tribe once more.

When the Bone Hunters and Skrall began gearing up for war on the other tribes, Malum was their biggest threat in the wastes, enraged by how they enslaved his new people. Initially he did not want to take formal sides in the war, but was eventually convinced to help his old home and defend the Fire Tribe with the help of the Vorox.

When Mata Nui's soul was cast from his great body, The Mask of Life created a new (much smaller) form for him on Bara Magna. Shortly after his rebirth he was attacked by a Vorox. Despite his lack of skill he managed to knock off the beast's stinger, and used the Mask of Life's mutation power to transform it into an elegant sword.

When Metus' betrayal of the other Tribes was discovered, and the other Tribes finally banded together against the Skrall, Metus tried to sic their captive Vorox on the united army. But the scorpions instead turned on their slavers, destroying Metus' escape vehicle and letting Mata Nui capture and punish him. Mata Nui used the Mask of Life to turn Metus into a snake, so his treachery would be known to all.*

After Spherus Maga was reformed, a small band of Toa and Glatorian headed to the jungles of Bota Manga to seek out the Great Beings. One vile Great Being, Velika (who's got a whole thing going on, he was in the GSR, its complicated), had other plans. He reached Bota Magna first and contacted the Vorox who had survived on that moon.

You see, the Vorox of Bota Magna had not mentally regressed like their desert cousins. Among them was Kabrua, a pack leader and an old secret agent loyal to Velika. Velika informed Kabrua of how Vorox were enslaved and hunted for sport on Bara Magna, which enraged him. Velika provided these intelligent Vorox with a device that could shut off Toa's elemental power, making them very vulnerable.

When the Toa team seeking the Great Beings reached the jungle, Kabrua captured them. He used his device to disable their powers, stole all their weapons, and stranded them in the middle of the jungle with a brief head start. If the Glatorian were to hunt Vorox for sport, the Vorox would return the favor.

Due to the cancellation of the Story Serials, how and if this Toa Team survived was left on a cliffhanger.

*Also this is only tangentially related, but I want a mention it 'cause its super weird. During that same fight there's a scene where Click wants to help the team. He sends out a call and summons a bunch of his Scarabax kin. They form a giant "monster" to trick the Skrall and scare most of the army off. Oddly, this monster takes the form of Malum. As far as I'm aware, there's no official explanation for this. Most likely it was just a case of "we aren't using this model for anything else in the film, just recycle it" but with how shaman-like Malum became after his outcast I'd like to think the guy was doing more for the animals than just the Vorox while out in the wastes.

Oh, hey, seems an appropriate time to mention something cool that happened. At Brickworld Indy, someone passed a box on to another member of my LUG to give to me. When I opened it, there was a McToran inside. It was Onepu, except instead of a Pakari, it was wearing a purple Hau. I vaguely remember commenting that I wished they'd made one, as there was a character in the Mata Nui Online Game that I couldn't produce without it.

i have 3.5 of this set

By in United Kingdom,

The Glatorian storyline was where I started dropping out of collecting Bionicle sets; Vorox here was one of the few I did grab since I figured the addition of a tail meant it wouldn’t be a complete clone build even if it was a minor difference

It definitely was an odd choice. That is an interesting, if depressing, theory about Malum. Perfectly willing to murder his own people, but at least he’s nice to desert bugs. Of course, maybe the Scarabax chose him because he was the scariest Glatorian they were regularly exposed to. I could easily have seen him hooking up with the Barraki or some other villainous faction after Spherus Magna reformed.

Either way, Malum at least got a nod in the movie, unlike my boy Gelu. Literally the only Glatorian or Glatorian Legends figure not to appear in the film even as a mass-produced grunt.

By in Netherlands,

My first Glatorian! He stayed the only one from the first six.
It's a cool figure, that tail is super poseable and the color scheme works great! There's even some (reddish) brown in there!

When I re-acquired mine and Zesk, it was during a summer in the middle of a multi-week heatwave. How appropriate.

Sealed Lego is expensive, the older the better. Because the supply of these ‘time capsules’ is so incredibly low, there is always a big surplus of AFOLs on the ‘demand’ side, regardless of what theme you pick.

By in Germany,

This was such a fabulous set. The render doesn't show but almost all tan parts had a marbled brown effect, giving Vorox a very unique look. I also love the mask and the unusual posture.
In general, 2009 was a super hot year for Bionicle in terms of set design with lots of great moulds and vibrant colors.

Only the four limb armor pieces had this marble effect, and you can see it on the render. All the other tan pieces were just tan.

Oh, I see it now. I think it looks pretty great for a bionicle set (wasn't into them much at all, but have a few). I do love Grievous though. It's like him+ a scorpion.

The only thing I'll remark on that I don't think anyone else has is that this is one of the handful of Inika build sets to have its torso backwards for some unknown reason. I get that the idea that he's supposed to be in a somewhat hunched bestial stance with emphasis on the tail, so the chest is moreso an underbelly, but it always felt confounding and arbitrary whenever they would do this. Heck, even 8986 later in the year *tried* to add an armor piece to smooth it out. At least it's not 8941 where there's a chestplate with defined pectorals and abs on the back...
