Today's random set is 1185 Raft, released during 1999. It's one of 15 Castle sets produced that year. It contains 25 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$2.

It's owned by 823 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $24.00, or eBay.

Watch out for the rock.

A ninja is capable of many things, but nobody's making it out of those rapids without some kind of loss. That raft is a goner.

Sword, bow, and two spears? That's an army builder. Plus you can use the raft for wall building.

That's what I thought! I actually thought this was a Ninjago set for a split second.

And if you steer the raft skillfully, you can shish-kabob some salmon for lunch!

He had the choice of making the raft slightly bigger, or adding the fixed bow emplacement. He’s pretty sure he made the right choice

Man, I love me some Ninja sets. They just had the perfect blend of history, historical inaccuracy for the sake of coolness and castle-y goodness. And the fun thing is that it doesn't matter whether you have one or multiple ninja because of the conservation of ninjutsu. In other words, they're just as effective as a single overpowered ninja or as a small army of underpowered mooks.
The same goes for this model. Either you have a small army of these chasing you and 'rapidly' failing one by one but each getting a single hit in at most, or you have a single one that terminators his way to you using all those weapons.

This reminded me of 40566 Ray the Castaway. I replicated that set but forgot about raft. Now I'll go back to my spares to complete what I've started.

Murder Rafting!

Probably hasn't chosen the most stable item to hold onto. If your imagination stretches you could repurpose the crossbow stand as an outboard motor.

It's always a good day for classic!Ninja to feature as Random Set of the Day :D

Just noticed that this raft uses several of the same pieces as the main 'body' section of the Black Ninja's glider from 6045 and 6088: spears, clips and log bricks (albeit different colour). I wonder if maybe this guy managed to crash his glider and wreck its wings, and this raft was all that he could build out of the remaining pieces as a means to get back home...

I only now realize that the bagged version, 3017, is actually called Ninpo Water SPIDER rather than STRIDER.

In other words, "Jane, I mean Zane! Stop this crazy thing!" Second time recently I've busted out that reference.
