Realizing that LEGO forklifts are pretty wimpy, they never did a proper intermodal car, did they?

They've gone off the rails! These cars have a mind of their own! Head for the hills!

Ooh, I liked this one.

It's one of those carriages that you'd need multiple copies of, to really do justice to a proper long freight train. Even when it was available, it was hard to find.

I miss these big beautiful train sets.

Nice looking set, just a bit uhmm - strange release timing?

There wasn't much of the "My Own Train" Subtheme of Shop at Home left in 2005 except maybe for the BNSF Train (which I'm not sure had a large stock anyways).

Interesting they even based these type of wagons directly on real life ones.

I got two of these back when they were originally being sold, and I have always wished I got a third one. I currently have them on display behind 10133.

Those cargo boxes look nifty! Would be better if I live in a time to get these tho.

There was a time when LEGO Train Clubs would make up a bunch in the same format and swap them with other LTCs. Problem is, I don't think my club actually has any of the ones that we technically traded for. Also, the containers are ridiculously dinky. They should be able to fit a few cars inside, but these are only big enough to fit one coffin.

By in New Zealand,

I upgraded 7 sets of this to be wider, to take 2 16 x 6 shipping containers same size as on the LEGO Maersk train set.

Great looking cars, not quite so great looking containers...

Went perfectly with 10133 and 10020 from the last of the 9v era trains. Lego Direct to Consumer sets like these were catering specifically to the adult market.

Stack 'em up double, boys.

I remember seeing this in the 2005 catalog and at first thinking it was some sort of automatic train because the image is staged so well it looks like it's in motion on its own and with the blue box as some sort of control tower. Then it turned out to just be a very detailed freight car.
Idk, it just looks more special than that. It didn't help that it was placed in the same lineup as the BNSF and Santa Fe Super Chief as if it was a third front car option.
I had a lot of imagination back then...

By in United Kingdom,

It’s a very… factual set title isn’t it. The early 00s train stuff all reads a bit dry to me, perhaps because they knew these sets were for an older train enthusiast niche

It’s alright, looking at the way the steering wheel’s facing they’re perpetually driving backwards so they’ll never be able to chase us properly!

Obligatory "I miss the Lego Trains theme" comment!

Ironic.... I just finished digitally re-designing the diesel loco 10133 that went with this set. I'm gonna use black instead of dark green, like the real BNSF railroad has done since 2005. This RSOTD must be a sign from Huwbot... but what does it mean?

One of the few train sets of that time I didn’t pick up. I think it’s just because I don’t like intermodal stuff in general. It’s very boring. Very efficient for real life, mind you, but boring to look at.

Which are better in that they're big enough to contain stuff, rather than merely being the stuff, but they're still pretty dinky compared to real shipping containers.

@stefwaffles:
It would be weirder if they'd done something different. Even City sets include a fair number of purely descriptive names, especially for individual municipal vehicles. Full train, or 2+ vehicles, and it makes a bit more sense to come up with a more flavorful name.
