Random set of the day: Vacation Camper
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6590 Vacation Camper, released during 1988. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 116 pieces and 2 minifigs.
It's owned by 4,157 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $167.40, or eBay.

"We're all goin' on a summer holiday
No more workin' for a week or two
Fun and laughter on our summer holiday
No more worries for me or you"
its blue guy's rival, red guy
so basically this is TF2
anyway, a very charming little set :]
Parked the car in the way of all the drinks. Perhaps somebody already had a few when they did that.
Looks more like a carnival lemonade stand. Too small to serve anything more substantial.
@Worrissey: More interestingly; Red guy is with a Blue girl, they have a a Blue car, and a Red...'camper' (that looks more of a Food-Truck:)).
Fun fact, this set contains the only 2x2 Tile in Trans-Clear. There's only one in this set so better make it count.
I think the only other 2x2 Tile in a transparent colour was the X-Ray print from a CMF Surgeon.

My brother had this set when we were kids, and that tile bothered me. What use is a skylight when it's on top of the roof, rather than set into it? The car having more space than the usual Lego four-wide was nice, though.
I had this as a kid. I always thought it strange that one of them had to ride in the camper while the other drove.
Definetly one of my favorite town sets. Gifted to me by a friend just a couple of years ago.
I remember seeing this in an older LEGO catalog as a kid but I sadly never owned it. I always remember thinking the camper windows were the coolest thing.

I found a Trans Red one in a bulk purchase... then I realized it was a clone brand.
This is one of the sets I didn't have as a kid but bought recently via ebay.
Really charming set. Overall I bought about fifty of the smaller "LEGOLAND Stadt" (Town) sets that I missed out on as a kid. Back then I didn't even realize that there were so many cool ones like this. And as mentioned they often came with rare or even one-off pieces that are great to have.
This one would be alot easier to overtake.
Old Town Leisure sets always fascinated me. When I was a kid, Lego City was in its infancy, and it was all business and duty - police, firefighters, medics, coast guards, construction workers, etc. there were no sets where lego people would just chill and enjoy life. So whenever I saw the old sets I looked at them with reverence, thinking what could have been if I was born a few years earlier.
According to the discussion in todays RMotD, the red guy is clearly a bad guy due to his horizontal stripes
Great set! I have no idea why it took me 30 years to buy it.
Loved this set! Bought it shortly after release from the sadly-departed Jolly Giant in Edinburgh. Not going to say whether it was superior or inferior to the earlier 6694 - both full of Eighties charm.
So much trans clear. It's great for the style of the time!
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent all alone
Childhood memories!! Always love that stud-top feel to everything in Legoland Town! This takes me back to my first 'proper' Lego set of 1484 (not counting my 2644 or Fabuland set 3630 ) I'll go dig out some instructions online and build this this weekend!

As you said, which one was better was a matter of opinion - but this one is definitely bigger.
A lovely set!! I had it as a kid and I loved it.
It is true that, as some of you say, one minifigure drives while the other one is in the camper, but that was not important in the 80s...cars were only 4 stud wide and everything was allowed!!
I remember building this one as a kid and mirroring the trailer build somehow... Good times!
Best lego vehicle of my childhood
As silly as it is, I loved this set as a kid. I am not a camper, but something stood out about this set. Fun times. I think I even built different color versions for my cityscape.
Called Car with Camper in the UK catalogue, unsurprisingly, as 1988 British kids probably wouldn’t have known the word vacation. So for everyone who grumbles at Brickset for using British names for sets - well here they haven’t!

Not so fun fact: those tiles were probably acrylic, and thus the vast majority of them look like garbage by now. They have made a 2x2 tile in clear polycarbonate (and again, probably in MABS), but only for use on internal color palettes. Some of those have gotten into the wild, though.
"I think the only other 2x2 Tile in a transparent colour was the X-Ray print from a CMF Surgeon."
That appears to be correct, at least according to Rebrickable. Although, trans-clear 2x2 round tile apparently hit PAB sometime prior to 2021. And if you count it as a 2x2, the splat tile came in Trans-Bright-Green and Trans-Light-Blue.
One of my very first Lego sets when I was a kid, I still greatly appreciate it. As an hommage, some years ago, I designed a ‘citified’ version of it, which in turn has let me to do this with several other camping themed Town sets. I got this set when it came out. It was an awesome set and my first LEGO RV and Camper van type set.
V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N! In the summer sun!
Put away the books, we're outta school!
The weather's warm, but we'll play it cool!
We're on vacation, havin' lots of fun!
